What about the presents she gets everyone? I think it broke down like this: Kristy - Catcher's mitt Abby - Catcher's mitt Claudia - Art kit Stacey - Leopard print earmuffs and scarf Dawn - Two pairs of earrings made from recycled cans Jessi - Tickets to the Nutcracker Mallory - Photo album
Yeah, you can tell who her favorites are there LOL. Jessi gets tickets to a ballet performance in Stamford, Mallory gets a dinky little photo album? And she even says something like "She can fill it with pictures of all her siblings!" It's not enough that she's her family's live-in nanny, her present from Mary Anne reflects that too? Geez, everyone truly hates Mallory. Why couldn't she have gotten her a blank journal and some nice pens, or a gift certificate to the bookstore or something?
And I picture the art kit she got Claudia as one of those ones you got as a kid, with the markers that ran out almost instantly, and the crayons and messy pastels.
And I'm agreeing with you all - what was Richard thinking giving a CREDIT CARD to a 13-year-old girl?

^ Didn't Dawn get a matching necklace to go with her earrings?

^ Yes! And Mary Anne makes sure to get her sets of earrings because she has two piercings in each ear and then she's like "Oooooooh, a matching necklace!" and Kristy is trying to warn her that her shopping spree's going too far LOL. Geez, this just makes Mallory's present look more pathetic! I bet she put the least amount of ribbons and bows on it too when she wrapped it too.

Didn't see this addressed in seven pages of commentary, so here goes:
I have a copy of Amalia diary one in front of me. Dawn makes refrences to things that happened in CD universe. Dawn makes an apperance in Amalia's party (dated Januart 1st.) But doesn't Dawn stay traditionally until school starts, i.e. celebrates the new year in CT? Or am I getting confused?
Agreed on the Angela issue. But I got the feeling that whatever really happened between Angela and her parents, there was more then she was telling Mary Anne.

^ Yeah, there always IS more to the story when it comes to things like that. I never wanted to take any of the blame for things that happened to me when I was that age, and even though I was right to feel that way in SOME cases, there were others where I could have been more fair.

I re-read this one the other day. The whole credit card issue is probably more relevant today than when it was written. Finally a BSC book that stands the test of time! ;D Reading through the thread, I can't believe so many people were on Mary Anne's side. I'm Team Richard on this one. It's one of those don't do the crime if you can't do the time moments. The main reason I didn't feel any sympathy for Mary Anne is because she made the decision not to return anything after she learned about the interest and paying Richard back so quickly. Who cares if they were wrapped already? They weren't given out to people.
I had no real thoughts on the sub-plot except LMAO the thing was called Santa-Hanukkah-Kwanzaa. Not Christmas. Santa.

I agree with you Sparklymouse. I honestly can't believe even in BSC Land that Richard would give his 13 year old daughter his card ( I just had a thought in real life MA would have been 23 in 1997 so lol maybe for this book she was older at last)? and certainly not do so without explaining how it worked. He could even shown her one of his old bills. Also, why would the cashier accept the card from her to begin with? It would have been much more realistic if Richard had either given MA or allowed her to use her baby-sitting money to purchase a pre-paid card! It's also strange that Richard didn't ask Mary Anne exactly what she planned on buying to begin with or what her budget was. In Kristy's Portrait it was said she was a Shortstop. Later in the same book, Patrick gives her a freebie Mitt he got and the Watson buys her a left handed version of the Glove. I don't remember what position it was for just outfield. I THINK in yet another book Kristy mentions needing a new Glove for some position other than Shortstop. David Michael caught (and pitched) in several Krushers games so maybe that was who Jeanne Betancourt, the Ghostie thought she was writing about? Baseball Mitts are very expensive and I'd think two alone would cost close to if not more than $100. MA must have had some serious $$$ to spend or think she had to spend. Yeah, I did wonder that she gave Abby the same thing. I did feel badly for Mal, too as it sounded like her gift was more to get her a gift. More than the credit card and gifts though, I would have thought Richard and Sharon might have been even a little upset at MA and the person who hired her for not notifying them first. Also, not one spotted her until Hunter during the supposed crazy season at the mall? As an after thought to that, it occurred to me that the appliction MA filled out must have truly only the very bone basics and was never looked at again (if even other than super quick skim the same day it was filled out and MA was hired) I mean normal applications ask for your phone number. To say nothing of previous work and educational experience. Did MA say she was a SHS student and had held actual jobs? To get a job that easily would sure be great. The Angela parts... Not a positive feeling from them.

Zoar3, regarding the mall job. I didn't understand it at all the first time I read it, but after re-reading and reading every one's theories on here I think it really was just a "you're alive, you're hired, you show up, you get paid" sort of job. Someone up thread said maybe they got paid in cash and that was how Mary Anne got past the age problem. She and Angela were given envelopes with their pay in them on their final day of work, so that was probably the case. Places don't really cut a payroll check for you the hour before your shift is up.
My favorite part of the whole book was when Mary Anne/Dawn/Logan were at the mall and Santa/Merv said hi to MA. Dawn and Logan were like "OMG, how does Santa know you?!?"

And she was like "I thought it would be funny to call him Marv." Nice one, Mary Anne

Sparklymouse, I agree. Ms. Cerasi was probably thrilled in way to have MA so eager to take a less than perhaps desirable job. BooBoo, at least it wadn't "John!"

Did it say (maybe I missed it) what gigundoly expensive gifts (afterall as MA herself basically said the more extravagent the gift, the more it would show how she felt about the person--nice message Ann MA got her Dad, Jeff, Logan, or Shannon? I know what she got everyone else (poor Mal) just not them.
Also, on the sexual reference note, when MA arrives for her first day of work and is in the dressing room to put on her elf costume she comments that Angela was in there only wearing a bra and a slip. Do we really care? Wouldn't it have sufficed to say Angela had not yet changed into her costume. Or was MA blown away by Angela's petite beauty as she was by Stacey's....chest in Sea City?
I still don't get how MA managed to delude her Dad and Sharon about her secret job for two weeks but hey this is BSC land.

Yep, Mary Anne quite appreciates the female form.
And I don't think we hear about those four gifts...I guess I can understand Jeff and Shannon, but it seems odd that she doesn't mention what she bought her dad and boyfriend.

That she does. Or Ann as Mary Anne, does!
I would think since such a big issue in chapter 2 or Mary Anne's opening chapter is always made about Richard and how he used to be versus how he is now and that he and MA are so much closer, she would mention what she got him! Since Logan and his family is involved a lot in this story, that makes no sense either.

I saw New Moon at the movies last weekend, and the part near the beginning where Charlie (Bella's dad) gives Bella a nice digital camera and a photo album for her birthday and says that the camera is from him and the album is from her mother reminds me of Mallory getting the photo album from Mary Anne, and everyone else getting really nice stuff.

Mary Anne is the one who buys the photo album in Clue in the Photograph for Dawn's gift and one of the charges calls it ugly, so...her photo album choosing skills are probably not the best ;D
