They said as much in Liz's original flyer that Janine found.

Didn't it read "Want to make fast money the easy way"? Just like today's spam emails.

I think it was very close to that if not that actual wording.

^ I find it hard to believe that it didn't get around to the parents who were hiring the BSA that they had that kind of attitude towards sitting. Then again, if things had happened that way, we wouldn't have needed the BSC to step in and save the day.

^I still can't believe none of the parents were aware of what was going on or that apparently until this, has never thought to get to know their baby-sitter before hiring. Mrs. Newton is my favorite BSC parent, Jamie my favorite charge. I am always so thankful the BSC did find him before he got hurt outside. And I have never understood how Charlotte's parents, who we are repeatedly told, she is so close to never had a true clue of what was bothering her. But lol as you said Starrynight, that's what the BSC was for, to save the day.

The kids might have been afraid, at least in Jamie's case, to say anything. Although when the book was written, smoking was far more common than now so he was likely accustomed to seeing people smoke despite his parents not.

I was thinking about this book this morning, because it takes place right around this time of year. Maybe it's time for a re-read. I liked that Thanksgiving was mentioned, even though it was just a quick paragraph. Does anyone else wish Christmas hadn't been skipped over? This book ended before Christmas, and #4 picked up in January. It would have been cute to read about them exchanging gifts, maybe at a pre-Christmas sleepover.

^I truly wish we had gotten to read about Mary Anne and her father celebrating Thanksgiving with Kristy and her family. At this point in the series, Kristy and Mary Anne did consider one another family and it would could have been touching to get to see. In general, I still wish there had been more 7th grade books and a December holidays celebration would have been fun. The BSC could have celebrated their first few months as a Club.

I've been told by friends who know that it hangs around for awhile.

I had forgotten that Mary Anne and Richard were going to have Thanksgiving with the Thomases. I do remember, however, that Mary Anne was baking cranberry bread for Thanksgiving. I also recall Stacey Christmas shopping in NYC and buying gifts for Claudia and Mary Anne, but no mention of whether she got anything for Kristy. I hope she did.

Lol, Starrynight, good point. IDK maybe because I like Jamie so much and usually think his mom is a good one, that bothered me. Also, if a baby-sitter really burned a hole in the Newtons chair. I know Jamie is a fictional character but I was just wanting his care in that book to have been better and thanks to the BSC it was. Candykane, I had forgotten about Stacey doing that and also hope she got Kristy something. IIRC when Mary Anne went credit card crazy in "The Secret Life of MA Spier," we are told of every gift she bought except for her dad and Jeff so maybe this is just another BSC gift mystery?

What sticks out the most to me from this book is Charlotte's comment when they get to Polly's. "Christmas already? But we just had Thanksgiving!"
Have times really changed so fast that a book written, what, 27 years ago, sounds absolutely quaint now? How I wish that was still the case! In 2013 anyone who doesn't start listening to Christmas music before the last week of November is considered a stick-in-the-mud, and if you wait into December at all for putting up decorations you're looked at like a pure nut.

For all you Americans (I dislike the term American), it isn't that far off between Thanksgiving and Christmas (a month). I kind of like how Canada has it in early October (obviously I'm biased). Having Halloween, Veterans Day (we call it Remembrance Day) then Thanksgiving and then Christmas is a lot in the span of 2 months. Would be fun though!
