I've always loved this book, but hated Mary Anne's actual makeover. Well, the haircut anyway. She looks so terrible! I remember looking at the cover as a kid and wondering if that was what "cool" hair looked like. I love the descriptions of the clothes that she buys though, and her shopping trip with Richard is definitely one of my favorite moments in the series.

^ I agree about the haircut. For the most part, she looked pretty bad on the covers after this book. In regards to Sharon, a few people have said they didn't like how she reacted, but she actually had a good reaction, complimenting MA. The only slight indication she was displeased was when she frowned slightly at how much they spent, which, considering she hadn't been consulted, sounded fair enough to me. If she had of done that to dawn, Richard would prolly have gone off his rocker!

OMG, I still cannot get over how mean the BSC was to MA in this book, such bitches! I can't believe they made her feel like crap all because *gasp* she wanted to change her image. I mean, what was the big deal? No one ever freaked out when Stacey permed her hair or Claudia did something crazy (well more crazy than normal ) to her wardrobe, but when it came to MA, they got all ape about it. Putting my rant aside, I actually had a haircut similar to MA's in the 1st grade before I decided to grow it out to where it is now.

I didn't care for Mary Anne's haircut just cause I don't like short hair on girls really, but she still looked cute, I think she, overall, looked the best on BSC covers.

^ Agree about not liking short hair, though I can't see some girls with long hair ;D (my mom has had short hair since kindergarten and she would look strange with long hair) The haircut does look nice on MA but for some reason, I would always rather picture her like she looks on some of the earlier covers with the long hair - MA and Secret in the Attic, 2 Many Babies, and MA vs. Logan being my favorites ;D

The short hair always made MA look horrible on the illustrations inside the Super Specials. That one with her and Logan carrying the penguin immediately comes to mind ;D

^ Was that in Sea City? I kind of remember that one but never usually look at the illustrations because some of them are so bad and I would prefer to picture the girls however I want, which is sometimes not at all how they are shown. MA's short hair - looking good or bad - is an example.

Although I prefer having long hair, short hair can look really nice on some girls, depending on how it's cut. Mary Anne could have gotten layered short hair and looked really cool but... she got it cut into a bowl cut But was that style fashionable when it was written? The answer to why the BSC were bitches to Mary Anne? As my mum says, they were simply jealous. Claudia and Stacey were jealous because now they are not the "most sophisticated looking kids at SMS," Kristy was jealous because MA had become much more confident on account of her new style, whilst Dawn was just jealous full stop, angry that MA went shopping with her Dad instead of her.

MA saw the bowl cut style in a current fashion magazine, but I dunno if they were actually in style at the time. I think this book was written in '93?

^ Haha on Wikipedia I looked up 90s Fashion and this is what it said about the bowl cut - The bowl cut became popular with teenage and pre-teen boys in 1991.Maybe Dawn did have a point then

MA's short hair - looking good or bad - is an example. Yeah, that was Sea City. I look at the pictures for a laugh, but I don't picture them the way they're shown. MA and Logan looked more like a lesbian couple in this picture ;D Personally, I think they just wanted MA's hair short so she could be the token "short-haired" one for girls to relate to. Everyone else in the BSC had long hair and MA seemed like the most likely contender for short hair. Some people (not me, though) would say Kristy because she was the "tomboyish" one, but IMO short hair needs a LOT more maintenance than long hair.

I wouldn't describe MAs haircut as a "bowl" cut at all. It looked like it was layered in the back. And I actually like the pic of her and Logan in Sea City! I think they look cute!

I never pictured a bowl cut, either, even though that's how it was pictured on most of the covers after this one. It looks like a freaking hat on some of them, probably because the girl who modeled for those pictures had to wear a wig!!!
