I thought the part about Vanessa giving Mal a blank journal (when Mal asks for the greatest Christmas book ever written) was a little predictable, but that might be because I was thinking of how, when a bunch of actors from the Harry Potter movies each chose a book to donate for a charitable auction, Alan Rickman donated a blank journal in which he inscribed "my favourite book- a blank one". Which is funny, because now I'm picturing Alan Rickman getting his inspiration from a BSC book. Also, it's interesting how the Pikes do the same make-a-wish Secret Santa thing that was done in the Secret Santa book. Maybe the BSC got their idea from the Pikes?

I don't think I would've been very appreciative of the Secret Santa if I were a Pike kid.
I did feel for Stacey when she felt like she had to go to the BSC event instead of attending the concert with Robert... especially since Kristy plans BSC events for nearly every book.

I liked the blank journal part! I thought it was very thoughtful of Vanessa, and very in keeping with both her character and Mallory's as well. It's funny that we didn't see them bonding more over their shared love of writing.

^I wish we had and that Mal had at least begun writing her Christmas story--maybe Vanessa could have helped her. I always enjoyed the rare moments (talking about Sophie and when Mal left for Riverbend) that showed the two sisters talking and hanging out.

Totally! We don't really see them bonding or even interacting all that much throughout the series, though.

Maybe they are annoyed with each other cause they see reflections of themselves in each other....there's some pseudo-psych for the day

^ Plus, they were crammed down each other's throats all the time by having to share a room. When I look at it from that perspective, it makes more sense that we didn't see more bonding between them. I bet they ended up better friends when they were older.

^ I completely agree that Mal and Vanessa would be good friends when they're older. I thought about their relationship in high-school and remembered that Mal eventually goes to Riverbend. I think this would change the Mal/Vanessa dynamic somewhat.

Now that I think about it, with the exception of Kristy and Karen, it didn't seem like Mal (or any of the BSC) spent much time with her/their family (not baby-sitting). I have always wondered just how the girls (any of them) managed to get up say at 6:30 and sometimes baby-sit until 9:30 or later at night. Even "Junior Officer," Mal wouldn't have much of any down-time, especially consider all her "chores" at home. Maybe she really didn't spend much time with Vanessa other than overnight. I just always loved the scene before Mal leaves for Riverbend when Vanessa makes up a morning poem in exchange for a weather report. I thought that was so sweet and seemed to show a closeness between the sisters.

I would have liked to see more bonding between Vanessa and Mallory, but I can see where it might have been hard. I think as they got older they would get more close, that's what happened with my sister and I.
