Just finished this one last night, hadn't read it for years so it was good to finally reread it. The part i really liked in this book (which might be random) was the babysitting chapter with Dawn in California watching the 2 kids Carol brings over. The kids sounded cute and i loved when Jeff was trying to watch the movie but just gave up and helped Dawn keep the children entertained instead, i thought it was sweet when he noticed the little girl seemed lost and said he'd teach her to build a house of cards. I really liked the end of the chapter when Dawn gives Jeff half the money she earned for babysitting, those 2 have some really nice moments during the series! Totally agree with all that said Stacey was a total pain in the neck, and i was silently like "Go Mary Anne"!! when she said "Your staying home with the kids and i'm going out".... that made me laugh.

I feel like even when Jeff was being a jerk, he was being, well, a ten year old boy.

^ I'm with you on that, Greer. Jeff was probably my favorite kid of that age to read about. He and Dawn had some cute interactions throughout the series.
*Reminds self to reread "Ghost at Dawn's House" later....*

I think that Sea City is basically the same city that Jersey Shore, the tv show, takes place in.
I really like this book! One of my favourites that takes place in Sea City.
I must say that this is the most wrecked BSC book I own, with all the pages coming out. I actually had to read this book in "sections" because the book was falling apart so much.

IIRC, Sea City is very loosely based on Wildwood, where AMM and her family summered. Jersey Shore takes place in Seaside Heights (which is actually closer to Ann's hometown of Princeton). Wildwood is all the way down by Atlantic City, where the Situation called Snooki fat.

I also remember reading that Sea City was based in part on two different cities, Surf City and Avalon (both in New Jersey). I was sort of disappointed as a kid to find out Sea City wasn't real. I thought it sounded like the coolest place ever to go on vacation.

^It still sounds like a lot of fun and great place to have a BSC get together.

I am re-reading and just finished the chapter on Kristy baby-sitting for the Rodowskys at the Community Pool all day. I know Shea was 9 and seemed to have a good head on his shoulders. But wouldn't it have been "safer" to have asked Logan to take this job? I mean in terms of being able to go into the boys locker room if need be? I thought it was nice of Kristy to let Jackie and Archie buy lunch but think that had disaster all over it. It was funny how Archie scarfed down the candy bar in case "Kristy was going to make him give it back like the devil dogs, etc."
Stacey on the cover looks completely smitten in a much older way with Toby and vice versa.
I loved MA/Vanessa and wish that had been developed more back in Stoneybrook. I also thought it was funny that MA told us that sometimes when she is around Vanessa she'll start talking in rhymes. Other than in this book, did that ever happen?

I liked reading about the dates that Mary Anne had with Alex and all the food descriptions in the book makes me hungry. It's too bad that Mary Anne never told Mallory about Chris liking her. Maybe if she told Mallory, maybe we could've read some letters that would've been shared by Mallory and Chris.

^ I understand why Mary Anne never said anything. She and Vanessa really developed a bond during this vacation (which I think was really sweet), and while Mary Anne is also obviously friends with Mallory, she would have been sensitive to what Vanessa was going through. Mallory didn't really NEED to know; I don't think she ever expressed any interest in Chris.

I can also see why Mary Anne didn't tell Mallory about Chris. I agree that Mary Anne probably knew that might be embarassing for Vanessa if it was shared with anyone else, so she was being sensitive to her feelings. I'm glad for Vanessa that the rest of the family never got wind of it - can you imagine the teasing, especially from the triplets?

I super love this book! It's funny someone mentioned the town was the town from the Jersey shore because in my mind I can see Toby growing up to the be the situation!
One thing that I for some reason zeroed in on was in the first chapter when MA was talking about her best friends and the jealousy and she reassured Kristy that Dawn wouldn't affect their friendship. Then I realized she balls her eyes out as Dawn is getting on the plane and they would be separated for *gasp* two weeks but MA never even says goodbye to Kristy.......GRRRRR - if you couldn't tell, I love the MA/Kristy friendship but hate the MA/Dawn one!

^To be fair, Dawn didn't affect their friendship, Mary Anne did that all by herself. You know what I think of Dawn but as I re-read this time around, I'm realizing that often times the real "problem" is MA. She isn't a very nice person, especially where Kristy is concerned. As much as I liked when MA (finally) showed true concern and care about Kristy in Memory Garden, I wouldn't have blamed Kristy if she (K) had questioned that. I mean if Kristy did a double take and wondered why it took her possible death to get MA to care for her again. Meanly sad but true.

I agree MA is definitely to blame! What strikes me as odd too is that Kristy just takes whatever. She lets MA treat her whatever way and when MA finally wants to show her some attention she just laps it right up. This aggravates me because friendships take a ton of work and theirs was so one sided after Dawn came. I think Kristy really needed a new BF and maybe that was what Abby was supposed to be?
