Jordan's piano lessons were mentioned for the first time in #5, to explain how Jordan saw Buddy Barrett get in his dad's car. I think it just worked out that none of the Pike kids really had much personality that early in the series so nobody thought that Byron would have been a more logical choice.

that's true. it was weird that no other kid in the pike family took lessons of any sort. didn't they get jealous of jordan?

^ maybe the only option the Pikes offered was piano lessons and no one else wanted them?
They must've taken swimming lessons of some sort, it was never mentioned that Mallory was unable to swim. Or maybe the parents just taught them.

They must've taken lessons or been taught because the Pikes felt comfortable leaving the kids to swim/play in the ocean while supervised by two babysitters. At least, I hope they knew how to swim...

In the summer books people go to the pool fairly frequently, or go to swim in a friend's pool, so that plus the annual 2 week pike beach vacation must have given the pike kids plenty of swimming experience, even without formal lessons.

I always figured the Pike kids pretty much grew up learning to swim at a very early age due to the yearly trips to Sea City. I figured their parents taught them when they were pretty young.

That was probably Mr. and Mrs. Pike hoping Mallory would drown.

I'm sure the Pikes took the kids to swimming lessons when they were young. I don't really consider swimming lessons an extra fun thing, or a "luxury" like Mallory's riding lessons. I consider them a necessity, especially if you're going to be taking trips to the shore every year. Plus, in Island Adventure they say that the Pikes are big on boating. I doubt they'd take all those kids out on sailboats if they hadn't learned how to swim yet.

you mean the Pike parents didn't dump their kids on someone else and go out every night LOL! Now that would be a first! LMAO! That's just mean! Yeah, ITA. But if the Pikes couldn't afford to pay the entire cost of Mallory's horse-riding lessons, how could they afford swimming lessons for eight kids? They're not cheap.

Hmm... sea city did have lifeguards. The triplets also went to camp; i assume some of the other kids did as well. i never had swimming lessons; most kids i know didn't, actually. i think you just start off in the baby pools and learn your way up the swimming ladder. i also know my sister had to pass a "deep end" test to able to swim in the deep end at her town's pool or something.

I took swimming lessons in fourth grade. It was done through the school and my entire class had to participate.

I had the same thing in elementary school. Of course, the lessons almost made me drown as this kid who couldn't swim was holding on to a raft and accidently got it on top of me and forced me under the water. I couldn't get up and he couldn't get the raft to move because he was about to drown himself. It was really scary. Maybe the Pikes wanted their kids to take swimming lessons with hopes that something like this would happen and they would get rid of a few of them

I always thought swim lessons were pretty cheap. I took them as a kid and I don't remember them being expensive at all. I took them at the junior high school near my house, TONS of kids were in classes, they were like $15 a session (a session being 2 weeks, swim lessons 4 days a week). It's not like the Pike kids were getting private lessons, I'm sure they were in swim class with tons of other kids (IIRC, there were probably 6 or 7 kids per class when I took lessons).
I wasn't aware that a lot of kids didn't take swim lessons. I always saw tons of kids taking them and I assumed that it was just something you do. Then again, I live in Arizona where swimming is pretty much a must, so that may have something to do with it.

^ yeah, I don't know anyone my age who is unable to swim. I always thought that professional lessons were just par for the course as well.
