This is further proof Ann hated Mal. She made her father lose his job, she makes Mal take riding lessons but she ends up afraid of riding , then she gives Mal mono. The amount poor Mal goes through it's a wonder she eventually leaves .

I don't understand why the rest of the Pikes couldn't go to NY and watch the parade. Mal could have stayed home and maybe one of her friends could stay with her while she's sick? There was no need for all the family to miss out.

^Because when your kid is sick you stay home. Have we learned nothing these past few years? If the Pikes had left her sick and alone then everyone would have screamed about what horrible parents they were.

Ugh, I was almost done with my review and accidentally exited out of Chrome, eating the text. Oh well, there's not much to say about this one.
That's not to say it isn't good- I actually really liked it. It's very wholesome, I guess. The subplot is really nice, the Pikes turn down a chance to go to the parade so they seem spend Thanksgiving together, and Mal tries to leave the BSC but the other girls tell her she's irreplaceable (not exactly in those words, but yeah). I know that it's clear that AMM hates Mal (she's sick mono for months because she has a severe case, of course), but it weirdly turns out to be kind of heartwarming. Idk why it works for me lol.
I guess I can sympathize. I'm not the healthiest- I suffer from severe allergies and frequent headaches, birth of which make me fatigued. And after having covid, I know what true fatigue is. It's miserable and the description of it in this book is actually pretty well-written.
There isn't really much to snark, just a couple of kind of funny moments.
In Chapter 8, Jessi gives Margo a list of things Mal can do to help with the BSC project, saying this is all stuff she can do from her bed. Baking cookies is one of them. How?!
In Chapter 12, Mal reads a book called Lucy Berky and the Thanksgiving Turkey (it isn't real, unless I didn't try hard enough with my Google search). In it, Lucy saves all the turkeys from being eaten on Thanksgiving and everyone eats cheese pizza instead. This sounds like a book later Dawn would like.
Yeah, for some reason I just really liked this one.

Even though she has mono and isn't allowed to do much and has to dropout out of the BSC, her parents still expects her to sit for her siblings! All seven of them on her own no less. Honestly they take her for granted.

I had mono a few years ago when I was in my early 30s. It only lasted a little over a week, thank goodness, and not a few months. But I remember I had the worst sore throat of my life. It hurt so bad to swallow or eat anything so I mostly just sucked on popsicles and ate very soft foods. It was terrible, but weirdly, I haven't been really sick since that happened.
I thought the part where Mallory's mom makes her lay down on a lawn chair while they were eating Thanksgiving dinner was a little odd. Would she really be that tired that she couldn't sit upright? While I was sick, I did spend a lot of time laying on the couch in front of the TV, but I was also able to sit at the kitchen table or get up and use the bathroom.
Mallory being the one to get sick didn't surprise me as she always gets the crap storylines. This would have been more interesting if it had been Kristy or Claudia. Kristy, because she's the President and how would they run without her? Although I guess they already got that later. Wasn't it Kristy's Worst Idea where she quits for awhile? Or there's some book where she's not around for a while and Abby has to fill in as President. I honestly don't remember, but I swear I remember reading about this.
Claudia being sick would also be interesting because would they still have meetings there? I was surprised that Mallory was able to spend so much time around her friends and siblings because you think her parents wouldn't want her to get anyone else sick. If Claudia was sick, they might have to move the meetings. Also someone mentioned this earlier, but it would make sense for her to go back a grade for missing so much school if she was sick.
They just gave Mallory this plot because a) they don't like Mallory and b) they couldn't think of another plot to give her. Or possible both.
I thought the old folks home scene was nice and I think the majority of the residents would have enjoyed it. Sure, you always have a few grumpy old people, but for there most part I bet they loved it.

Who would've made the most interesting story if they got this plotline? My first thought was either Jessi or Abby because they're always working out and seem to both have tons of energy. Mary Anne getting sick would change almost nothing. She would be home knitting or something anyway. Claudia also spends most of her time indoors, but they couldn't have the meetings there if she was contagious.

Would they change this to Covid now? From what I hear that can linger for months.
I think Kristy would be the obvious choice because she would lose total control of the club while she was out. Her household was insane, and she would be worthless around there, too.

The club temporarily disbanded in the next book. I do think Kristy getting sick would be the most interesting. Abby too, but we got that in mystery 35. sparklymouse, Mallory would absolutely get long covid. I suspect I have a version of it myself (it's not as bad as Mal's mono in this book). I'm not sure how the BSC would even operate during covid, come to think of it.

Mallory would get the sickest and Dawn would refuse the vaccine.

Mallory would get the sickest and Dawn would refuse the vaccine. Oh noooooo. I hate this thought, but I can imagine late series Dawn as an antivaxxer. Ugh.
