^ Stacey's math stuff was always really confusing. Sometimes they made a big deal about pre-algebra and other times, they made it sound like she was in a much higher class. I don't remember if it ever did mention if she was in advanced math, though. Maybe SMS didn't even offer it. I know a lot of schools don't.

it is mentioned several times that stacey is in advanced math--i believe the equivalent of SHS's 9th grade standard math class.
in my school, only people like me who were terrible at math didn't do algebra in eighth grade. but maybe this is a relatively new thing.

I felt bad for Vanessa in this book. She never seemed that close to her other siblings, it must've been esp hard for her when Mallory left. I was bummed there weren't really many chapters involving the other BSCers, but then I realized any chapters involving them would've been strictly babysitting, so then I didn't miss them too much It would have been cool to see some meetings sans Mal though, to see how they reacted at first (I honestly can't imagine losing Mal to be that big of a deal to the club overall, though it might be strange for them to sit for the Pikes without her since she was usually one of those sitters)

^ I really felt for Vanessa for the same reasons. She always seemed kind of close to Mal and as one of the books pointed out, she is at a tough age anyway. I wish there would have been some meetings without Mal, too, because I can imagine it had to be weird not having her there whether or not she contributed to the club. I can imagine it would be hardest for Jessi since she became the only Jr. officer and think this is kind of mentioned in a later book but can't remember which one.

I haven't read anything other than the Fire at MAs after this book, but I am REALLY curious as to what went on with jessi afterwards...who did she hang out with at school??

Poor Jessi. She did kinda have all her eggs in one basket. Another thing about this book, I really didn't like how they didn't resolve the thing with Alexis. That was very unBSCish and I really wanted it to work out. I felt really bad for Alexis in this book, she was only a brat because she was so jealous and insecure.

I couldn't muster up any sympathy for Alexis after she read Mal's journal. Maybe because I am intensely private about such things myself, I totally understood how violated Mallory felt. Poor Mallory Vanessa understood her need for privacy, and Mallory understood Vanessa, and now Mal gets her first lesson in non-family roommates with someone who doesn't seem to grasp social cues or understand why what she's doing is wrong. Anyone else think Mallory's journal was probably awesomely overdramatic and filled with cringe-worthy bits that she could barely stand to re-read a few years later? I'd especially wonder how she'd feel about what she'd written about her sort-of-boyfriend Ben once she has a real boyfriend or two. I was in love with the idea of boarding school when I was little, and I really liked this book when I read it. It's one of the end-of-series ones that I actually even considered buying in the store despite being way too old. I also liked Mallory and I liked reading about her big family.

I totally agree with your post, scrounge. I'm also a private person and just reading about Mallory's reaction to Alexis reading her journal made me feel really bad for her. And then there was the care package. I had no sympathy for Alexis at all, really, even though she did seem pretty troubled.

I'd especially wonder how she'd feel about what she'd written about her sort-of-boyfriend Ben once she has a real boyfriend or two. The bits of Mal's journal we saw in Mallory and the Mystery Diary were totally cringe-worthy. I wished we'd seen more of it ;D If only I were thirteen instead of eleven. Life would be a picnic

I'm also a private person and would hate to have a room mate like Alexis. I mean bloody hell she read her journal, borrowed things without asking, hogged the space in the room, made stupid rules... and when she destroyed the care package, that made me feel really horrible for Mal. When I go to university, I'm hoping I'll get a single room because it would be hell if your room mate ended up being someone like Alexis (although in the UK, most rooms are single thankfully).

^ I get such an annoyed feeling reading about Alexis. I would have taken action to stop her long before Mallory did!

^ I also disliked Alexis. I couldn't feel very sorry for her, either, because she had no excuse for not knowing how to act. Get over your jealousy and insecurity or deal with it instead of taking it out on someone else. (I'm a bit bitter about this as I've been a major target of a jealous, vengeful person more than once and it's created big problems....) Even if she hadn't been taught how to behave (like the Delaney kids), she was old enough to learn on her own, in my opinion. This might be a little harsher than I mean for it to be as I don't remember this book extremely well. I need to reread I think before I form more opinions on Alexis. ;D I do remember, though, feeling awful for Mal when Alexis read her diary. I hate for my privacy to be violated (which is one reason I could never have a roommate in a situation like that - I need my space. ;D) This book reminded me again why I never wanted to go to boarding school. Of course, I'm a person who never even wanted to spend the night away from home as a kid. ;D

^ I need to re-read this one as well!
In all honesty, I think boarding school for Mallory was a bad idea. If she was the kind of kid to be bullied, being surrounded by classmates 24/7 and being without family support is just a bad combination.

^ Agree. I wouldn't have done well with it. I need my family. ;D
