I really enjoyed this one and thought Peter L was actually a good pick because the plot is a bit... ridiculous. But it somehow works.
I love the food descriptions (I can TASTE the Mexican food I s2g). There is a ton of delicious-sounding food in this book. I don't eat bacon, but I wasn't French toast! Yum. MA never struck me as a foodie, but she definitely seems like a comfort food kind of person (also present in mystery #5 with fried chicken and biscuits), which is cool. I'm hungry.
I loved the shopping trip with her dad. That night be one of my favorite moments in the series. They seem so close and Richard is both awkward but supportive of her new look. It's so cool and I wish there were more moments like this. He's definitely one of my favorite BSC parents. I think that his deal with MA paying for half the clothes and accessories seems fair actually. I don't know what Dawn and Sharon were whining about lol. I liked the casual clothes MA got, but I have to say the dress sounds ugly. I'm sorry, without the sleeves it would be cute, but yeah. I don't care much for dresses anyway and just don't find them very interesting at all. I do think Dawn's sounds really nice, though.
On re-read, I REALLY hate Dawn's behavior in this book. Her reasons for being so cold to Mary Anne are so weak. Really, they should consult each other before making any change? Dawn even says that she'd consult Mary Anne if she decided to eat steak. Wtf? That's ridiculous. I would NEVER expect that out of my friends, even back then.
My best friend in 9th grade actually decided to dye her hair blonde, and... not to sound mean, but it did NOT work. But you know what? I didn't care at all! It just wasn't a big deal. She didn't "consult" me either. I really don't understand Dawn's perspective. The only thing I can see is that she's getting back at Mary Anne a bit for how she was treated in Big Date, but imo, MA's treatment in this book was far worse. Her jealousy at MA's relationship with Richard does kind of explain it more, but I still think her reaction was way OTT.
Their fight later in the book is iconic. "Boy haircut and clown makeup" and "go choke on an alfalfa sprout." Lmao!
Tbh, I actually understand Kristy's perspective a little more in this re-read. For her, it didn't seem to be about the makeover at all (that would be very OOC, Kristy doesn't care about that stuff). It's because she might have felt abandoned by MA because she pushed her friendship aside again. Not saying Kristy was right, I think MA was in the right, but I can understand her POV a little more. Claudia and Stacey, though... eff off. It's like any time another club member decides to be more trendy, they feel threatened or something. Being cool and sophisticated is THEIR DOMAIN. At least that's how their attitude comes across.
This fine apparently went on for weeks, which is ridiculous. Like I said, I understand Kristy's POV, but at that point, get over it! Omg. I'm not sure I'd give the BSC girls another chance after this.
The subplot sort of dragged, even though I am in fact a Back to the Future fan. Since when was Jessi into sci-fi? I guess that does make her more interesting, but for some reason I can't really see it. Does this come up again? Anyway, yeah, it could've been an interesting subplot, but it was just very repetitive. Luckily, the rest of the book was really interesting.
AMM puts in a note at the end that she dresses a lot like Kristy. I like this detail for some reason.
