I would be really mad that my bf was a borderline pedophile.

I recently reread this book as well and I get the vibe that Travis was GAY! Seriously, it would explain his constant need to make girls over, I mean what straight guy acts like that? I mean I just get a gay vibe from him, he brags about his sports to make himself seem macho or something and he was interested in Dawn, just interested in making her look better. LOL this was a weird book and hopefully my explanation makes it less like WTF!

^ That might make sense. Travis was unlike any guy I've ever known. He was certainly strange.... I guess we need to see him in whatever way makes it less confusing for each of us since the writers left enough open to question ;D As for me, I just see him as creepy and odd for whatever reason.

I never thought of Travis as gay - just as an egomaniac who wants attention and validation from any and every girl he can get it from.

I'm rereading, and it's finally hitting home for me how poorly written this one was! It was always one of my favorites, and I still like it for nostalgia's sake, but I could have probably written a better book. That being said, I'm kind of liking the way Dawn changes herself (or feels she has to) for Travis. As much of an individual as she is, doing something like that at that age is pretty realistic. I sure as heck did it, and it makes Dawn seem a little more human.

Pretty telling of course that Dawn actually never learns her lesson in this book because she turns around and does pretty much the same thing when Lewis comes into town.

^Ha ha, that is so true! I haven't read this in a while, but I really do like it and I'm glad Dawn told Travis off. I love the Lewis book too... The Dawn-changing-herself-for-a-guy seems to be one of my favourite themes, *lol*. (Glad that Dawn never sent Travis a postcard of a woman's legs hanging over a chair... *shudder* He was a bit of a creep, and I doubt he would have reacted as 'Stay away from me, weirdo' as Lewis did.)

^I thought so, but I wasn't sure. Here lately, I've only been reading books with lots of the Pike triplets.

It could be interpreted that way... he was certainly kind of odd (not that gay men are odd or anything! Just that it seems like there was something else about Travis). I felt it hysterical that out of all the BSC characters, it is Dawn the 'individual' who changes herself for guys ;D

I was just thinking about this book today. I don't know why, because it's not like I read it recently. It's funny that others mentioned how weird it was for Travis to talk about the things he did - like telling Dawn to cut her hair to give it more "lift" and get another set of holes in her ears. And shopping for jewelry? What teenage guy is interested in those things?
Besides that, Travis seemed very boring. Talking incessantly about your car and how awesome you are at sports is such a giant snooze. I wonder...if he and Dawn didn't have California in common, would she have still been as into him? The California connection seemed like the initial thing that got her all giddy about him. That, and his supposed good looks.
One thing I did like about this book was the fact that Lewis appeared later on in Dawn's Big Date, instead of their pen-pal relationship just being mentioned in this book and then being dropped.
