I swear the Hills are featured again after this book, and Norman *does* lose weight. I don't remember any specifics, but I vaguely recall references to Norman trying to lose weight.

It was another Dawn book..."Farewell, Dawn? " She mentions that Norman looked thinner.

I really liked the subplot in this book even though I felt so sorry for Norman. I hope he got some help or at least worked through his problems. Maybe he did because I know a later book said he had lost some weight and was happier. I can sympathize with people just seeing you for your faults and this not making you able to even appreciate your accomplishments. Once again, I got some major insights into myself and my life from a BSC book Anyone else ever have that? I thought the subplot and main plot were tied together pretty well, too. I had to laugh at some of Dawn's antics when she tried to be cool and Kristy's response to her, especially. I can't believe that she actually wore her "new look" out in public but this reminded me of something I used to do with putting on sleezier clothes than I would ever dream of wearing in public (I wear the Kristy uniform daily and have been accused of being a "goody-good") and doing little "fashion shows" for myself in the mirror. But I never would have considered letting anyone know about this (I have no idea why I just felt the need to reveal it!) and it was my little secret I can totally see why Lewis freaked out when he saw Dawn and am glad she realized she didn't need the new look and attitude. Once again, though, a book that went against the "Dawn is an individual" description as she tried to change herself for a guy.

I agree with what everyone has said about Norman and the Hill family. I felt so bad for the kid, he should have had a better support system around him.
Dawn actually made me laugh in this book with her heavy metal comment. Although agreed, once again Dawn went against her so called individuality for a guy.

I just re-read this book and I LOVE it. I think it is one of my all-time favorites. So many great moments - Dawn chewing her first ever piece of gum (wtf!) to be cool, Dawn saying the wrong answer in class and then some random girl (Sue?) sending her a note about how funny it was, Dawn and Lewis kissing... argh the kisses in the BSC are so weird! They sound all romantic and WAY too heavy for 13 year olds.
I loved reading about Dawn changing herself. At least she acknowledges that it's not in her normal character to do so. Claudia was definitely jealous of how Dawn looked. Ooh and when Dawn is smacking her gum at the BSC meeting and Kristy is like "do you MIND?!" and Dawn is all "Chill out, it's not like setting off firecrackers" ha! So funny.
I was surprised MA didn't tell Dawn "oh you don't need to change" etc. Seems kinda out of character for her. I still can't stand the Norman subplot just because it's so sad. He tells one of the sitters how he overheard his dad wondering how they ended up with a fat kid. Sad. And that neighbor Elizabeth... geesh. Someone needed to have a talk with her.
Oh, one other thing, we always talk about how the BSC intrude on family problems and rush to save the day, in this book they are discussing Normans problem and they are all debating whether or not it's their place to talk to his parents, teacher, etc.

I'm most disappointed in Claudia in this book. She could have been like, "This isn't really you, Dawn, but we can have fun experimenting until you snap out of the funk you're in." If nothing else she could have lent Dawn a few accessories so she didn't have to destroy pretty much all her clothes. (That's a lot of ripped up sweat shirts and jeans! My mom would have been so peeved if I did that.)

Ooh, I could see Claudia and Dawn going through Claudia's closet together and coming up with all kinds of weird outfits for Dawn. That would have been fun to read about!
I never understood how Dawn could rip up a sweatshirt or whatever and turn it into a new top that actually looked good.

I never understood how Dawn could rip up a sweatshirt or whatever and turn it into a new top that actually looked good. My guess is that she couldn't. Although I want to try a couple of the things in this book, and I actually own this one, which I found at a used bookstore, so I shouldn't talk.

I just read this book for the first time a few months ago and then again a few weeks ago. I was reluctant to read it because of the Norman subplot because things like that usually bother me. I think this is becoming one of my favorite Dawn books. I really like Lewis and like how he doesn't think Dawn needs to change. Surprisingly, I even liked the Norman subplot. I felt really sorry for him and can relate as I also have jerk family members (thankfully not my parents but my grandma) who are totally judgmental based on looks. Anyone who would say their own grandchild looked "just awful...." Anyway, I also actually thought the BSC dealt better with "intervening" in this one than they have in other ones. That Elizabeth neighbor was such a jerk, though, and so was Norman's dad (and Sarah too at times). I could have smacked them both. I hate people who judge based on looks. I agree about Claudia being jealous and also think it would have been more fun to see her trying to help Dawn think up some outfits. It seems like the club thinks that Stacey and Claudia have the monopoly on "creative and cool" looks. Another example is in MA's Makeover where Claudia and Stacey seem totally jealous.

This was the book that taught me how to blow bubbles with gum, although Mallory's instructions were kinda vague. She didn't mention that you have to kind of cover your tongue with the gum like a glove before you start blowing the bubble. I had to figure out that part myself.

read this for the first time a few weeks ago. I was glad to see dawn being normal, and not so grown up. Although, I was rolling my eyes a bit. Norman rocks, what a cool kid!

My parents would have killed me if I'd chopped up my clothes like Dawn did. (I'd thought about it, though, LOL.)
I was surprised that Mary Anne was so into Dawn's makeover at first. Isn't she supposed to be the "supportive" one? I figured she'd be like, "Oh, you're pretty the way you are, yadda yadda." Plus, that whole "Logan likes me the way I am" thing kind of ticked me off. What made her think that Lewis wouldn't have liked Dawn the way she was? (As it turned out, he did.)
Like several of you mentioned, I felt sorry for Norman. It was such a shame that his family haggled him about his weight so much. It's possible that one of his parents might have been overweight as a child, too, and didn't want Norman to go through what they did. I dunno. Whatever the case, they didn't quite handle it like they should have. At least they finally backed off some, though.

^I actually DID chop up some of my clothes, as did my best friend, but nothing we actually wore on a regular basis. They were just old sweatpants and t-shirts and stuff. I have a feeling we would have gotten in trouble if we'd used our "good" clothes!
