^ Oh yeah. I always forget that her original character was butchered by the ghostwriters.

I think it's totally understandable for Lewis to be shocked by Dawn! He mabye should've beem a little more subtle - but hey, he's a 13 (or 14? I think in the Dawn and the older boy MA mentions he's 14 but in this one he's 13 again... right? Probably because by then it was last winter again, instead of next winter) year old boy.

I need to re-read this. I just remember thinking their letters to each other were kinda weird.

Re: subplot. Norman Hill. I thought it was kind of weird for him to be the only large one in the family. I can see why being sad (brought on by the way his family and kids at school treated him) could make him eat. But, what made him big in the first place? Something had to start that cycle. His parents seemed very neglectful towards his emotional state and his sister was a BRAT!

Well, the Hills were really into exercising, right? It's possible that one of them had been "the fat kid" too.

I actually liked the subplot in this one better than most others. I'm at the point now where I basically just skip the babysitting stuff, but I always read about the Hills. I wonder if Sara teased her brother because he was frustrated with him for being different?

I thought his sister was horrible. Family loyalty, anyone? Geez.

The Norman subplot was painful to read. I felt so bad for him. Even his parents were jerks to him. If they didn't want him eating junk, there should've been none in the house. It's not healthy for ANYONE to eat that, just cause Sara was skinnier didn't make it any better for her to be eating.

^ITA. Word to his parents being jerks, too -- so nice when his dad saw his report card and was, like, "Why can't a smart kid like you lose some weight?" Nice priorities, you tool

Oh, I hated the Hill family! I mean, not Norman, I felt bad for him, but his family members were just horrible. Ugh!

I definitely think the Hills could have done more to help Norman lose weight. The whole family could have been involved, like someone else suggested, instead of making the poor kid feel like an outcast.

Yeah, it was ridiculous for the Hills to keep all that junk food in the house and then say, "Oh but Norman you can't have any! Go eat a carrot and then take a few laps around the block!" Poor guy.
Does Norman (ugh why is his name Norman?! How dorky!) appear in any other books? Does he actually lose weight and do his parents stop being so awful to him?

I remember the Hills appearing here and there, but I don't know how much was mentioned about the weight issue after this book.
