Yeah, it's like another Welsh name, Carys, which most people in America would pronounce like "paris," when it is more "ca-riss" or "cah-riss."

Kristy says she looks 'excellent', I say she looks like a clown. This made me LOL. I really liked this book more than I remembered, in fact, I had dreaded reading it! But yeah, the softball stuff was brearable, and it was fun seeing Kristy doing something 'bad', instead of Stacey. Funny how no one even came down on her for it?

i agree kylie -- in other books kristy is so tough on the other girls (being strict about meeting times, in perfect boy where she tells claudia that she made a really dumb mistake, etc) but for some reason nobody tells kristy off for what she did. they take so much grief from her that i'm surprised how easy going they were.

I think I would have liked the ending better and more realistic to Kristy's character had she told Coach Wu what happened. Even if nothing happened, I am unsure how Kristy thought she would make sure no more hazing went on from the team without saying something to anyone.
I did enjoy the Stacey/Claudia coaching and loved the outfits! I am like some of you and I thought the title of the book wasn't really right. I loved when Kristy gets ticked off at Karen and yells at her. Finally someone tells her what i always think.....shut up and give me five minutes!!!!!!!!!!!

^I agree. If nothing else, Kristy should have at least told Coach Wu about the hazing in general (even if she didn't want to mention the shed). The best part of this book was when Kristy (finally) gets fed up with Karen, too bad it didn't last or happen much again.

do you guys think kristy would have hazed the new players the next season if she hadn't been demoted to second string? it's hard for me to figure out because not telling the coach about the hazing seems so out of character for her, almost like she's okay with it. obviously i know she isn't okay with it, but if she can ignore it once, why not twice? it's a sad thought for me.

I don't think Kristy would've hazed the new players if she remained first string. It seems OOC for her.

^I would hope she wouldn't. If she had, I certainly would lose all respect for her. It might have been interesting to read about her being in that predicament. Say she is a main player on the team but maybe one of the other hazers isn't. That person could be "jealous" and threaten to "tell on Kristy" and/or make things miserable for her should she not participate. This entire book was OOC for Kristy, imo. I did like she (finally) was interested in joining the SMS softball team; too bad that didn't go well for her and we practically never heard of it again. If she had continued, there might have come a day when she had less time for the BSC!

I don't think she would try to haze the new people but then again I didn't think she would paint the shed!!!

I would hope she'd see a difference; not that either is "right" but you know. ITA about being very surprised that she went through with painting the shed.

I think if Kristy were going to object to hazing, it would have happened the first time. After she's been through it, she's more likely to rationalize it with something like "if I did it, they should have to" or "I did it and I'm fine now, what could go wrong?" That's why hazing is so pervasive once one class goes through it; it sucks when you're being hazed but afterward there's nowhere to go up (I'm pretty sure this is even acknowledged in the book, doesn't Kristy mention the exhilaration/euphoria she feels after painting the shed?) and it's really easy to forget how much you wished it wasn't happening when you're on the other side of the equation.

I just noticed the typo in the title of this thread. Now I'm picturing all the bad things my cats could witness me doing. Good thing they aren't police officers.

First of all, what kind of name is Bea Foster? Who names their kid that, even during the 80s or whatever. It reminds me of Bea Arthur (whom I love). Maybe she was named after a relative or something? Either way, I got the impression that Nola Thacker was trying to say that she was a sturdy, dykey-built girl though her name.
(I'm going to finish reading this and post more later in a modify).

Kate Spade has a six or seven year old daughter named Frances Beatrix, called Bea. Wonder if she is "dykey."

Frances Beatrix reminds me of a modern day name where the parents are trying to be "trendy" by jazzing up an older name (not that there's anything wrong with it). Frances Beatrix sounds like a goody two-shoes name.
