^ You should see some of the cemeteries in Europe if you want character. I find it strange that not a single one of these kids had trouble getting out of the house so late at night. Yes, I know they concocted the whole story about the sleepover, but you'd think someone would smell a rat. If nothing else, I would expect more police to be out and about on a night like Halloween and that seeing a car sitting outside a cemetery would raise a few suspicions.

^Of course, not one of their parents ever called Elizabeth or Watson to make sure the very late night time was really okay, either. But then, neither E or W question anything themselves either before or (long) after the girls and Charlie return to the mansion. I never did think about police presence, Starrynight but you're right. Although since in Stoneybrook the BSC are often "the police..." It would have been most interesting had they been spotted even by someone living close to the cemetery. I just re-read "A Walk to Remember" and the main male character Landon and his friends often spent time hanging out in a cemetery but that was in 1958. I would think even by Stoneybrook standards, 1987 would have been a different story.

You've got a point there, zoar...Stoneybrook police are too inept to catch counterfeiters and dognappers without the help of middle schoolers, so I wouldn't expect them to be on top of patrolling for trouble on Halloween.

Okay so a weird question - in this one they talk about holding their breaths while driving by the cemetery and the. Jessi says she no longer says rabbit rabbit at the beginning of every month (Wth!) . Any ideas on what that rabbit rabbit was about?
MA and her snark of "I know how to use the library too" when jessi and mal were explaining how to find the witchcraft books made me want to punch her.
I still find it humorous that kristie thinks an evil power master sent the necklace - what in the world is that?
Gotta love how jessi solves Jamie's incurable fear of Halloween with a book. She really is mother Teresa!

wikipedia says "rabbit rabbit" is a british (and therefore popular in new england) superstition, and saying it on the first of the month is supposed to bring good luck or a present during that month. it also lists a whole bunch of variations on how to say it or what to do while saying it. does anybody else do this? thanks to this book, i've been saying it since i was a kid!

Punch her, why? I thought Mal and Jessi were the annoying ones in that scene.

^I remember I heard the "Rabbit Rabbit" thing as a fun fact on Nickelodeon when I was little, and it was the only place I had *ever* heard of that superstition. I think it had to be the very first thing you say on the first of the month, otherwise it wouldn't count. I still do it sometimes out of habit!

I don't think this sends a good message to kids. Chain letters never come true. It's like that clown statue story or that "please don't read this, you will be kissed by the love of your life Friday" - I remember, someone did a chain letter joke proclaiming "If you don't post this, Sideshow Bob will kill you in your sleep" followed by "These threats never come true". So just don't believe them!

^I remember chain letter emails were a big thing when I was in high school. One of my friends was legitimately afraid of them. I didn't have enough friends to ever continue the chains, and I turned out ok.

I can see really young readers getting the wrong message from that aspect of the book, but having the girls believe in the chain letter was one of the instances in the series where they actually seemed like kids. I enjoy that kind of thing, now that I'm reading the series as an adult.

I was at my mom's house this weekend and decided to read this book since we are getting close to Halloween. It had a lot of genuinely funny moments that I hadn't noticed before: MA saying that the seed looked like it was plotting things, saying that she's read enough Stephen King to know better, Logan casually visiting the graveyard because he's down for adventure, etc. That's kind of how I talk in real life when I am joking around, so I liked the tone of this book a lot.
I hated the cat costumes though. Logan is supposed to be a tough tomcat but it sounds like he is just wearing a suit made of fur. It makes me think of Hagrid's dress robes. And they repeatedly mention "headdresses" which makes me think they looked like lions.

I might have liked this a bit more if Cokie had appeared in previous books so she might not be the obvious culprit.

Agreed. Especially considering the parts early in the book where Cokie and Grace are staring daggers at the BSC, I'm surprised nobody said "I can think of someone who hates us enough to do this."
I never thought about this before, but the early books specifically mention that Mary Anne is responsible for getting dinner started before her dad gets home. They talk about heating up a casserole they prepared on the weekend and putting a salad together, so it's actually homemade food and not just boxed/canned stuff. Mustard seed isn't terribly unique or recognizable, but if any baby-sitter were to recognize the mustard seed, I would guess Mary Anne first.
