^ I have to agree with that sparklymouse, if I was ever in that situation I would want to audition and see if I made it, and then make the decision. Otherwise I would have been mad at myself for a really long time.

You're right, but if I'd tried out, got in, and then my parents said no, I would NEVER have forgiven them. Partly for saying no, and partly for getting my hopes up. It's cruel.
But then, this is BSC Land and they would never say no....

This is my favorite Jessi book. I liked reading about her NY ballet friends. It's too bad that she didn't join the school after Mallory went to boarding school.

^I never understood why she didn't. I also thought she sounded plenty "ready" to adapt to living in NY at that time though too. Maybe I just wanted to be rid of her.

I like to think that Jessi did, eventually, move to NY to be a part of Dance NY. Maybe when she got to high school???

^ I always liked to think that Jessi moved to NY to be a part of Dance NY as well. I haven't given a thought as to when but I always thought that she would.

I started reading this book today because I knew that it takes place in January. Since January is coming up, I was in the mood. I am a big fan of reading a BSC book during the time/season/month that it takes place (or was published in, too!)

Like jen mentioned on the first page, the Becca sub-plot reminded me too much of "Jessi and the Jewel Theives". You would have thought that an editor would have picked that up, but with the amount of time the BSC was written over, and the amount of editors at Scholastic, I bet they had different people reading different books at different times...
Like others on the forum, this was one of my favourite Jessi books. I remember getting it when it first came out with "Babysitter's Christmas Chiller" when my Nana went to a big city an hour away (think if my city was Stoneybook and the city she went to was Stamford) with her friend. She brought them back for me and I was so excited! Even around 13 years later (if the book was published in January 1998) , I can *still* remember her giving them to me and looking at the covers, and even opening up and reading them!
I thought, at fist, that all the ballerina talk would be too much. But I think that Lerangis did a good job of mixing the ballet plots with Jessi's social life -- BSC and New York friends -- her traveling around New York, and her relationship with her family.

I think, particularly after Mal left for and settled happily into Riverbend, that Jessi would have gone to Dance NY for High School, if not earlier. Jessi going there made a lot more sense than the "Spaz Girl" arc sending Mal to MA.

Hey zoar3, they mention in the FF series that Jessi is so involved in ballet (in Welcome Home, Mary Anne, Jessi is rarely in the books and decline's Mallory's offer to take classes over the summer because she is too busy with ballet). My assumption was that she eventually drifted away from the BSC and to her Dance NY friends.

^Good point, Virgo. I am not a FF fan but have read them all and do remember Jessi dropping out of the BSC. I never did give thought to the idea that once she became more involved in ballet in Stoneybrook that could very well lead her to deciding to move to NY.

Jessi really made me mad in this one. The way that she treated Mal and how she was glad Mal left. Then when she poo poo'ed her friendship with the BSC b/c they didn't know who ballet stars are and what a certain position in ballet was. Screw you Jessi! This book just made me dislike her so much. By the end, I wanted her to stay both for her and for the BSC. It almost reminded me of Stacey and the BSC (minus the fight of course). I wonder why they didn't just write Jessi off here like the did with Mal a little later?

^ i actually really love that jessi kind of starts to act that way. believe it or not, people are allowed to have other friends :] and it makes sense that someone who has been doing nothing but ballet for a while is still in a ballet frame of mind, and wants to share that with her friends. no matter what i'm doing, when i really get into a new project or class or something, i love to share it with my friends. at this point jessi is used to dropping ballet names and terms and not having to elaborate. she is feeling more comfortable now than she has ever felt and it's hard having to switch back into her old self.
but mostly, nobody should ever feel guilty for being happy. even though mallory is her best friend, the situation was awkward and i don't blame her for wanting it to end. feeling relieved that the trip is over doesn't make her a bad friend.

I see your point to that and can understand it. Makes me feel not as mad, but I did feel like Jessi forgot all about her friends back home which I guess i just don't like

i can understand Jessi. I have a lot of friends who also do Russian stuff (PhDs, etc.) and when you have something that is such a large focus of your life, it's nice to have people who "get it."
