I'm picturing Derek as one of those child actors who never does much else after PS 162 ends. Probably because there are so many kid actors from 90s sitcoms that dropped off the radar after their shows were cancelled, like Jodie Sweetin, or pretty much all the kids on Step by Step.

The other day in ballet class we were learning the Cygnets' Dance that members of the corps do in Swan Lake. It's hard, and we weren't even doing it on pointe, or holding hands with each other like they do in the actual ballet -- since everyone is connected, if one person does something wrong, probably Bad Things will happen. The idea of an eleven-year-old who only takes two ballet classes a week being able to keep up with the rest of the corps in a professional production is so unrealistic that it's hilarious.

^Minkus has been on One Tree Hill for the past nine years. Don't worry, you haven't missed anything. He didn't outgrow his dorkiness.

I never thought of Derek's character = Minkus. Kinda wonder what BMW would have been like if he'd stuck around!

Why oh why did I bother reading any of this last night? Bleh. I think what makes this one worse is that it follows "Claudia and the Sad Goodbye." If this was supposed to be an attempt to lighten things up in Stoneybrook following Mimi's death, it sure (IMO) failed. What bothered me most this time around was it seemed like both Todd (especially) and Derek were almost completely ignored for Todd and Derek. I did appreciate Claudia spending alone time with Todd while Derek played with his four new friends (once again go Claud for having the idea that saved the day). However, Jessi was worse than Becca because face it she is 11 and ought to know better! I know this is Stoneybrook. Maybe that is exactly why it bugged me that Mrs. Masters who was coming from LA, hoping to transition Derek back into a regular life said nothing to the BSC about that. She should have pointed out that Derek just wanted to be treated as a regular kid and while she could understand if any of the members were excited at meeting Derek the star to remember he was an 8 year old boy. Other thing is, I'm guessing the BSC was recommended by the Pikes, but it came across to me as less believable that a newcomer to Stoneybrook would automatically be okay with 11 year old Jessi sitting for her 8 and 4 year old sons. Mrs. Masters may not have even known Jessi's age, I understand that, just the idea if that makes sense. Other thing that was really annoying was Dawn. Her change has officially begun. Do we really care (twice) that she had to interject healthy breakfast items for the party? It was almost as if she was daring the others to protest. She should have simply brought whatever she chose as her contribution. End of story. But then where would the Dawn drama be? Oh well, onto welcoming Stacey back to Stoneybrook!

^ DO you think this book is when Dawn really started to get obnoxious? I've never managed to pinpoint exactly when that happened, and it's been a couple of years since my own chronological reread.

^Honestly, she gave hints of being obnoxious in "Ghost" when she took up a few sentences about the ice cream cone. The one time she was actually considerate was at the Schafers Memorial Day Picnic in #5. IIRC, that was the only time she (and no one else in her "defense") made no comment about what others at the party ate. In Summer Vacation, she tells us how she choked down a hot dog rather than starve, that never bugged me. MA was the problem in the pizza party before Sea City (Boy Crazy Stacey) when she insisted they do what Dawn wanted (food wise). I know Dawn ate the marshmallows in revenge on Claudia in #12. Does anyone remember what book before that she stopped eating snacks (the regular ones) at Claudia's during meetings?

I love that she was "so angry" that she ate marshmallows that Claudia probably didn't even know were there. She picked probably the cheapest treat to replace too. Lol. Honestly, I thought Kristy could get as annoying about health food as Dawn did about junk food. Everyone needed to just shut up about each other's eating habits.

Didn't they pass out gummi worms at the meeting where they decided to let Jessi and Mal be in the club, and instead of eating hers, Dawn just played with it? Why even take one if you don't want it? I seem to remember her saying something snarky about it, too, but can't recall exactly what.

^The only Kristy moment I remember seemed completely out of character was from "Baby-sitters' Remember." Kristy straight up tells us that she does not approve of Claud's snacking habits. Well said, Sparklymouse. They all, especially Mary Anne, needed to let the others enjoy whatever in peace. If anyone wanted to bring something new, it should have been done in an "I just tried this recipe and enjoyed it, thought you might, too. Feel free to try it if you want." End of story.
Candykane, they did pass out Gummi worms exactly as you described. I am not finding where it is. "Hello, Mallory," ends before they are "official." I didn't see any mention of gummi worms just now quickly skimming #15. I know I did just read such a thing. I think Dawn said something about eating worm heads, IDK.

^ i don't remember her making a comment about it, but i thought the same thing. the way those other girls threw themselves at the junk food and claimed to be starving every meeting, surely she could have left it for someone who would actually eat it, instead of just getting her hands sticky.

It was in #14, but it was the chapter where Mallory went to the BSC meeting and they told her she flunked her test. Mr. Perkins called them to say Mrs. Perkins and Laura were coming home from the hospital, and Claudia passed out gummi worms to celebrate. Dawn said "Not only are these worms junk food, but they're disgusting. I personally do not see how you guys can eat worm heads."

I'm sure someone out there makes vegetable shaped gummy candies. I would laugh out loud if Claudia ever pulled out something like that for her.
