I just read this one too and liked it. Do we know how old Peaches is? It said she was much younger than Claudia's mom. I was amused that this is the second book where we're told how Claudia and Peaches have a super special great relationship and then they get into a big fight.
I liked the Philly trip and how they stayed in a not-so-hot hotel. I didn't quite get why the group left the museum and went back to the hotel when two of their members were missing. I was surprised that Claudia suggested sneaking out of the hotel room to get burgers immediately after she got into trouble.

^ I'm guessing Peaches is probably late 20's (holy cow, my age!!!) or early 30's.

I actually really like this book. It's has a good plot, but Claudia was so clueless about the baby thing. Melissa- she was alot like middle school kids I remember.

I agree. This books was one of my favorites. Claudia was TOTALLY clueless, I agree. It's also one of the most realistic books in terms of middle-school characterizations.

^What do you mean? More clingy girls who wanted to hang out with them? I thought we kinda decided that the BSC-ers were rather uncool among their peers but were so out of the loop that they didn't even notice. Melissa must have been beneath Mallory level of dorkdom, which is a hard thing to accomplish.

Just sort of dorky or socially awkward in general. Kids like Emily, Pete, Cokie, didn't really seem that way.

I also thought it was annoying how Claudia thought she was a newborn expert. She's thirteen- she can't have had that much experience.

I alwqays loved the colour of the cover of this book. I haven't read it in years, but I remember liking it. Isn't this the one where Logan makes some comment about Lynn's ultra sound photo?

It is indeed Kylie. Logan, lol, remarks that the photo resembles some sort of underwater fungus! I just checked and this takes place on page 9.

LOL. I would have thought the same thing when looking at the cover. Even though I never did that when I first read Karen's Baby. LoL

I reread this book shortly after I found out I was pregnant. Now that I'm basically just waiting around to go into labor, there are parts of this book that really annoy me!
--Peaches had a short labor, didn't she? Most first time moms spend the entire day in labor, if not longer. Short labors DO happen, just not all that often, from what I've heard. I'm surprised that Claudia's parents just decided to drive over to the hospital, without checking with Peaches and Russ first. Didn't they discuss anything beforehand? We don't have anything set in stone yet, but my parents and in laws have an idea of what to expect when I go to the hospital. Also, if this book took place now, Claudia and Janine wouldn't have been allowed into the maternity ward because of h1n1.
--Never really thought about the fact that no one else visited Peaches and Russ at home. Although it's not uncommon for new parents to want to wait a few weeks before having any company over. I'm sure Peaches was exhausted, in a lot of pain from giving birth and probably just wanted to spend some alone time with Lynn and Russ. I feel bad for her that Claudia overstayed her welcome. And CAME OVER EVERY DAY. Ugh.
--I'd be pissed if someone broke my coffeepot. I wonder what kind of replacement Claudia came up with. The good ones aren't cheap!
--Kind of funny about PPD, because Claudia was stressing out Peaches, which is a good way to bring on post partum depression.
Is it really that common to need a babysitter for a newborn so frequently? And don't most parents use grandparents at first? I dunno, I'd be okay with using a teenager for an older child, but for a child under 2...I just don't know that I'd be comfortable with it. I kind of feel like I'd prefer to have a close family member sitting for my kid.

What's even weirder, in my experience/opinion, is that that the book says they gave her Pitocin to induce after she got to the hospital. I mean, maybe she was in labor all day before they leftl, but they call the BSC around six and the Kishis get home by 10:45. . .that seems REALLY fast for me, for a labor without complications. Should we add childbirth to the list of "things Ann knows nothing about"? Good luck and congratulations! My brother and I were both speedy deliveries (six hours for him, not even one for me) and I'm REALLY hoping that's something that runs in families, lol.

congratulations janey! i really like this book, except the part where she was all jumpy and on edge seemed really overdone. but the part that really stuck with me was how easy it was for thirteen year old girls to sneak out of their hotel room in a strange city. don't the teachers tape the doors or something? but i thought claudia seemed so sweet in general. it was really great of her to care so much for lynn, and want so much to be around her. sometimes family members can become really jealous of new babies but claudia was genuinely excited. if i were janine i would have stuck up for myself more, but that really doesn't sound like janine.

Why can't anyone in these books have a conversation before things get out of hand? When Claudia showed up the second day, at 8 am on a Saturday, Russ or Peaches should have told her "We're glad you're so excited about Lynn, but you need to call before you come over and you can't come before x o'clock." They kept inviting her in when she showed up every day and inviting her for supper when she stayed forever instead of telling her they were going to start cooking and she'd better go home. By the time Peaches snapped at her, Claudia had been really annoying, but she's a 13 year old who sometimes just doesn't think things through. Even if they didn't want to tell her to get out, they could have called her parents and said Claudia was just over way too much and it was overwhelming and they needed to make her stop. (I suppose it would have been a very short book if they set appropriate boundaries on the second day, but I'm just saying.)
Why did Claudia care so much that Melissa was being "totally rude" and ignoring her roommate Lily? On every school trip I ever went on, people just hung out with their friends regardless of assignments, and we know Melissa put Claudia down as her preferred roommate. Maybe even though we kept being told how nice Lily is, Melissa just doesn't like her and doesn't want to hang out with her constantly for two days.
I think my sister would be a little weirded out if I named my (very hypothetical) baby after my niece. I don't find it unusual to name a baby after a family member but usually that person is older than middle school.
Maybe Peaches and Russ picked Claudia to be the godmother because they thought she'd be around more. Janine the SUPAR GENIUS is going to go off to college soon and get a decent job and probably move across the country; Claudia will muck around and try to get into art school and have a hard time finding her footing. Also while reading this book I randomly wondered why Janine never skipped a grade. Karen Brewer skipped, and she was nowhere near genius level, and Charlotte J skipped a grade (even though the ghosties messed that up constantly) despite having pretty lacking social skills, so it's not something that was never done in Stoneybrook schools. Janine so could have been about to graduate instead of being a high school junior who takes college classes.
When the Arnolds finished watching the documentary on the making of Horrorville, was anyone else not surprised that they started asking how special effects were done in... ...wait for it... ... ...The Wizard of Oz?
Sorry, long, I had a lot of thoughts about this book I guess.
