I've just started the ebooked version of this at work and so far I've just read up to the accident.
I love Cecelia, but she can be a bit of a tyrant and the telling off was justified I think - although I would't have called her a guest when she's a live-in babysitter!
I'm sorry, but I think Jessi is a brat at times and certainly justifies why she's treated like a baby. Then again, she IS eleven.

I don't want to come off as overly PC, but i'm reading at the moment and this line was just...weird:
[Mr Harris is taking his kids to the Kwanzaa festival meeting]
“Ohhhh!” Mr. Harris cleared his throat. “I’m sorry. When I said it was the wrong room, I meant, you know, I was expecting Jessi Ramsey, and—” “No sweat,” Abby said. “If I saw you in a synagogue, I might be a little confused, too.” They both burst out laughing.
Except...is there not any black jews? Iget what she means but still...

I thought aunt cecilia was such a douche in this book when she wouldn't listen to jessi about parking in the handicapped space and so forth
And yeah, I agree Jessi was too defensive about her african american background

I thought aunt cecilia was such a douche in this book when she wouldn't listen to jessi about parking in the handicapped space and so forth IMO, Aunt Cecilia was a douche in every book she was in; she just drove me crazy, especially when she would call Squirt by his full name, John Phillip. I don't know why that irked me but it did; maybe because everyone but her called him Squirt. Plus she was just so uptight and high and mighty .

I tried rereading this one the other day (thought it was appropriate as the story starts on the first day of December), but I just couldn't get into it this time. The writing is choppy and weird and Lerangis-y and gave me a headache. I skimmed over the rest and did really like this part:
Kristy makes me lol every time she's like that.
And maybe this is an inconsistency: Abby's described as having "pearly" skin. I know in other books she's mentioned as having an olive complexion. Or, like in Dirty Diapers, she's described as being tan, I think.

^ Yeah, I'm guessing that this is an inconsistency. I just can't picture Abby as pale, for some reason.

I liked the Happy Holidays, Jessi and how it had that holiday field to it. I couldn't believe that Aunt Cecelia could be so careless. That was not like her at all.

I can't believe Aunt Cecelia let her nieces unbuckle Squirt from his car seat. I know her brother told her to be nicer to Jessi and Becca but that doesn't mean that she should do something reckless. I thought everybody's reaction to the accident was realistic. First, they blamed themselves and then they blamed each other. I liked reading about Kwanzaa.

I thought this was the most boring Jessi book ever, which was sad because learning about Kwanza could (should) have been made more enjoyable. Instead it read like an endless lecture without any, IMO, personal connections to enliven it.
The first time I read this, I was surprised as well as taken aback that Squirt's accident, which could have killed him, was contained in a book entitled "Happy Holidays, Jessi--" just seemed (still does) wrong to me.
Aunt Cecelia was over the top annoying but then Jessi is still in her "I don't need a baby-sitter, I am one" mode so lol could be why. I do think it was horrible of Aunt C to have parked in the handicapped space. Too many people either do so (or don't have a permit or need to) or "borrow" a placard from a relative only to use it themselves. When I was a caregiver for my Grandma, I'd notice (was actually asked a few times by 'friends' if they could borrow the placard or why I refused to park in a handicapped space when my Grandma was not with me) this a lot more.
Anzuhana, I think instead of unbuckling Squirt and leaving him in the car seat alone, Jessi could have sat him on her lap. Safer alternative.

^ To me, that seems to be as dangerous as leaving Squirt alone in the car seat because then, there's a person behind him and what if something happened to Jessi? What will then happen to Squirt?

^Good point! Maybe Jessi could have simply sat beside Squirt (keeping him in the car seat) and played with him as a distraction. Sounded like they were close to home by then anyway.

^ Jessi or Becca probably should have sat beside Squirt while he was in the car seat and played with him, so he wouldn't be fussy.

There was a bit of debate earlier in this thread about whether Aunt Cecilia or Jessi`s dad was older. I thought it was mentioned in this book that Cecilia and John like to joke that Cecilia is younger, but rather, she`s older. I can see Cecilia`s character doing something like that.

squirt is one of my favorite characters in the whole series. my heart just breaks when he gets hurt. i love how it happened during kwanzaa though, when the whole family is supposed to be feeling close and instead they are fighting. in the end, kwanzaa sort of brought them all together and showed them what was important.

Is it just me, or does Squit look a little "downey" (Down Syndrome-y) on the cover? (Sorry to be so politically incorrect in the fact that I made something into a verb that shouldn't be!)
