At least the sitters realized that the rude comments about Norman's weight were hurting him and tried to make the family see that (I think...it's been ages since I've read that book, can't even remember which one it is). Ethel, on the other hand...even the Baby-Sitters were making snide remarks about her.

What book was Ethel in? I don't remember her. As for this book, was there a minimum age for the pageant? If not, I'm surprised that Jenny P wasn't in it. I can see her mom entering her in things like this as soon as she is able.

Ethel = Winter Vacation. I'm pretty sure there was a minimum age, but I'm not sure what it was. Maybe 5?

The age range was 5-8. Yeah Ethel appeared in the Winter Vacation book and whoever was narrating that particular chapter made a pretty snide comment about how despite the song it didn't prevent Ethel from eating 3 chocolate bars on the way home... Have just checked the book, it was Mary Anne's chapter The rhyme is so evil: Ethel where are you going? Upstairs to take a bath Ethel with legs like tree stumps And a neck like a baboon Ethel got in the bathtub Ethel pulled the plug Oh my goodness! Bless my soul! Ethel can't fit down the hole! And even MA never comments on how mean that is... Ann must really hate overweight people

^ the only thing they make a snide reference to was the fact that Ethel ate three Snickers on the way home. I guess stuffing yourself with junk food is only okay if you're a gorgeous Asian beauty with a fast metabolism!

I have to reread this because I don't remember reading about this in the book (most likely because I skipped the MA chapters in that book because they bored me) but even kind, sweet MA didn't say anything about how mean that was? That sucks. Agree that ANM must hate overweight people. WTF, ANM?

It's just so weird because I don't see any reason for that whole mean rhyme to be included anyway...did they need to fill up a chapter?

Maybe Ann thought it was funny... God that would be awful if that was the reason

This one always give me a nice familiar feeling like most of the early books do. Nostalgia maybe…. As always, I love the Pike girls’ talents and have been singing their annoying songs all day. ;D I can totally relate to the BSC’s competitiveness because I’m a very competitive person. I was okay when showing ponies against my friends and actually (surprisingly ;D) wasn’t competitive but in something like this, I would be extremely competitive. I think that aspect of their personality that is similar is what makes Kristy conflict so much with Dawn and then Abby. I always forget this is the one where Jeff leaves. I thought it was good that Sharon let him leave. I know she is the one who initially uprooted him but many parents would be too selfish to do what was best for their kid because they would want to “keep them.” I did feel for Dawn and Sharon – Jeff too – but was glad he went to CA where he was happier.

Was just reading Genius of Elm Street and wondered if Rosie was in the contest in this one. I can't remember but I can see that as the kind of thing her mom would push her into...

I don't think Rosie was invented yet.

^ That would explain it. ;D Rosie being in this book would have been interesting, though. I can see her mom being like Sabrina's.

Weird...in this book,a girl named Sabrina Bouvier won the Little Miss Stoneybrook pageant. Then in the later books, they mentioned an eighth grade girl named Sabrina Bouvier who always wears a lot of makeup and dates with a lot of boys. So,she grew up TOO fast huh? ;D

That Sabrina thing always annoyed me. The characters are even kinda similar: overly concerned about clothes and makeup, and you just know the little one will be boy-crazy as she gets older.
There's a short fanfic somewhere about the two Sabrinas. It's very funny.
This is the first BSC book I ever read, and I still like it. The pageant plot is very fun, although Myriah the rather Mary Sue kid annoyed me. The Jeff plot was sad. I remember getting teary when Dawn and her mother did.
Didn't like MA in this one. She supposedly hates conflict and all that, but she just jumped straight into the competitiveness as well and didn't tell Dawn what her pageant kid was doing either. I understand it, I just hate that she's made out to be sensitive and thoughtful ALL the time, when she sometimes isn't.
