^ It's understandable that they wouldn't automatically think that someone would send them threatening notes just because they were jealous. That definitely wouldn't be my first thought. I didn't enjoy the "mystery" part of the book, but I did like some of the other scenes. Like Logan and MA going to the dance dressed as cats from Cats. lol. And I liked the scene where Richard explained that the necklace held a mustard seed and there was nothing evil about it. I liked imagining his face as he told MA that his grandmother had one just like it. That was a nice little touch. It was also cute when Logan started to call MA his girlfriend but then they both started blushing. That really felt age appropriate. Oh and about the Charlie thing, maybe he agreed to take the girls to the cemetery because he wanted to see what happened. I can imagine him sitting in the car laughing the whole time, lol.

I hope Charlie could find humor in all the things he had to do and see with these girls over the years. (Or one very, very long year...)

I guess we're just made to believe that Charlie is the nice one who drives Kristy around and Sam is the annoying one who made prank phone calls in the beginning of the series. As for Mallory's extreme dorkiness in the graveyard... all I can do is... The BSC PAYS Charlie to drive some of them places; Charlie doesn't drive them 'around' all over all the time, usually to and from BSC meetings and the BSC is not getting a free ride from Charlie.

Gotta love how Jessi solves Jamie's incurable fear of Halloween with a book. She really is mother Teresa! Sweet! Too bad Princess Diana never met Jessi...Jessi might have helped fearful, timid Diana not be so terrified of Halloween. Sweet Diana, even as an adult, was frightened of Halloween.

This book is hilarious! Am I the only one who thinks MA is written very snarky by AMM here? Was this common in the AMM-penned ones? I don’t remember her character being so catty, though I always thought she was emotionally manipulative. Her deciding to read Beth’s death scene in Little Women just so she could read about someone having a worse day than her - wow! And her withheld snarky comment on wanting to inform Jess and Mal that she too knew how a library worked... who is this girl? Then again, her wanting to ‘die of embarrassment’ just because her dad saw that she had fallen out of her bed.., classic MA. Imagine being that embarrassed around your dad over such a small thing?
I thought the graveyard scene was amazingly well written - you could totally feel the nerves and anticipation and general child-like abandon of the whole endeavour. Agree with those who think it’s nuts that Logan just walked up happily after receiving a call telling him he’d see something amazing if he came to a graveyard at midnight. Did anyone else think romance was well and truly dead when Logan agreed with Grace that there were other girls in SMS he could be looking at, but he would be sticking with MA for now... until one of them effectively caught his attention? What an absolute Romeo. Unclear to me why MA considers this the pinnacle of true love, but perhaps this is as good as it gets at 13. It did make me snort that she then decided the bad luck charm was a symbol of Logan’s undying faithfulness to her.
I can’t believe Morbidda Destiny stiffed the kids with apples for trick o’ treating! I was hoping for eyeballs that may or not be candy, or something along those lines.
I also loved the Pike babysitting scene. Daddy stew sounds both terrifying and revolting. Good work, Byron. Again, I found it odd that MA was borderline critical in her description of Margo as being excessively bossy. It didn’t seem like a MA-type of observation. I could be wrong.
I wonder who did send MA that chain letter... we know from this series that very few of the girls are allowed to have non-BSC friends in life...

I'm very surprised Mallory and Jessi we're allowed to go to Kristy's late night "party" considering they aren't allowed to baby sit at night . There's no way I'd let my 11 year old go to a late night party .
Then again Jessi's parents allowed her to stay the whole weekend on her own with her sister and baby brother . And

It's been a long time since I read this book last, but a party with friends seems safer to me than sitting at night. If it were my child, I would feel a lot more comfortable knowing she's with a bunch of her trustworthy friends versus being alone with unpredictable children. And if it were a slumber party (vs just a regular party where everyone leaves) then I probably wouldn't even bat an eye at the thought.

Me either...slumber parties with a group of trusted friends are one of the safest activities.

I love this one! This is a release of three of their mysteries in one book. Translator tells me the cover says "Our Greatest Chills." It was The Ghost at Dawn's House, Mary Anne's Bad Luck Mystery, and Mallory and the Mystery Diary. The cover is obviously from Mary Anne's book. Everyone looks good! The cemetery looks very wide open though with few places to hide.

That is some blood gushing out of that knee. Her outfit is A+. She looks like that necklace is a bomb.

How is Tigger behind her shoulder in the reflection? Lol. These are kind of fun: Mary Anne’s bad sort Threatening letters for Inge Luck changes, Anne Melanie and the evil Mary Anne and the curse Mary Anne and the haunted pendant Unlucky Mary Anne

Vampire Tigger is funny, but I'm dying at the ghost with the flashlight. Hahaha.
It's the first cover to show the Halloween party costumes and I appreciate that.

This one's a classic. It's very silly too. And I didn't really pick up on this before, but Mary Anne can be SO dramatic. When she ponders what wearing the bad luck charm "or else" means, we get this gem: "Not knowing what that “or else” meant was the only thing that kept me wearing the charm. Or else death? Death and destruction? Death, destruction, and the end of civilization as we know it?" WHAT?
I don't really think Claudia and Mallory's job was the worst one ever. It's pretty bad, but if burnt dinner and a bird sneaking inside are the worst, I'd say they're lucky. I can't believe that Mary Anne thinks it's worse than when Jenny went to the hospital or when Buddy disappeared.
I don't know why, but I love the magazine cutout letters and how much they scare the club. I guess it's just nostalgia. As a kid I thought they were so, so creepy as well. Now I wonder how long it took to make them.
Did anyone ever get chain letters? I never did... I don't even recall getting a chain e-mail. The closest thing I've seen are those text wall quotes you find on social media when at the end they say, "Repost this if you want your crush to ask you out" or "Copy and paste this or you or someone you know will die in 30 days." Hopefully the BSC never come across those.
I love them going out to the graveyard at night (I thought it was SO exciting when I was younger). I do wonder why Charlie is down for that, though, lol. Him always being available to drive them around never stood out to me as a kid, but it's definitely strange now. Also, it's so not okay for 13 year olds to hang out in a graveyard around midnight. I know it's Stoneybrook and the 80s and all, but still! Did Cokie, Grace, their friends, and Logan all sneak out? Did they lie about where they were going? Either way, love that scene.
Kristy was annoying in this book (just felt over-the-top with her bossiness. Foreshadowing for #22?), but I did like her plan to scare Cokie and their friends.
Definitely one of the most nostalgic books for me. I probably read this one a couple dozen times.
