I used the search engine and can't believe I didn;t find a thread for this book yet, so I'm starting one. This is one of my favorite BSC books ever. I love reading about all the things the little girls do for the talent part of the pageant, and I must admit this book made me actually try to peel a banana with my feet as a kid. I also didn't know the tune to the Popeye song that Claire sang in the book so whenever I read her singing the song I always imagined it as having the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. ;D Oh, and I always feel bad for Charlotte, since Claudia pretty much forces her to compete and then she ends up running off the stage in tears. As for the Jeff wanting to move back to Cali subplot, I really don't care. I hate Jeff. EDITED to fix the spelling of that first 'Jeff'

This answered my question I was about to ask in another thread about Jeff. I'm glad he moved back as I didn't really care for him in most books. I did feel kind of sorry for Dawn, though, as they seemed really close. I think this was a big reason she went back. I had forgotten about this book (though I know there is a thread hidden somewhere - I'll try to find it and bump it if I get a chance) but it is one of my favorites. The Popeye song (a little girl who I used to know thought my dad was named Popeye for the longest time because her dad jokingly called him this so this part always cracked me up ) and banana peeling are some of my favorite Pike moments. Never tried peeling the banana - mom would have a fit as she hates even the sight of banana peels. Edited to add: I guess there wasn't a thread as I searched through all of the pages. Must have been discussing this book in another thread. That seems to be happening to me a lot lately

I'm surprised there is no thread for this book! I was gonna go search but I trust aln's abilities Even though she doesn't trust mine. lol just kidding. Anyway I should re-read this, it's been a while. I liked the idea of the pageant and seeing the girls get ready, it was cute, but Margo's "talent" is absolutely nauseating.

I'm actually eating a banana as I type this. I peeled it the traditional way, though.
This is still one of my favorite books. I loved how the girls had no real talent to speak of and thought of unusual things to do. Margo's was really odd, but like she said, no one else could do it!
Jessi and Mal's arguments against the pageant sounded like they were in their thirties. Not that I disagreed with them in theory (though I have nothing against pageants; the pageant kids I've known really enjoyed it), but even as a kid I thought it sounded like AMM preaching through them.

This was among my first ten books. I got it along with "The Ghost at Dawn's House" at my school book fair in fourth grade. The Jeff subplot was probably one of my favorites. Not that I hate jeff or anything; it was just a little more engaging than most subplots. I think it really should have been a plot.

Ooh! I really like this book. It's one of my favorites.
What's up with the title, though?? Shouldn't it be "Dawn and Little Miss Stoneybrook"?

And who the hell are the three little girls on the cover supposed to be? Any ideas?

Heh, we discussed that on another thread. I forget which one though....
I really liked the Jeff subplot. And the unusual talents were a riot. I don't remember the audience reaction when Margo comes out, sits down, and starts peeling the banana. Were they silently confused? I'm just snickering at the visual of her doing that...
I think if a thread gets old enough, it "falls" off the board, even though there are eleven pages. 'Cause this book is a classic, I'm sure there was a thread for it. Too bad the search function is so screwy!

And who the hell are the three little girls on the cover supposed to be? Any ideas? I assume they're supposed to be Sabrina Bouvier, Myriah and the second runner-up (Lisa something?)

I love Margo and the banana-peeling + poem recital. I've got a new-cover copy of this book as well as my old-cover copy, and in the letter from Ann at the back, she says she doesn't know if anybody can really peel a banana with their feet. She just made that up.
I bet somebody, somewhere can, though.

I'm scared to think about how Margo came to possess the knowledge that she could peel a banana with her feet.

I told my mom about the banana peeling talent and she was totally grossed out. I would like to see someone try it as it does sound like a real talent - more than just playing an instrument or singing because almost anyone can do that Then I told her what Claire's talent was and she started singing the song, so now it is stuck in my head. I can't imagine how Dawn must have felt - so many bananas and endless nights of what I am experiencing right now ...."I'm Popeye the Sailor Man. Toot Toot. I'm Popeye the Sailor Man." (that is ALL I can remember, too) What was Karen's talent? What about Charlotte? I'll bet Myriah was really good. She seems like a talented kid. I remember that she sang Good Ship Lollypop - I'm having fun picturing that as I absolutely love Shirley Temple and have all of her old movies on the 4 reproduced color DVD sets - including the one that has Good Ship Lollypop on it (Bright Eyes)

Karen's talent was singing "The Wheels On The Bus" ;D And Charlotte recited a passage from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
