What a typical KAren. It would have been somewhere between interesting and embarrassing if this story had also been told in a LS book.

I thought that it was ridiculous that Jessi thought that Derek was the character was the character he played. I would've thought that at her age, she would've known the difference between the actor and the character on tv. I did like the interaction between Jessi and her family where they talked about L.A.

This is so weird, I was just watching full house clips and then went on this board and this was the first topic I clicked, not knowing that we'd be talking about Full House.

So I was rereading this awful pos and I found a redeeming passage from Kristy's babysitting experience w/Karen and friends
Hahaha - I don't know why this made me laugh for days b/c I never really liked Karen and I think she does chew everyone else's life!

One part that did bother me slightly was when Jessi was bursting to tell everyone about a great idea (which ended up being a surprise party). Yawn. Surprise parties aren't that genius, Jessi. In fact, in the BSC they're almost as common as baby parades (haha).
This book should have been called Jessi and the Superstar or Movie Star rather than Superbrat. Because although Derek was "bratty" to his classmates, he wasn't a complete Superbrat. And the cover photo is taken out of context because the triplets started the fight - and it was really 3 vs. 1. Derek was just retaliating. Also, they never addressed the deep seeded issues Derek was having. It was almost made into comedy. Oh, Derek tied classmates shoelaces together because he wanted to be friends with them. Ha-ha. It's not that funny...

^Did Derek play the "tricks" on classmates or on himself? I haven't read this in forever but am almost thinking it was both. I remember him admitting to toppling a tray in the cafeteria (I think it was his own...maybe now since that wouldn't make much sense) We never did see "live" other than the afternoon at the playground when Derek makes four friends any of his peer interactions. If he and Nicky were such good friends there could have been one brief scene of just them hanging out at SES. ITA that tying shoelaces together does not equal funny at all. I think this is one more instance where more "show" and less "tell" would have made the story better. Since this was the first Derek book, there should have also been at least one direct memory of his earlier life in CT. I don't think (remember) it saying how long it had been since he moved to LA. Now, I'm threatening to go off on a complete tangent. This could have really made a great chapter in "Nicky's Book" had each Charge had a portrait. It could have shown the two of them trying to fit in, find their place. Maybe we might have to get writing some of these tales!

^ It's mentioned that he played the tricks on other kids, I believe, in order "to make friends." Jessi and him then joke about it. Which I thought was weird... they never got to the root of Derek's emotional issue. I guess a surprise party can cure anything!

Thanks, Virgo. I guess one random early morning surprise party can cure all. I'm glad it did but seems so unlikely. The other thing I didn't like was after all the build up, Derek and his family take off. We never see any life after "John." The entire story vanishes. I'm not a Derek fan anyway but if you're going to spend an entire book droning on about a character, might as well make the ending better. Oh well.

It also bothered me that Derek wasn't that much of a Superbrat, like the title suggests.

If he wasn't a superstar, he would have been labelled a problem child or ADHD for all those pranks LOL

How about Wesley from Mr. Belvedere? That's what I pictured him to look like anyway.
