Ooh, chilly! What bothers me about BSC Land is how after the girls have boy troubles, there's always someone new by the end. Like in Stacey's Broken Heart, she and Robert break-up, but luckily she met Ethan! Or in Stacey and the Mystery Money, Terry leaves but Sam calls and pretty much tells her he wants to get back together! Okay, I admit I haven't read Dawn and the Older Boy (but I totally want to, if only for the snark-tastic moments I've heard of!), but it seems that she starts writing to Lewis right after the Travis fiasco. Why can't these girls stay single for a while? Or better yet, why can't I find a new boyfriend immediately I've broken up with the last one? Seriously, though, it seems to ruin the experience and take away anything they may have learned from it when they're practically in LUV with some other guy at the end of the book.

haha, good point, I've never thought about that, but you're right. Some new guy comes along to rescue the broken-hearted babysitter. She does start writing to Lewis after the Travis thing, I think Older Boy ends with her letters to him. Although, to be fair, she is against the whole lewis idea at first.

This book was hilariously snarkworthy, starting with the cover. It's true that Travis looks at least 35 (hardly a "boy").
Why, on her dates, does Dawn always end up at places filled with bratty-looking children? (Isn't one blowing a straw wrapper or something on this cover? Then there is the cover of "Dawn's Big Date"...)
I did love Dawn's "I was already a beauty!" line -- also the one preceding it ("I've sure you've turned her into a real beauty, Travis," Sarah murmured.) So Travis makes a HABIT of visiting random young girls and making them over ... with Sarah's blessing? Weird!

Just reread and this one is very strange. I just don't get Travis and his motives. He really seems to take a genuine interest in Dawn. I can totally see how she gets the impression that he likes her as I sometimes wondered that myself. I know Wes led Stacey on just because he was clueless and trying to be nice and Scott in Sea City did the same because he was just naturally a flirt with everyone who paid attention to him. But Travis seemed to seek Dawn out. And I can't see the motives for the makeover, either. That is a strange hobby for a 16 year old guy.... I kind of took Sara's comment as being a bit sarcastic but am not sure on that, either.

I always found Travis a weirdo also. Firstly, it's a bit of an age difference, not that it doesn't happen, but still. Secondly, he did seem to hold a genuine interest in Dawn, but what kind of interest I do not know. And whoever made the comment about Dawn moving on after each guy problem was so right

I just read this one, and you guys were right about it not making much sense. I felt like yelling at Dawn in the end when she calls Travis. It sounded like we were about to get an explanation for Travis's odd behavior... but nooo Dawn keeps on talking. I wanted to hear what Travis was going to say!!

^ That annoyed me, too. And I always got the feeling that Dawn didn't ever catch on that Travis might not have really been interested in her. The "I'm not the girl for you" comment always makes me both want to laugh and shake some sense into Dawn at the same time. But maybe I'm wrong and Travis really did like her....

^No, I think you're right, just because if he did like her, it wasn't enough for him to give up his girlfriend. I feel like if this weren't a BSC book, Travis's interests would have been a lot less benign, the idea of which I dislike because the books are my "comfort reading" -- wholesome, and everything's always okay after fifteen chapters. Could be why I never got into CA Diaries.

^ Totally agree. ;D On the CA Diaries, too. The issues are too weighty. I like reading about innocent characters and a time when things were "good" in my childhood instead of the real issues that I can read about or see all around me. This one was just too weird, though. I did detect a bit of sarcasm in Sara's comment about turning Dawn into a beauty and wonder what her thoughts really were on it. I have a feeling she might have had a bit more to say after Dawn walked away....

I don't understand Travis, either. He totally sought Dawn out. He randomly showed up at her house, and I do think he liked her. I think he was a freakin' perv, too. I think he just wanted attention from as many girls as possible and when he got called on it from Dawn, had his excuse all handy. His girlfriend is an idiot for believing him and being okay with her 17 year old bf hanging out with a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD.

^ Totally agree! I never understood what his motives were. Never thought about him just wanting attention but I think you're right. I always doubted that Sarah was really okay with the whole thing. She sounded kind of sarcastic with the "real beauty" comment.

Especially considering the BSC aren't what you might call 'mature' in the way some 13 year olds are today.

I would be very confused if my boyfriend was buying presents for an eighth grader.

^ I just sort of assumed that Travis's apparent habit of trying to make over 8th graders was some joke that Sara was in on.
