^It wasn't a problem for me either, Oldhickory. When I was able to eat cookies, I could be quite the cookie monster. Candykane, that is an interesting tip about the bread. I wish I had known that years ago.

This one again proves my point about why they continue to advertise. The girls keep complaining they are missing members and they have so many sitting jobs, but then in the end kristy brings over their new advertising flyer to show mal. Wtf!!!! Why are you advertising??? You already have enough business...please stop!

^I just thought of something else, for the most part the girls handed out or mailed flyers to the same clients. Unless the Newtons or Papadakises suddenly came into contact with new families, the ads wouldn't do much good anyway. At least the only time they went beyond that to our knowledge anyway was in #3 and also at the PTA meeting in #10. Yes, I know they had a booth at the "Health Fair," but honestly that sounded so boring...hard to "count" it.

It could still be useful for the regular clients to have all the club info written down in a formal manner. I suppose they would eventually lose the old flyers, spill something on them, etc. I don't know. I'm the type of person who grabs the same take out menu that I already have three copies of at home, so I can see why it could be useful to some of the families.

I just remembered how, in the BSC movie, Cokie took a lot of the flyers down to spite the BSC. "I just found a few of these, you know, flyinggg around Main Street."

Mallory has old lady pajamas. "Practical, yet feminine," is not a thing that preteens should be looking for in sleepwear. Ha ha, that made me laugh! I will never tire of Ann's love of such old-fashioned and old-ladyish details, like "practical yet feminine" flannel pajamas with a lace collar. References like these are in so many of the books, including the ghostwritten ones, which makes me picture Ann giving the writers detailed information about Mal's "stylish" pajamas, because it's that important to her.

^ Bwahahaha! Now I got a picture of Mal doing all of Ann's favourite things: wearing a practical yet feminine nightgown watching I Love Lucy at a 50s diner while drinking an egg-cream and petting a cat.

Strange coincidence tonight! A few posts up, some of you were talking about how keeping a slice of bread with cookies keeps the cookies moist, a tip I wasn't familiar with previously. Then tonight I was with some friends, and one of them brought some homemade cookies with a slice of bread in the bag. I was excited.

I just finished Chapter 4, and I think this chapter is really cute. Stacey and Charlotte go downtown wearing matching berets! (Sadly, Charlotte's is described as "a cranberry-colored felt beret" rather than a raspberry beret, which would have been awesome. Especially for Stace/Char slash fans.) They go to Polly's Fine Candy, which echoes The Truth About Stacey, only this is the new and improved Charlotte who has friends and isn't so shy anymore. The chocolate Mayflower display they look at sounds incredible, and the ridiculous Thanksgiving play with the turkey dance that Charlotte tells Stacey about sounds adorable.

Okay, so I just got around to re-reading this one and I must say that I had an entirely different take on this book the second time around. When I first read this, I though this book was a total overreaction. Mono for months? Come on. I thought Mallory was just being a drama queen and it really annoyed me. I didn't really feel so bad for her. I thought the subplot was cheesy and unlikely and just generally hated the book.
However, last year, I began to feel really rundown and there was a point where I didn't get out of bed for two weeks. It took 4 months to get a diagnosis of mono and because I worked my butt off during the first of the illness, I relapsed hard and I was really sick. I was also told that like Mallory, mono hit me really hard and it could take months to recover. My spleen was swollen and I was in a lot of pain. I couldn't eat because I had no appetite and I lost 13lbs. My throat hurt. I had thrush. I slept all the time. I'm also prone to relapse and I still have symptoms 9 months later. Yes, 9 months. I've had so many problems and issues.
After this past year, I can truly understand Mal in this book. The physical and emotional toll that it can take on your body can drive you crazy. I really feel bad that it had to be Mallory. She always gets the short end of the straw and it gets tiring. Sorry for rambling, but I wanted to give you guys a deeper picture of what Mallory was probably experiencing.
As far as the subplot? I found it better the second time around. I liked how the kids put together those baskets and the carnival. As unrealistic as it might have seemed, I have no doubt from experience with nursing homes that the residents probably enjoyed it. Have you ever seen a lonely person's face light up when they get a visitor? I also have found that a lot of the residents DO love toys. It gives them something to do and makes them feel young again.

I never really questioned the length of Mal's illness since this book was my only experience with mono. Sorry you had to experience things for yourself!

You don't tend to think about the mental stress of a physical illness until you have one. Being sick for so long probably got the ball rolling for Mallory's anxiety/depression arc.

I had mono when I was 15 years old, and it took it's toll on me so hard. I was sick for months, and was in and out of school. I was also a dancer and took dance 4 times a week, and I couldn't do that for months. It was a very rough period for me, so I totally sympathize with what Mallory had to go though.
