I didn't think there was a thread for this, but I could be wrong. I did check, though!
Abby can be kind of annoying in books narrated by other sitters, but she doesn't bug so much in her own books. There was some clumsy foreshadowing of that abusive dude, but when third-graders are your target audience, I guess you can't be too subtle.
I felt bad for Lou in this book -- she was only trying to be good, and Abby had written her off as some kind of creepy robot child before she even figured out why Lou was behaving that way. And note to Abby -- corduroys and a sweater are not the clothes Jenny Prezzioso wore when the BSC called her Miss Priss. It's not a prissy outfit at all!
Jessi was remarkably subdued for a subplot so appropriate for JessiIsBlacking.

What was the subplot? i think I only read this book once because I hate BSC-charity storylines.

Abby needs to do a history project for extra credit in social studies, and puts together a video about the Underground Railroad in Stoneybrook. Like those racists would have helped any runaway slaves >

Yeah, where WAS Jessi in this book? This probably would have been a better book had it been narrated by Jessi, but then again, knowing the ghost writers they would have gone way overboard on the PCness if it was. To me this book was a snooze and just a precursor to Claudia and the Terrible Truth. Did not like this one at all.

I didn't care too much for this book. It was just really poorly written and boring.

I didn't like this book either. I didn't like Abby's narration, but that was probably just the ghostwriter, and not Abby's personality. The history project parts were kind of boring. I was sorry to see the Addisons go, though, because Corrie Addison is my favorite client.

I always liked Corrie too.
I like the Underground Railroad project, but I pretty much hate all After-School Special books.

While reading this book, I really saw a change in the Papadakis' foster child. She wasn't a bad kid, she just wanted attention.

(Note to Kylie, this book has three threads started for it. Don't know if you are able to merge threads or want to delete/send the others to the retirement thread or let it go. I picked the one with the most posts (7, lol) to reply in.) babysittersclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bsc&action=display&thread=3558babysittersclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bsc&action=display&thread=3566So, anyway...this book obviously wasn't a big conversation starter. I must say that Lou wasn't someone I wanted to see again. This storyline was too similar to Danielle Cancer Girl's second book. Danielle was just good girl gone bad instead of Lou's bad girl gone good. Don't bring a character back just for the heck of it if you don't have a legitimate story for them. I didn't mind Abby's project because it was optional for extra credit and not something that everyone had to do for like 85% of their final grade, like so many other crazy projects those students had to do. Black History Month totally wasn't on my school district's radar, so good going Stoneybrook!

I felt bad for Lou. I can't believe that no one could figure out why Lou was acting the way she was. It seemed strange that it was Abby who was doing the extra credit for the underground railroad. I would've expected Jessi to do that.

Dawn and Mary Anne didn't give a hoot that it was the underground railroad. They were both caught up in the ghost story part that went along with their house in particular. (Which I admit was pretty awesome.) I don't think they thought about the historical importance of the passage at all, which is too bad because maybe Mary Anne wouldn't have been so terrified of it if she thought about it helping people.

^ i haven't read this book so i have absolutely no idea what it had to do with the underground railroad. the reason i brought dawn up was because the girls made such a HUGE deal about how the passage was a stop on the railroad. in the beginning they said it might have been and that would have been cool, and then for some reason they knew for sure, and so on. did you guys ever watch nick news with linda ellerbey? they used to have a segment about "my famous backyard" or something like that, and i could just see dawn bragging about how important the secret passage is.

Jessi was remarkably subdued for a subplot so appropriate for JessiIsBlacking. I also like Abby better in the books that she narrates; I don't like her much at all in other people's books. I'm not a Lou McNally fan, but I agree that Abby probably shouldn't have dismissed her behavior so quickly, and she shouldn't have gotten frustrated and yelled. Even so...I kind of like that she did. The fact that the BSC members are generally so patient and understanding with their charges probably isn't realistic. The sitters are still kids themselves, and it stands to reason that they'd get annoyed by the kids they sit for.
