Ohhhhh, Kevin G!
You know George Singh just spent that whole competition making under-the-breath muttered comments about having Stacey down on the floor.

I liked this one pretty well but admit to skipping over the math stuff - I read the BSC books to relax Of course, I had told my dad about the math stuff in it and after he finished Stacey's Choice (and loved the subplot) since I made him read at least one book by each sitter, I noticed that this book wasn't on my shelf. Dad had it and was reading it Last night, he was all thrilled to show me the solution to the last puzzle because he spent forever trying to figure them all out. It is pretty cool - anyone else get it? His other comments on the book were that Stacey is really smart and her dad is a jerk - I agree with both of those points Anyone else spend time trying to figure out the math stuff?

The last problem made me want to barf, though. If I were George Singh, I totally would have been pissed that the competition was decided by a problem that was only vaguely based on arithmetic. I don't even like math and I was pissed that the competition was decided by a problem that was really easy and had little to do with math.

^ What was the problem? It's been a while since I've read this one. Was it the riddle with the pictures? I remember this book as being okay but having way too much math stuff in it for me ;D Fine to skim, though

Yeah, it was the riddle of the pictures, where it shows the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 next to their mirror images, and you have to say what "symbol" will come next. I didn't actually reread this whole book recently, I just felt like seeing what the math problems were, because I couldn't really remember them. I reread all the math question parts.

^ Thanks. Usually I do the opposite with this one and read everything except the math problems ;D

Heee! The first time I saw Mean Girls, I immediately thought of this book.
I remember reading this book as one of my last attempts to hold onto the series. I had seriously grown out of the BSC by this point but wasn't ready to let go. That's the only possible explanation I have as to why I would read a book about math, BSC or not. (I'm more of a Claudia when it comes to the subject...)
Stacey was so obnoxious! She was such a flake during the entire thing. I loved her semi-meltdown she has, where she threatens to quit the BSC. Such a drama queen.
The math fair was stupid, too. I'm in total agreement with sotypical, as if the SES kids are EXCITED over a math fair. Yeah right. And didn't Claire freak out because she was too young to be in it? Again, yeah right. Like a 5 year old would care about a math fair.

^ Maybe Claire just cared because she was the only Pike not able to be in it. I know I sometimes really want to do what I can't just because I can't (if this makes sense). I don't remember much about this one and will have to reread. I don't remember Stacey being obnoxious but like I said, don't really remember the book. Agree it's not realistic that the kids would be so excited over math but it is a nice thought ;D

Yeah, I agree that maybe Claire just wanted to be in it because her older brothers and sisters were, although I think it's dumb that all the kids who were actually in the math fair were so excited about it.

^ I actually considered that too, but...I dunno. I can understand that being the youngest in such a big family, Claire would want to be included, but she whines about that an awful lot. With so many - if not almost all - of the events the BSC plans, Mal begs them to have the cut-off age be 5 so Claire can be included, otherwise she'll drive the family crazy with her whining. You'd think every once in a while she wouldn't really care about what her sibs are doing. Especially when it involves a math fair. But then again, maybe I'm biased - I come from a small family, so I can't relate to Claire...and I really hate math!

Back in elementary school, we used to have a math and science fair every year. I think K-3 would do some kind of math project with their whole class, and then fourth graders had to do an experiment and fifth graders had to create an invention. I guess about half the kids in the class would get excited about this stuff, and the other half couldn't care less. But then again, elementary schoolers are almost always more eager to learn than older kids (IMO), so I didn't think the kids' enthusiasm was that unrealistic.
But that every single BSC client would want to be in the fair? That's unrealistic.

But everybody's eager in the BSC... except Sean Addison who is so uneager that he burns books

^ I wonder what he would have burned if he'd been forced to participate in the math-athon.... ;D Did Corrie participate or had they moved by that time? I can see her parents pushing her into that. What about Rosie? Same thing for her. I need to reread this one. Was going to this morning chose Dawn on the Coast (needed the Disney references ;D) instead.

I don't know if corrie participated but the addisons move in best kid ever, I think. I also love dawn on the coast for the disney reference, but can't imagine being so rigid about a disney trip
