I liked that Josh and Claudia had a solid friendship before they starting dating. He seemed very sweet and reliable.

^ I liked that too and agree. Josh reminded me a lot of a good guy friend of mine (who I ended up liking with equally unfavorable results as Claud and Josh's romance because it ended up costing us our friendship..... ) I feel for him a bit, though, because sometimes it seemed like Claudia was using him. I don't think she meant to but just didn't know what she wanted and Josh was kind of "there" and "easy."

Never read this one, what exactly were Haley's lies?

This book always seemed so out of character to me. Haley was always portrayed as such a nice, responsible person, and then all of a sudden she's telling lies? I don't know, it just seemed weird.
For some reason, I always think that she was lying because she was jealous of the attention Matt was receiving (which would have made more sense, I think), but wasn't it because she was having trouble with school? I don't know, just seemed too contrived to me, I suppose.
The subplot with Claudia and Josh was kind of boring to me, too. I don't know what it was about this book, it just really wasn't one of my favorites.

Yes! I think Hayley being so OOC was the main reason why I couldn't get into this book. Who do you guys think might have made a better "little liar?" My pick would be Karen. She's always making up stories, anyway.

^ Ooh, yeah, Karen would have been a good one. Even Marilyn and Carolyn Arnold, or Jenny Prezzioso (though she's a tad young) I can see more than Haley.

oh yeah! I could totally see Karen, Maybe Amanda Delaney also? IDK I would have Liked to see Melody Korman As A liar, Idk why but i never liked her and that would have given me more of a reason to hate her.

I think the Braddocks were lame for not noticing that the problem with Haley was obviously her homework. She's in the fourth grade; I always had math problems in the fourth grade and was getting low marks on tests, which made me anxious and stuff. So if I had been acting agitated and putting off my homework like she was, my mom would totally pick up on that and ask what was wrong or if I needed help. Mrs. Braddock was like oh my, something's gotten into her, we just don't know what to do. How about asking how school is going?

So they had a small subplot going about Claudia's dad's birthday (as part of the Josh subplot)... maybe I missed something, but it seemed like they forgot about it halfway through!
Claudia declines date with Josh, thinking she has to go out with dad. Claudia finds out she is a week early, agrees to celebrate with dad following weekend. Claudia reads Nancy Drew/takes nap and never gets around to letting Josh know she's free. Josh calls and Claudia lies and says her dad got sick so they're celebrating the next week.
Later in the book (I thought the same week) Josh asks her out for Saturday. I am thinking this is a trick question... but she goes out with him! I don't remember seeing any mention of celebrating her dad's birthday.
I dunno, maybe I missed something.

I actually liked this one a lot. I think because the previous 10 or so books had veered so far away from the BSC formula that this one seemed more old school. It should have been called Claudia and the Little Beyotch though. Nice to see Haley finally grew her little rattail mullet out on the cover.
I thought it was funny how Stacey could only have boys in her kitchen, Mary Anne couldn't even have Logan in her house if Richard wasn't there, and this one started with Claudia and her boyfriend in her bedroom with the door closed. I think the Kishis are way more laid back than they are perceived as.

^ did they know she had a boy in her room? it seems pretty out of character for the kishis to allow that.

Haley is a little b*tch. Especially after all the BSC has done for their charges, throwing them parties and taking them special places...

And Mr. (He was still in the picture, right)? and Mrs. Braddocks were wrong for allowing Haley's lies to go on for so long. Of course, that it seemed like they had even a tiny doubt about Claudia's participation in the "problem" was even more outrageous. This was one time were Claud truly did nothing wrong. Well, she could have stepped up earlier and talked to her own parents but as we know in Stoneybrook such things don't occur.
In TSB, Mrs. Kishi rushes up the stairs into her room which it sounded like was next door to Claudia's when Frankie is over. I wonder if anyone knew Logan was in Claudia's room for his first BSC Meeting? I know that is sort of different since he was there for business reasons and at the time was only beginning to be interested in MA but still.

I'm not sure if I liked this book or not, I just found myself not caring about it. I thought Haley was a little brat who needed to be put in her place! The Claudia/Josh sort of breakup - eh didn't care either b/c they never really seemed like a couple to me. Oh well, one book closer to finishing the reread

This book could have been called "Mallory and the Lying Room-mate." Isn't what Alexis did? I know she was much more crazed than Haley but, similar principle. Haley trying to get attention because of Matt-jealousy would have been much more interesting. Maybe she really was having trouble in school and decided if she really didn't care, her parents might finally notice her. Have her ditch a class like Ramona did or how we wished Claud had in "Middle School Drop-out." Have her try to change a grade the way Angela altered MA's age in "Secret Life." Anything but repeatedly lying about Claudia. I still can't believe that her parents were suspicious of C for awhile.
I don't like the subplot. Josh really was a sweet, but very young (younger than 6 grade) sounding boy. I never thought about it before, but it DID seem like Claud was using him. Lol, to poor Mr. Kishi never having a birthday. Other than Sharon, I don't think any of the parents had one, did they?
