I adored this book! I got it when I was 8, as a gift for when my brother was born. Not as much a gift as a 'read this when I'm giving birth' distraction from mum. So i was reading this all day, while mum had my brother. So it has a sentimental value for me!

And I used to spend time designing my own board games, so I liked the description of Mary Anne's homemade game. A couple of friends and I once made a digestive system board game for a school project. Or, as Claudia would say, "divestive system."

^ I can definitely understand that. How old were you? I have a lot of books that I like mainly for sentimental value as I am not sure why else I really like them ;D This one is strange for me. I read it a few months ago and loved it but when I reread a few weeks ago, I didn't care for it nearly as much. It must just depend on the mood I am in because that affects my impression of MA. The last time I reread, I didn't like her nearly as much. Dawn, either, and I noticed a lot more fighting. I could totally predict the problems that took place in Wicked Stepsister.

I was 8 Yeah, sometimes you have to be in the right mood to read a book, or a sitter i think. You're right, it is so very predictable.

I really hate how MA felt like she couldn't talk CASUALLY around her own dad. "Yeah, I mean yes....sorry...." -- way to build MA's confidence, Richard. No wonder she was so self conscious all the time.

It cracks me up how scared Dawn looks on this cover, like she expects the bouquet to explode or something.

Last night, this sentence jumped out at me regarding Mary Anne's brief fight with Dawn over Sharon's birthday gift. This comes after Dawn has "shot down" all of MA's ideas on what to get Sharon. Personally, I think it was very nice of MA to be considering a gift for Sharon in the first place. At this point, neither of them knew of the impending marriage. Anyway, below is MA ready to do battle. On Page 48: I jumped off the bed and faced Dawn with my fists clenched. This is reminiscent of Claudia raising her hand to Janine in #7, but more graphic and suggestive. Maybe it's just me or because I think MA was dispicable in her treatment toward her so called bff Kristy once Dawn came along and moreso after the marriage, but I didn't think her note to K was that wonderfully nice at all. The idea, yes, the wording not so much. I got the impression that yes while it was acknolwedging K has a long time friend of MA's, the message primarily was saying "goodbye" to K. The whole Sharon Schafer, etc thing was I never got why the divorced BSC mothers held onto their exes surnames and for so long. Do have to give Ann "credit" for not saying he/she in her description of how to play Sardines though. From page 54: When a seeker finds the hider, he doesn't just win that round of the game,he hides with him.

I can't believe the thread for this book is so short! This book is one of my favorites. And it's one of the most snarked on the LJ community. I always loved the part where Dawn and MA have all these plans for a huge wedding that would cost tons of money and they get shot down by Sharon and Richard telling them they weren't even planning to have one. It was nice of them to compromise on it for the girls.

this is one of those books that i've had ever since i can remember, and the plot is so familiar to me. during the whole wedding planning scene, either dawn or MA is talking about how the ushers need grey striped bowties, and how handsome grey is. so i definitely owe my love of grey, and my love of bowties, to this book :]
i love how intimate the schafer/spier wedding is compared to the thomas/brewer wedding. but i do think it's funny how kristy's mom's wedding matches kristy's personality (since she got a chance to take charge of the kids, be part of the party and stand in front of everyone, etc) while MA's dad's wedding matches MA's personality (close, quiet, sentimental, etc).

I have always found the subplot about the Arnold twins to be just as entertaining as the main plot. I love reading about the redecorated bedrooms. When I was a kid, I was so jealous that they both got new rooms and a total room makeover. I wanted a bedroom like Carolyn's, even though I wasn't a "cat person."
I also loved reading about the kids in the neighborhood playing Sardines together. I used to wish I could just walk over to a friend's house like that, but it wasn't possible where I grew up.

This subplot was totally great, I agree. Interior decorating: much more interesting than the Schafer/Spier wedding.

I've have to go back and read what Carolyn's room looked like again; I didn't use to pay it much attention aside from the fact that it was blue, but she had a cat pillow and cat trash can, right? Awesome.

I think she also had a new shaggy blue rug and blue-and-white striped wallpaper. The trash can even had ears and a tail, which is totally cool.
