Oh! Yeah, looking at the context, "out of character" makes more sense!
MA was usually OOC if she's supposed to be the way she's described in Chapter Two.

Hehe, sorry. Yes, out of character. Thats true, but movie choices especially.

I just read this one and felt the need to comment on it. I haven't read this one in awhile and generally don't get freaked out by mysteries but this one really actually made me jump! The part about the house going up in flames creeped me out, and Stacey and Charlotte seeing those bony hands was really creepy. I actually liked it though but will never read it again at night.

The most disturbing thing is that when Stacey sees the house go up in flames, she's hallucinating, but once she realizes that, the fact that she had a hallucination does not freak her out. And it's not like it's something that she sees for a fraction of a second, either. She looks away and then looks back at the house again, and she still sees the fire and a person calling for help. It's only when she looks a third time that the house is back to normal.

^ Or did she really see it??? ;D The mystery was never solved. ;D I kind of liked that aspect of this one but did find it weird. I also liked it how they visited the old guy. Charlotte's subplot was definitely my favorite part but I did get into the "mystery" and creepy aspect of this one a lot more when I just reread it.

Well, she doesn't describe it as hallucinating, she describes it as letting her imagination run away with her, but when you actually, literally see something in front of you that is not happening, and you stare at it for quite a bit before it goes away, you are freakin' hallucinating. Unless you accept the alternate explanation that she is watching a ghost of the house go up in ghost flames? Because no one else sees the fire, and it even goes back to normal for Stacey, too.

^ I know that's what hallucinating is and that is technically what happened but I was just trying to lighten things up (once again I failed at this ;D) and say that "ohhh, maybe it was a ghost...." since I think that's the impression that the writer was trying to give to readers to be "spooky". I always thought Stacey was trying to explain away the ghost possibility to herself. In my opinion, looking at this situation from a totally rational perspective to say that she's hallucinating would require saying that about almost every ghost story and I just don't want to take the fantasy and fun out of that around Halloween. ;D I guess we should all just interpret it however we want, though. ;D

What about that scene in the book where they're sitting for the Pikes and they have a smorgasboard and put on a play. They do The Wizard of Oz, with Vanessa (speaking in rhyme) playing Dorothy, Nicky playing Toto (who gets so bored that he decides to count to a 1000 in 2s), Claire plays a Munchkin (with lots of 'silly-billy-goo-goos' added in ;D), Margo plays Glinda, Adam plays the Scarecrow, Jordan plays the Lion and Byron plays the Tinman (whose costume apparently is the cleverest... something to do with a funnel... God what is it with Byron and funnels? Doesn't he use a funnel for his instrument in Mallory on Strike as well?). Also Mal plays the Wizard and Dawn plays the Witch, frightening Claire. It was a cute babysitting job

^ I had forgotten that chapter. That is very cute, especially the funnel and (never thought of Byron's fascination ;D) and Claire getting scared. Mal seems to make a good wizard. ;D

I haven't read this book in awhile, but I DID have a random thought about it yesterday. When Stacey is describing how stir-crazy she and Charlotte are getting after Charlotte's been home sick for several days, she says she's sick of being Professor Plum in Clue. She doesn't say she's sick of the game, just the character. Why didn't she just pick a different one? There's six of them, after all.

^ ;D I think she was saying she was sick of the game but just phrasing it like that trying to make it sound funny (if this makes any sense). I don't think she's being literal. Who wrote this one? Some of the ghost writers have trouble expressing humor sometimes, I've noticed.

Maybe Charlotte throws a Jenny P-like fit if Stacey plays someone other than Professor Plum. Then again, I can't see Charlotte doing that, but my nephew may...

When I was younger I thought it was because Charlotte insisted they play the same two characters every time or something.

She should've picked Miss Scarlett, she was always my favourite.

Clue doesn't seem like a game that would work with only two people somehow. I think I tried once and you needed at least three...
