i bet mrs kishi (and mrs ramsey, for that matter) would have beat the hell out of mrs lowell if they knew she treated their daughters that way. i can't see any parent sitting back and letting an adult intimidate a child. plus mrs kishi and mrs ramsey seem the most protective of their children.

It's been awhile since I read this one, but didn't Claudia talk to her dad about what happened at the Lowells'? He was upset for her, if I remember correctly, but he didn't seem inclined to hurt anyone....

A part of this book that made me laugh was when Kristy was explaining to the other BSC members that Mrs. Lowell wouldn't like Stacey and Dawn because they come from divorced parents.
Then Claudia says something along the lines of, "Ooh! I'm telling! I'm telling Mrs. Lowell on you!"

Claudia talks with her Dad (and Janine) on pages 91-92. Mr. Kishi is sad by what happened but glad that Claudia is not racist. What I still don't get is why Shannon was left out of a possible "Blond, blue-eyed, sitter?" Although her parents seemed on the verge of a divorce. Also Mrs. Lowell, shouldn't have needed a sitter to being with if she truly believed a mother should ALWAYS be with their children at home.

^ It's been awhile since I read this one, but I don't remember Mrs. Lowell ever saying that she thought moms should always be at home with their kids....

^I don't know (think) that she necessarily said that, I just meant that mind frame might be one she'd have that's all.

I think by then the BSC had decided they didn't want to provide services for a racist customer, let alone cater to her Hitleresque demands. IIRC, the discussion about how Mrs. Lowell wouldn't really approve of any of the sitters was pretty facetious.

Perhaps when Kristy told her they had other sitters and pointed out what she thought Mrs. Lowell wouldn't like about them and then makes the comment to her "I didn't think you would want them", Mrs. Lowell realized they knew she was racist? I guess it doesn't matter b/c they probably weren't trying to hide it.
I didn't enjoy this book at all. It makes me sad that people continue to think this way.

I didn't enjoy this one either. The band idea was cute at the start but morphed into something "too much." I don't see a bunch of young kids playing music from a musical that in real life (if the characters had been 'real') they probably would not have heard of at that age let alone seen many times. At least it wasn't more Wizard of Oz! I wish the band had continued. The main plot, came so out of no where, with not a very strong story to back it up. Thinking about it now, I wonder if the "Lowells" were supposed to be the "alter egos" of the Delaneys, with an extra kid. But then I liked Amanda and Max better anyway despite their own initial not always nice ways.

I really can't imagine what this "band" would have sounded like. I mean a bunch of kazoos would make me want to drive a nail in my head! The whole thing sounds like the biggest cluster ever!

I thought the band was really cue cause I'm musical too, but I preferred the main plot and thought it was really sad, especially with how Jessi was treated and the revelation from the kids when Kristy baby sat for them.

^ i am musical too, but that's the reason i didn't like the band. we did fiddler on the roof my junior year and it took us months to prepare -- you can't just throw together a band! obviously they are just kids and it's supposed to be fun and a lot of them don't really play instruments, but still :]

Did you have kazoos featured prominently?

You know you are obsessed with the BSC when...
You already own copies of the books, but when you see a brand new box set (of books 53-56), you buy it. That's what I did. My copy of these books are brand new, almost as if they haven't been read. The pages are slightly aged but other than that it's almost perfect, which is rare for a book published in 1992 (and made me want to break it out!)

Sorry about the double posting but I want to keep this separate because this comment is about the *actual book*. Holy moly there was a lot of music concert in this book. I skipped the sub-plot this time around and practically skipped the entire book! The last 4 chapters are devoted to the stupid concert! They could have structured it out better, so that the Lowell-racist plot went on longer and finished later.
I think Claud looks really good on the cover. In fact, that outfit is still in style today!
