I would've liked it if Whitney's parents told her what she did was wrong and there should've been consequences to her actions. After all, she was going be mainstreamed, so she would've understood what she did was wrong.
On a side note, I loved reading about Jack's dates and the food descriptions.

i think i hate this book more with every reread. whitney was horrible. she was whiney and vindictive, and she got away with a lot of crap that other people couldn't get away with. especially considering that they are trying to integrate her into the public school system, this was the worst way to prepare whitney for real life. at the very least, the police should have talked to whitney. she needs to realize that telling kids that she's babysitting and taking them away is illegal. having down's syndrome doesn't excuse that.
also, all the dates were horrible. i normally love jack and i think he's a great dad, but get a grip please.

After all, she was going be mainstreamed, so she would've understood what she did was wrong. On a side note, I loved reading about Jack's dates and the food descriptions. Were the foods and dates purposely combined LMAO makes me wonder. Cause I loved reading them too in this book, a lot. I even liked reading about Dawn and Whitney looking at magazines and going shopping. I think she should have been spoken to about it, but I never thought of that before. It sounds like Dawn was acting like her mother. I used to read this book over and over, but now I'm an adult and am critical of bad parenting even though I don't plan to have children. I think they should have explained to Whitney that even though Dawn will be like a friend, she has had experience with baby sitting and is there with her to see that she is doing ok, though I know at 12-13 most yearn to be independent.

^That was almost, at least one of, the worst part(s) of this book. Whitney's parents in trying to grant her independence ended up doing the opposite and potentially causing Clover and Daffodil harm. I am so thankful all three were safe.

The only thing I really remember about this one is Whitney dancing around singing made up songs during the outdoor concert. Classical music, I believe. Dawn was all huffy thinking people were disgusted by Whitney because she had DS. I would bet you anything their behavior had nothing to do with anything beyond Whitney ruining their concert experience. That's like a baby crying in a movie theater. Shut it up.

^oh I hate babies in a movie theater. I went to transformers 3 tonight and somebody had a baby that cried a lot. Why would you bring your baby to that??? You know it will be loud! People are so self involved lately...ugh anyway back to the book...
I liked the subplot of this one but not the actual plot. As everyone has said, Whitney just wasn't likable. What are the chances that she didn't have to cross the street to get to the carnival? Considering how she freaked that one time, I am sure that would have gone badly.
I loved the terrible dates! I just can't get past how much Jeff and Dawn didn't like Carol so a couple of terrible dates later they magically do.

^Yikes the potential danger for crossing the street(s) never occurred me. Scary. It reminds me of (the car scene with) Hannie running to get Kristy in "Welcome to the BSC, Abby." That was so scary and I wish it had been left out but so thankful Hannie was okay!

But that Karina woman called Whitney disgusting, how many babies are called disgusting for crying in a theatre? I don't think Dawn sounded huffy, I think she was a total pushover in this book and really sweet, not exactly how she acts in every book, though this could be cause baby sitting brings out the best in her at times.
Good point about Whitney crossing the street. I didn't think of that.

Sorry. I don't know why I said Whitney was sexy in my last post on here. Maybe there was a point to that?
Anyway, I skipped over this book. I was kind of reading them in order, starting around 67, for some reason, and I've gotten to this one. I started reading it but stopped. One scene that I do remember is Dawn and her family having a picnic in the park when a concert is happening? And Dawn is sure of Carol because of the way she acts around Whitney, unlike the people around them who scoff at her?
I like commenting on the covers, so I'll say that Dawn looks very "Dawn-like" to me here, so I like this picture of her. I always thought it would be cooler if they were looking at clothes or cool arts and crafts or something, and I always remember the creepy doll on the cover, too.

lol, so I've been thinking about this book for the past week. As I mentioned the last time I posted in this thread (which was over 3 years ago?!? I've been on this board that long???), this book inspired me to make stuffed cherry tomatoes, which were GREAT, and I guess I got a craving for them again because I've gone to a couple different get-togethers in the past week, and I've made 3 batches of stuffed cherry tomatoes, each with a different kind of filling. And all because of this book!

I hate tomatoes on their own, but they made the food in that Karina chapter sound so delicious! The sandwich with the onions and such sounded the best, and I eat much healthier now than back then, sometimes I feel picky like Dawn at restaurants.
