So I was rereading this one...
How exactly is it less dangerous after the Phantom was caught? He was never in Stoneybrook. The copycat burglar is still around, and apparently they're not going to bother looking for him?? Real logical.
The police didn't think it was the Phantom because he usually sticks to "millionaires." So...they have nothing worth stealing? That seems to put a damper on our theory that all of Stoneybrook is wealthy. Or maybe it just reinforces it that even serial burglars consider the earnings of lawyers and bankers chump change.
Mary Anne's burglar alarms weren't half bad considering this was pre-Home Alone.
Claudia and Stacey wear baggy jeans and bulky sweaters to the dance and try to talk Kristy out of a jumper and turtleneck? Huh? Since when did jeans become impressive to boys and why is Kristy insisting on wearing a dress? These first few books really are way different from the rest of the series.

Yeah, that occurred to me as well. They weren't concerned about the Goldman's robbery after hearing it was a "copycat" crime. So copycat criminals aren't dangerous? Also, I hardly think the Phantom was the first and only burglar in Connecticut. Why the mass hysteria over the practically non-existant threat of him when there's probably countless others around? Most burglaries don't make the papers I'll never get over Kristy blowing off the BSC meeting to hang out with the Shillabers in MA Saves the Day.

Yeah they are a lot different from the later series. Kristy even wears knee socks and a skirt to school a couple of times in the first book. Then she suddenly got a sporty, casual image later. Very odd how in this book, Stacey and Claudia wear jeans and bulky sweaters to a dance (I don't know, just seems a bit random to wear that to dance) and yet they criticise Kristy for wearing a dress And even more amusing, in the series they criticise her for wearing jeans all the time. I don't see what's wrong with that, jeans are stylish

I think it's for Richard to be worried over Mary Anne's welfare when a criminal/copy cat is on the loose... But why tell him?
Speaking of safety, whenever there are new clients why don't the parents check them out...what with the f'ed up world we live in, anything can happen.

There are two instances that I can think of where a parent/adult checks out a new client. Doesn't Mr Pike check out the (nuts, I forget their name - the new family) in Mallory and the Ghost Cat? And doesn't Charlie accompany Kristy to the door on her first job at the Hoyts in Stacey and the Mystery Money?

^Yup you're right. Kristy/Mal act all embarrassed but they both acknowledge that having someone come along to meet the family is routine when they get a new client. I'm pretty sure there's tons of examples of them NOT doing that as well, though.

Thanks Jen. I've never read Mallory and the Ghost Cat.
As for the Hoyts. What was Kristy doing there? Babysitting Terry- Stacey's boyfriend. I haven't read this in ages. Or did he have a younger sister?

She was babysitting his younger brother, if I'm not mistaken.

Hahaha that bloody 'red ribbon' code ;D This book really has the 'old book' flavour... Mary Anne's dad being OMG strict, Kristy wearing dresses, MA's hair in plaits, Claudia and Stacey sitting with their 'cool' crowd, Janine speaking scarily textbookish (to an absurd level common in the old books), Stacey not being able to eat anything...
Ooh also an outdated moment... when only Stacey has a video recorder and they're excited about watching a film on it.. ah how time goes by..

I loved this book when I was a kid. I always was amused by all the burglar traps Mary Anne set up!

^ Loved MA's trap. I used to make similar ones (just to "trick" my parents). Of course, I was five but .... ;D I don't really care for this book but haven't read it for a while and might like it better next time I do. There are some funny parts that I remember.
