I'm surprised I didn't pick up on the Horse and Rider comment. I'll have to reread. I did think about the Arab thing but know that Arabs are the "horse of choice" for people who don't know much about horses because they picture the black stallion running down the beach or something. Give me a stock-type horse any day - especially for a beginner.

I liked this book a lot when I was ten or so because I was heavily into horses (still am. Because the only way a horse is perfect is if it's a pure-white Arab... yep, that pure-white thing bugged the hell out of me... unless he was an albino, but albino horses probably wouldn't be 'pretty' enough for Mal, what with the pink-ness and the wall eyes! Would riding schools have Arab horses anyway? Maybe a super-expensive one, but if I walked into a riding school here and spotted an Arab I'd think I was going nuts... Poor poor Gremlin My favourite pony was an absolute cow who was grumpy as hell and didn't take any nuts- she wasn't for beginners, but if you knew how to handle her she was a dream to ride. Why would they let beginners ride a horse like Gremlin? Sheesh.

Mine did, but he was originally privately owned and sold to the school when the owner outgrew him. He was far more amazing than Pax, IMO. And I'm not just saying that because he ended up being mine. And he was also not a beginner's horse. Sweet, not a mean bone in his body, but...boy was a spaz and a half. I love Arabs more than any other breed, but...not beginner's horses. They're just goofy. Alf (my guy, I did NOT name him, for the record) was the horse no one else would ride because he had a reputation for dumping riders. Looking back, I was an idiot to keep getting on him But I was blinded by a pretty face, I guess. He really WAS the sweetest horse ever. But a nice personality doesn't mean a horse is easy to ride! My first beginner's horse was just a nondescript horse, grumpy on the ground but a lamb to ride. Then I graduated to a clunky Quarter Horse who was like riding a pile driver. Then I ended up on a Thoroughbred who was really calm and sweet (and old), so hot-blooded horses can be good for new riders, but...still, an Arabian?! I would have liked it if Pax turned out to be the monster horse. Looks aren't everything, Mal, you of all people should know THAT! And Pax was definitely grey - he was lightly dappled "like marble."

Don't know if this has been mentioned on the post yet, but I was reminded of this highly amusing point of the book from the BSC Blog, when Jessi is "wiping her eyes" and says "He really is the most beautiful horse in the world. You're lucky to have known him, even if it was for a short time." What the hell Jessi?!

Oh my god, that really is hilarious. My horse was the love of my life (and was WAY more beautiful than Pax *points to icon*) but...seriously, Jessi, he's a horse. That she's known for a few weeks and is afraid of. For god's sake.

Wow! That statement does seem a bit dramatic. It's a horse!

Wow, you guys! I'm just catching up on this thread (for some reason I was avoiding it because I was thinking I'd never read the book yet! Wtf?) and I'm LOVING all the horse info. So interesting. I had no idea there was no such thing as a "white horse." And the Horse & Rider magazine thing.. you guys catch everything.

Leave it to "horse people" to be able to tell you anything you want to know about horses and much more than you want By the way, like your avatar mckay. Is that your horse? I know you mentioned having an arab.

Yeah, that's my boy Eat your heart out, Pax. Speaking of "Pax," Angelina Jolie's newest son shares a name with the Dream Horse himself. Which is all I can ever think of when I hear it.

I'm so jealous The closest I got (and possibly will get) to my own horse was horse camp in the summer and volunteering at the stables every weekend. Hehe, I keep thinking about the Dream Horse every time I hear about pax too. I used to have a ring that said 'pax' on it because I was a big Latin nerd, but now I'm wondering if subconsciously I was just a big BSC nerd.
