Four months is practically a whole semester. I don't think she was out that long, but that might have been funny. She could have been held back while Jessi chilled with Claudia in 7th grade for awhile.

In "Mary Anne and Miss Priss," it says at the top of page 6
^I'll check later to be sure, but I know the previous book, "Mary Anne and the Library Mystery" took place in February. Mal was in school then. I'm thinking she was out of school all of December and then whatever weeks in January SMS was open. She comes back to the BSC at the end of "Miss Priss," probably mid March.

I think I came up with 4 months, cause for each book that came out between the Mallory one and when she came back, it was 4 though I may have miscounted

I'm thankful Mal never had a recurrence. What is sort of odd is that in "Stacey and the Mystery at the Mall," the book right after "MA and Miss Priss," Mal is allowed without question (that we saw) to "work" at the mall. I know Dr. Dellenkamp said there was no reason for Mal not to resume her activities. I just thought given the severity and length of Mal's mono that could have been even a teeny conversation.

The poor girl can't catch a break, she's always sick. Who gets chicken pox twice? It was either German Measles the first time...or should have been shingles the second time though I think she's too young for that

I felt sorry for Mallory for getting mono. It just seems like someone or something has it in for her. I liked how Claire, Margo and Nicky made a play for Mallory so that she would feel better. I thought that it was ridiculous that Mrs. Pike would ask Mallory to watch Claire and Margo. Why couldn't she just have brought them along with the older siblings that were going with them?
I liked the cover and that the scene happened in the book. Not surprisingly, Mallory looks miserable but I thought that Margo and Claire looked cute. I think it would've been interesting if Kristy or Mary Anne got mono because I would like to have seen their reactions about people thinking that they kissed their boyfriends or how the club was coming along without them for several books.

^One of the girls in Fabulous Five (the flirty "Stacey" one) got mono and got made fun of for getting "the kissing disease". IIRC one of her teachers got on the school PA system and informed the entire school about how/why people really get mono. That would be more humiliating than being teased, lol.

This is my favorite book to read. I forgot all about the sub-plot. Until, I re-read this pass week.
I like it, when BSC did the the gift baskets for the Manor residents.

When I was a kid, I always thought this book was rare because it was one of the few (maybe 1 or 2) books that I personally didn't own. They really liked to experiment with bold colour choices at this point in the series...
I like how this book crosses over two holidays: Hallowe'en and Thanksgiving.
Do you think Scholastic was trying to make a series arch or something? Like, Dawn moves to California and Mallory gets mono and is out of the club... what are the babysitters ever going to do!?

I started to re-read this last night in the hope that Claudia's "Miracul" Cure would rub off on me through the pages. Maybe in order for it to work, I first have to reach that place in the book. Anyway, near the beginning, Mal and Nicky catch Vanessa practicing waving in front of Mrs. Pike's mirror. Mal tells us Vanessa is seated on the dresser looking into the mirror. How is that possible? When I picture a bedroom dresser, it's against a wall with the mirror above it. Unless Vanessa either pulled out the heavy dresser (which I doubt) or was only semi perched on top, this doesn't work. Does it?
The nurse scene with Claire and Margo was cute. Did it seem to anyone else that was the reason they were left at home? It sounded like both Mr. and Mrs. Pike took the other 5 kids shopping. Surely they could have included Claire and Margo or made other plans for them.

^ I read the scene in which Vanessa was waving into the mirror but I pictured her perched on the side of the dresser looking into the mirror (which was either attached to the dresser or hanging on the wall). I guess she doesn't need to pull the dresser out, she can just perch on the side with her feet dangling down the front.
Claire looks cute on the cover but what happened to Margo? She looks like she's going to get a serious case of the uni-brow when she gets older.
I can't help but wonder what the book would have been like if Mal didn't get mono and her entire family went to NYC for Thanksgiving ...

^ I don't think it would have been called "Get Well Soon, Mallory" for one.

^That's probably how she was sitting on it. The description or maybe how I read it made it sound otherwise. I still think it should have been another sitter to get mono. I don't wish that or any ill on any of them but poor Mal, again. Last night I was thinking how the storyline might have differed had mono struck any other sitter. Kristy: It could have been a better tie in to "Kristy for President" but also (more importantly) to her un-settled feelings about Patrick and/or her declining friendship with MA. She could have (similar to Mal) been feeling dragged out for awhile as she zipped through school making all A's and life in general. She just needs some space and time off. That would be very hard for the BSC to initially accept. I think it could be "great" for Kristy, the break I mean not the mono. Claudia: Could open up fuller "story" of her school struggles along with acceptance in/of her family. Yes, her gorging on candy and junk food would probably be a big part of things. I could totally see her defiantly eating whatever treat she believed to be the most unealthy in front of her parents as way of protest. Like, I've been trying to eat better (maybe she has), not helping, so let me enjoy this in peace type of scenario. Such a scene could have been endearing to the whole Kishi family because at long last there'd be "live" conversation about food choices and their family in general. Mary Anne, no question the "easiest" substitute soon after Richard and Sharon's marriage. I still would love to read about her true feelings during this time. I still am in Logan's court in believing early on he seemed to be blamed for MA's turmoil. It was an "easy" answer. If MA had mono, her overall depression/working through changes couldn't have been pushed aside as easily. Maybe this would also allow for an honest convo between her and Kristy. I do realize from a BSC standpoint, not having MA as secretary might have been difficult. Stacey, well if she was stricken with mono, especially back in the late 80's that could have been a disaster (diabetes-wise). For that reason, in my mind, she really doesn't "qualify." Unless, it wasn't all that serious. "Time" wise would either be right after she and Maureen move back to CT or during the "Bad Girl" arc. Give Stacey some true time to herself. Dawn, might explain some of her own passive aggressiveness or simmering anger. She always seemed (at heart) the least happy out of any of them, except for maybe MA, having her to step back might make a difference. No matter where she got sick, I'd hope the other parent (who she wasn't living with at the time) would make an appearance. I think she was more crushed by her parents remarriages than Stacey was of her Dad's. (Dawn's hasty change of heart toward Carol and plane hopping, also lack trying to get to know Richard). Jessi, well she's just an 11 year old super ballerina who never, ever needs a baby-sitter. I'll think about the others later. What do you guys think?
