Not my favorite "read." I found something new thing to add to my "I don't like Dawn" list from this one. Dawn is baby-sitting Stephie who is super excited about celebrating her nanny, Joanna's birthday later that night. Stephie wants to bake Joanna a huge layer cake with "nine layers." This is on pages 7 and 8. Dawn (not directly to us, thank goodness) actually had the nerve to try explaining to 8 year old Stephie why humans don't need the amount of sugar contained the mix! Not nice or necessary, Dawn! On the cover "Maggie" (with the green rat tail) looks like some photos of a very un-attractive Logan. The girl in blue, scary, reminds me of that neighbor of mine who stole some of my books when I was 13 or 14.

^ Speaking of neighbour who steals, our next door neighbours (2 girls) bought us the Twister movie one year for Christmas and then stole it from us

I really think dawn really is selfish and spoiled. It seems like she moves to te most convenient place for her to be the center of attention. I dunno - it does take balls to do what she did, but it's pretty funny when halfway through the flight she realizes it was really dumb!

The more I think about it, the more unrealistic Dawn's whole situation was. Most 13 year olds would be made to stay in one place and live with it until they were 18. Dawn moved a million times and flew back and forth for vacations a million more times....that can't have been cheap, and I never got the impression that her parents were rich.

^ I always thought that, too. I just figured that Sharon was very liberal in that way, letting her kids do what they wanted for the sake of their happiness (so to speak). And also, the fact that she was able to do what she wanted, in a way, helped to create Dawn's "independent" attitude. But if Dawn's 8th grade year was a regular one, she would have been really messed up school wise. I don't even know how she'd be able to graduate.

Rereading this one right now, and I noticed this. The TV station that interviews the girls is WPCN. Um... so an east coast TV station flew out to interview the W<3KC? Because a TV station west of the Mississippi river would start with a K.
I never had any trouble with the girls on the front. Maggie is the one with the green hair, Jill has the darkest hair (as mentioned in the book) so she's in the blue suit, Dawn always has those dorky bangs on all the other covers so she's the one playing with Stephie's (?) hair, and Sunny is the loungy one with the phone, because her hair is the closest to "strawberry" (again, in the book).

I thought I read somewhere that Dawn was supposed to be the cool, laid back member of the club. Wow, I can't believe she'd book a ticket and fly back to Connecticut. Or think that just because her dad was engaged to Carol that he didn't want her around.

The books always tell us that Dawn is laid back and "California Casual" but she never seems to act like it after about book 20. She's always shrieking like an uptight harpy at anyone who wants to eat sugar or accidentally throws a soda can in the recycling.

I don't know what Dawn expected her mother to do when she got to CT. I did get tired of hearing about her bicoastal life. I think Dawn thought since her parents really didn't get along, that she could get away with it. It seemed to be a common theme, to me at least. Divorced parents rarely communicated throughout the series (Did Ed and Maureen even talk when Stacy would take the train to NYC alone? And Watson and Lisa were just a mess. No wonder why Karen was such a brat). Maybe she assumed her mom would understand how she felt about Carol. I was happy Sharon sent her back, though. When I first read the book, I feared she'd get to stay with little consequences. I second whoever said I would've just gone somewhere. Take off for an island. Though then she'd have to pay for more expenses (hotel, plain tickets for her and her father to fly back, etc.) She'd be babysitting until the day she died to pay it off.

For being a real "individual," Dawn is quite wishy-washy. I think AMM forsaw giving Dawn her own spin-off series (she seemed to be the least likable BSC member of all) so she had her move back to California for a few books beforehand. The way she used her dad's credit card to book that flight to rebel against the engagement just foreshadows the 'darker side of Dawn' we see in the CA diaries books later.

Dawn was a 13 year old girl whose parents didn't seem to get along. She was in a bi-coastal situation and was dealing with complex emotions that she didn't know how to handle. She did something impulsive and very teenagerish, and had to deal with the consequences. She didn't move a million times, she moved to California of her own will twice. Did either of her parents ever sit down and talk with her seriously about the real reasons she couldn't settle completely in one place? I empathize with Dawn's struggle to figure out where she fits (although my parents are not divorced). Imagine having to deal with so much change in such a short time when you were only 13.
