Mary Anne herself actually describes the haircut as a type of bowl cut.

Actually, I myself don't mind Mary Anne's haircut. In my opinion, she's the best looking one on most of the covers. She looks particularly pretty on "The Fire at Mary Anne's House." I guess the cut looks better in some pictures than others.

They used the short hair for one cover, which is Mary Anne's Makeover. After this, Mary Anne has a much nicer chin-length hairstyle. Someone must have discovered that the butchcut wasn't a good look for MA...

Truthfully, I never look much at the illustrations and don't ever even picture MA as having short hair so I wouldn't know the difference. About this book, though, I don't remember what MA's reasons were for the makeover. Did she just want a change? Was this during the time when her and Logan were separated? I can't remember.

MA had already been separated from Logan; in this book they were already back together again. If I remember correctly, after seeing the haircut in a magazine she just decided to try a new look because the prospect of short hair after having had long hair all her life excited her. She wanted to look her best as part of her New Year's resolution. I thought the "old Mary Anne" was just fine, but she had every right to decide on a change. I’m glad that she was happy with her new look, and I think she looks great. Her “friends” should have been a lot more supportive of her decision. But, they were just being typical jealous junior high girls, I guess I actually enjoyed the Carolyn subplot. Maybe this is because I've always wanted to travel in time and could just picture myself being really into Carolyn's time machine project at that age

^ This was the time machine one? I actually think that was my least favorite (or one of them at least) Arnold twin subplots, but that is probably because I've never been into stuff like that so can't relate. I can see how someone else might really like it, though, and parts were funny from what I remember. Didn't Jenny P come to use the time machine? I might have to reread this one soon because thinking about it, I actually might like the subplot more than I thought.

I never picture Mary Anne as having short hair either. I wouldn't be mean to her about her makeover like the BSC was, but I do prefer to pretend it never happened. I just always picture her looking like she does on the cover of MA and the Secret in the Attic.

^ That's exactly what I do, hitzpink ;D I think that might be another reason I don't read this one much (other than that I find it kind of boring) - I would prefer not even considering the makeover. I do like how Richard takes her to the mall, though.

I need to re-read this one, it's a shame how quickly you forget the details. Some of the earlier books that I owned as a kid, I could almost recite word-for-word, but this one was released when my "original" BSC interest was fading From what I recall, the BSC really were horrible to MA. But unfortunately, that's a pretty realistic response from 13 yr olds, although not in BSC-land where they're more like mini-adults.

I love the shopping trip, too!
I also like when the twins are collecting stuff for the time machine and finding things like an old shower curtain, toy telephone, hands from a broken clock, etc. It sounded like fun! Too bad Carolyn got carried away.
Is this the one that Mary Anne tells Dawn to go "choke on an alfalfa sprout?" Snap!

^ I had forgotten that quote but it's great. ;D MA can be quite witty for being so "sensitive" (though Dawn definitely deserved it in this one. ;D)

Unless sensitive just means flinging yourself on the bed crying over a missed phone call or something, which I guess it does. But this is the girl who told Dawn to "get out of her life, forever" because of a forgotten phone message
