I think there was a recent discussion elsewhere on the boards about how bad Hodges was at drawing non-adult characters. His children tended to look like little people.

^I recently said in some other thread that often times children looked like older people (with really bugged out features at times) trapped inside a kids' body.

Man oh man I am struggling through the last part of the BSC books. I wanted to like this one I really did! I love the holidays but man this was a Debbie Downer! It didn't feel like the holidays and I felt like I was reading an afterschool special that helped me understand Kwanzaa. I did like learning about it, but it just seemed so forced. I now want to learn why things are named for what and how it came about.
I really do not like Aunt Cecelia. I am pretty sure if I were Jessi's parents I would give her the boot! Does she have children? I would be interested to see how her kids turned out? I bet they are a bunch of lunatics that end up on intervention and hoarders. If she does have kids, it's interesting that they haven't asked her to help raise their children...oh wait I wouldn't either if I knew what type of parent she was.
Forgive me saying this...but I think Aunt Cecelia needs to have some sex. I mean god someone take one for the team and give the lady what she needs!

Aunt Cecelia does have kids. Actually, she only has one from what I remember. He lives in NYC and his name is Michael. He appears in the next Jessi book, Jessi's Big Break.

I always want to like this book but just am unable to. I completely admit to skipping most of it this time for "Abby's Twin." The Kwanzaa parts held zero interest for me which was sad because it could have been made interesting to learn about. Instead I felt it was blather. I also didn't feel like the Ramsey family came together as a family at all at the end. John should have apologized to Cecelia. In turn, there should have been a discussion on how to make their family work for everyone. What would have been "interesting" would be if Nannie and Cecelia ever met. I know, one is dibbly fresh and amazing in all ways while the other is a boring, bossie cronie. They are both in similar situations though.

I just read this one for the first time. I don't like it much. The Kwanzaa stuff bored me and the sudden convenient presence of all these other African-American families annoyed me. Although there was the explanation that they went to other schools so that might be why their paths hadn't crossed sooner.
I couldn't stand Aunt C in this book. Bossy and bitchy. I also hated that she parked in a handicapped space and then was annoyed about getting ticketed.
I also felt like there were too many black stereotypes casually tossed in at the beginning of the book - not the Kwanzaa stuff, but talking about food like pecan pie and collard greens, and Showtime at the Apollo, like these are things that all black people just love. I don't remember that kind of stuff ever being mentioned in earlier Jessi books.

It never fails to make me roll my eyes a little when Jessi says that Christmas makes her feel like a little kid again. Ummm, Jessi? YOU STILL ARE A LITTLE KID!!!!

^ Haha, I missed that one this time around. Really, the Kwanzaa festival was kind of boring. I skipped over it this time around. This is mentioned often, but do they have to have festivals on everything? I felt that Squirt being in the hospital was dragged out. Omar Harris is in Karen's class at school, and I'm surprised that Kristy never mentioned that when his name was brought up. I think this was around the same time The Kids in Ms. Colman's Class was being published. Sara Ford, another black kid in Karen's class, is also mentioned in this book.

^The entire story was dragged out! I felt poor Squirt being in the hospital for so long seemed more of a passing comment or something to add fuel to the fight between Aunt C and Jessi's Dad than anything else. I would hope if a very young toddler were truly in the hospital fighting to make it, (I believe in that book Squirt had regressed back to only being 14 months), that his parents would drop everything (including petty bickering) aside to be by his side! I was insulted by their behavior for fictional Squirt. A Ramsey holiday titled book that should have been called "John Ramsey 1 or 2 (we don't know if he or his "brother" were born first or hey maybe they were twins) vs. Cecelia. Remember from "BSC in the USA" Jessi supposedly had an Uncle John on her dad's side!

Remember from "BSC in the USA" Jessi supposedly had an Uncle John on her dad's side! Seriously? Wow, they should really bugger off with the John names (as we've mentioned). Not to sound harsh, but I think Squirt was in the hospital for way too long based off of what actually happened to him. I understand that they wanted to make sure there wasn't any additional problems, because he's in a developmental stage, but still. The blackouts seemed odd, like they were added in to make his situation more "serious". But it never mentioned that he was acting strangely, no broken bones, etc.

when it comes to kids his age, you really can't be too careful i guess. and even if they did overreact, i would understand why.

^See, that's the thing. At first it sounded like he had completely blacked out in the car. Later at the hospital didn't his vitals dip again? It went back and forth between being extremely serious to his possibly (probably) just being banged up.
Yep, Virgo, Jessi's Grandfather apparently loved the name John a little, too much. IIRC, Grandpa was named Arthur? I don't think Grandma was named. I always wonder just what John Perkins though of all the tributes. We know Ann's childhood bff, Beth, his wife, was sure passed onto many a Stoneybrookite in the name Elizabeth.
