Dawn summed it up: “you went from LL Bean to Cover Girl overnight.” It SEEMED that way, but in reality, Mary Anne was no 'cover girl'; she was the same sweet Mary Anne...and the other girls later did feel bad about the way they teased her.

The subplot was meh, but I thought the father-daughter day was adorable. The other members were so petty I was like grrrr...especially thought Dawn needed to be smacked.

The BSC were borderline abusive about appearances and controlling other peoples bodies at times, imo. Dawn's probably the worst in that she keeps doing it right into California Diaries (she 'bans' Sunny from getting a navel piercing, and is disgusted when she disobeys. Maggie is also hilarious there, she's like 'it's one thing to wear green rat tails in your hair, but quite another to pierce more than two holes apiece in your ear'. Wtf is the difference?) but Mary Anne did the same thing to her in Dawn's Big Date. They really needed to learn some boundaries, I wouldn't exert that much control over a small childs appearance as they seem to want over each other. They seemed to literally expect their friends to seek permission before doing anything.

Dawn was really rude in this one. And she's the worst kind of vegetarian . She actually said ew to the Chinese food and it was just so rude .
Every single member was jealous . That's all it was . Stacey and Claudia were the worst because MA was more sophisticated then them. And why do they have to do everything together ?
Dawn was simply missing her dad and taking it on MA because she's close to her dad .

I just reread this book, and it jumped out at me that Richard and MA brought home Chinese food without calling home first. They all eat as soon as they get home (which makes sense, because the food is still hot), but that means it was probably already dinner time. What were Dawn and Sharon planning to do for dinner? It sounded like they hadn't even begun prepping anything else. I tend to plan my meals days in advance so my take on this may be off-base. Who cares ? They're vegetarians and they eat separate meals .

I've convinced myself that Mary Anne's makeover was inspired by Olympic figure skating champion Dorothy Hamill.

I've convinced myself that Mary Anne's makeover was inspired by Olympic figure skating champion Dorothy Hamill. Her hair did look a bit like Dorothy Hamill's. I loved it. I loved how her dark bangs/fringe brought out her huge brown eyes.

Did Hamill’s popularity coincide with this book?
It was such a surprise to me when this book came out…like whoa Mary Anne chopped all her hair off I NEED A MINUTE.

Did Hamill’s popularity coincide with this book. Not really...Dorothy was popular in the late 1970s and this book came out in the 1990s. I don't think Mary Anne's hair was meant to look like Dorothy's. I knew several girls and women with hair like Mary Anne's and it wasn't after a 1970s hair trend. Thinking back, Dorothy had her hair appear thicker on the sides and more feathered while Mary Anne had a more symmetrical, all-even shape, more like a rounded bob and no feathers, just a straight, simple style. It was such a surprise to me when this book came out...like whoa Mary Anne chopped all her hair off I NEED A MINUTE. To me it wasn't a real surprise...I remember thinking how cute it was. I loved how her bangs drew attention to her huge slightly almond-shaped deep brown eyes.

Do you feel the same way about Claudia’s dark almond shaped eyes?

Does anyone remember what the subplot was in this one? I feel like it’s the Carolyn Arnold time travel plot but I could be wrong.,

Do you feel the same way about Claudia’s dark almond shaped eyes? Claudia has nice eyes also...in fact, before I started reading the BSC books and when I just looked at the covers, I thought Mary Anne was part Asian. In fact, I still suspect Mary Anne may be part Asian and not know it. I remember in one book, Mary Anne mentions that she has Russian in her ethnic background. Wouldn't that be intriguing if Mary Anne traced her roots and found out that her Russian ethnic background actually does have Asian there after all? Does anyone remember what the subplot was in this one? I feel like it’s the Carolyn Arnold time travel plot but I could be wrong. It was. Mary Anne remembers a time in her own childhood when she fancied a travel time plot in front of friends and ended up so humiliated that she cried. So, she helped Carolyn out with her time travel fancy.

Funny story… I have similar dark almond shaped eyes… An Indian boy in elementary school once asked me why I had “Chinese eyes”? I didn’t know what to say to him. Hurt, I went home and told my family. My dad said to go back and tell him, “why do you have Indian eyes?” Yeah, my dad was not PC; it was the 90s and I haven’t thought of that story in yearrrrrs. Lol. That boy and I became academic rivals, for real.
