I reread and loved this one as always. I really like the carnival, the kids, and especially the Pikes’ celebration. I feel for Mallory with having to basically put everything on hold and can understand why she was feeling bad. Not that she went about things in the right way with the BSC but understandable. I also liked how Jessi and Claudia and the other girls caught on right away and supported her. My favorite thing this time was reading about the kids. Claire and Margo were especially adorable. ;D I also loved the “Mallory is Sick” play they put on. ;D

I liked when Mal was trying to name some famous nurses, and one of the nurses she thought of was "Hot Lips Hoolihan" from M*A*S*H*.

Especially when she stated, "I told you I've been watching too much TV," or something like that ;D. Also liked the part where she was so thrilled to get out of the house to see the doctor that she was pointing out everything she liked and thought was cute (like the pumpkins in the store window ;D).

Silly Mallory, thinking she's going to go on with her school day and sitting job when she's breaking out in a sweat just from getting dressed in the morning. I felt bad for her because I know how it feels to think you've got to force yourself to do things even when you don't feel well. Sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that yes, it's okay to be sick and no, the world will not stop turning if I have to miss work or other obligations due to illness.
The carnival idea was cute; I just wish that we didn't have to hear about it secondhand.
A bit of a drama-queen moment when the Pikes tell Mallory no BSC until she gets well. I definitely rolled my eyes at that.

^ I don't think it was so bad that Mal got upset about missing out on the BSC/ She's already feeling so crummy that she can barely do anything, her friends have been giving her a bad time about being so sick, and she's bascially having to give up her entire life for an unknown amount of time until the mono is gone. I don't blame her for losing it a little!

It looks like I'm one of the few people that actually like this book. It would have been interesting had any other BSC member been stricken with mono. I don't wish it on Mal or any of them, please know that. I just mean the storyline might have been expanded if say MA, BSC secretary needed a BSC break for a long time. Unlike in the previous book, at least this time, Mrs. Pike was on top of taking Mal to the doctor. My only other "complaint" is I would have preferred hearing about the carnival "live." I still have some doubts about how something like that would work out--in this one it really came across as though all the residents loved everything about the party. Good for them; if true, just sort of questionable. I think instead of trying to get herself kicked out of the BSC (though I understood and for once a member acted their age), maybe she should have attempted to find a new member? I just don't get (same with the Dawn saga) why either D or M would have to be permanately replaced, in a negative way. The BSC needed the help and could better serve their clients, maybe even find new ones, with another member or two--even if they were associates or as needed. I loved reading about the Pikes Thanksgiving. It showed them all together as a happy family.

^ ITA about replacing mallory. even though they meant well ("we could never replace you!") it was probably really sucky to feel that your contribution wasn't really very big. poor mallory already felt like crap and then they dropped that on her. you are right about finding a permanent new sitter -- think how many new clients and jobs and projects that would have allowed for. even if it's crowded in claudia's room, it's only for half an hour. and honestly, having shannon as alternate instead of associate was so stupid. they aren't adding any sitters. the only difference is that she is in the room during the meeting instead of across town.

^Maybe they thought her physical presence automatically meant she'd take regular, a job or two a weeks work? ITA, that doesn't change anything to me, since Shannon was already doing that from her house. Lol, I just thought of this: We know how it even costs money in Stoneybrook for Claudia to call the Perkinses for example, who live across the street. I'd gather there'd be a bigger charge to call Shannon's house from Bradford Court. So maybe that was the hidden difference?

They weren't adding a sitter, but they were adding availability. Shannon was committing more of her schedule to the club. As an associate member she may have only volunteered her time once every other week. It wouldn't really be fair for her to suddenly be profiting from the club with steady work without having to participate in the club duties (notebook, dues, even just the discussions they had during meetings, etc).

that's true about the notebook and dues and everything. i never looked at it that way. but i guess what bothers me about it is that if she is so pressed for time, she could be spending that extra time sitting instead of coming to meetings. (i know nobody ever needs a sitter at 5:30 but still :] )

Is it wrong that I was jealous of Mal taking naps and not having to work etc....It's really terrible I know but man I could use a nap. I am so exhausted all the time I was reading this and thinking...maybe this is what's wrong with me!
I did like the senior subplot!

When I read this first I thought it was okay, it wasn't one of my favourites but I didn't dislike it either. Then both my friend and boyfriend got mono (at different times), and my first thought was "like Mallory". They both had a hard time with it, particularly my friend who got it twice, so after that I sympathised with Mallory a lot more.

^I'm sorry your friend had mono twice, yuck. Not that "once" would be a picnic but you know.
I meant to ask before if anyone remembers when Mal returned to school? I know she comes back to the BSC at the very end of Mary Anne and Miss Priss. She's in school during the book prior, MA and the Library Mystery. I was trying to figure out how long she was stuck at home.
