thank you sotypical! I loved this book as well, and I cried so many times while reading it. I guess I'm like Mary Anne that way. It didn't really matter to me that I didn't know her from any other books, but I knew Amelia from this book. The whole Nibs thing got to me *tear*

I'm glad I'm not alone, blossom I cry over everything, I'm definitely like Mary Anne in that way, which is strange because in general I'm much more of a Kristy personality-wise. People are always so weirded out when they see me cry for the first time, haha. And I'm always like "no, it's okay, I'm fine, I just cry over everything!" lol.

^I'm a Mary Anne too. During movies I even cry at things that aren't sad.

Unfortunately, my school was in a similar situation as Mary Anne's. During my senior year of high school, I lost my 16 year old friend to a brain aneurysm. I was shocked, devastated, you name it. Like Mary Anne, I grieved not only for the loss of a friend but also for what could have been.

^ Sorry to hear that, bscfan. When I was in grade five, a boy died during Track and Field day (you know, when the whole school spends the day doing track and field events). I think he had a brain aneurysm as well. The entire school grieved, even though not everyone knew him. I loved this book, even though I can't get through it without crying and crying. I don't think the school's reaction was that unrealistic, especially given that SMS is a small school. I don't think Mary Anne's reaction was that over-the-top, either. True, she didn't really know Ameila, but I think many of you touch on a good point - part of her grief probably had a lot to do with what could've been. I also think it would've been particularly hard for Mary Anne, since she was one of the last few people to see her alive. A bit dramatic, yes, but that kind of stuff can get a bit freaky. I bet this book was the token dealing with death book, but I still really enjoyed it. It was very touching and sweet.

I liked this book as well. I'm glad I am not the only one. This was one of the BSC books that made me cry.
I don't think the school's reaction was that unrealistic because a similar thing happened in my high school. A girl died in a car crash and the whole school was really upset, even though some didn't know her.

This is the one I refuse to read because I know for a fact I could not get through it. I mean, I cry during BSC books that don't have anything to do with issues as serious as this....so no way am I attempting this one. We had a few kids die while I was in HS, one was in a car accident, one committed suicide, and one OD'd. I only knew one of them, but i grieved just the same for them all. I'm such a Mary Anne.

This is kind of OT but this lady who used to go to the same church and helped with my Sunday School class when I was 4 and she was a teenager died in a freak accident yesterday - was jogging down the road and hit by one of the cars as they crashed into each other. I hadn't seen her for years but I was really upset, still. Sometimes these things don't seem to affect me but I think I might be more like MA than I realize - letting it all build up - because I just can't seem to stop thinking about it and have felt just kind of "off" all day. I know it will be a while until I reread this one.

I know what y'all mean. I recently learned that a friend of mine from middle/high school was killed in a car accident (of sorts, she'd gotten out of the car to help a victim of another accident and was hit), and I was really upset. Mind, we hadn't spoken in years and we hadn't been particularly close, but it was still very sad.

I don't know what it was about my high school ...but we had over 2000 students, and it seemed like every year there was someone who died. I didn't know any of the students who died, but a friend of mine called me up and told me that a guy that was in her class (she was a grade a head of me) and been drag racing and was killed. It was sort of surreal in away, but I didn't really feel any strong emotions...maybe because I didn't know him? I felt bad though, it's depressing. However, a friend of mine died of brain cancer when I was eighteen, and i was devastated, and also that year, the guy who had been my science teacher for two summers in a row died I think of a heart attack, that was probably brought on by his heavy alcoholism...despite the fact that he drank a lot...he really was a cool teacher, and I was sad when I heard the news.

Was just thinking about this book and it's been a while since I read so maybe I just don't remember but wondered if anything was mentioned (other than the chapt 2 usual background) of Abby's dad dying in a car wreck (wasn't that how he died?). Was he hit by a drunk driver, too? For some reason, I was thinking he was. If so, I think they should have made a bigger deal out of this connection. If they did even mention it, I don't remember it at all so they must not have focused on it that much. Too bad as I think this would have been a good plot opportunity to show how Abby was reacting. Lots of stuff they could have done with that....

I think it was a drunk driver that killed Abby's dad. They could have developed that a little more with this book! I never thought of that

I never noticed before, but Amelia is mentioned in a book before this one. She sits in front of Claudia in one of her classes. That's the only mention of her I can recall, though.

I remember reading that too. Was glad to at least see her mentioned. That was one thing that always bugged me about this one is the books didn't mention Amelia - this didn't necessarily mean the girls didn't know her but the readers didn't.
