Stacey hanging out in the candy store just reminds me of how I've always, since I was a kid, thought it was so odd that Stacey was SO okay with her diabetes. I mean she rarely ever slipped up and they always made sure to let us know that Stacey was happy to munch an apple while the rest of the girls (except Dawn, of course!) chowed down on Snickers and Doritos. I always just found that to be weird because Stacey was only diagnosed at the age 12 right? I think if I was 13 and couldn't eat sweets, I'd have been going nuts and would've complained about it nonstop, especially if my friends were gorging themselves right in front of me. That's so true. If Stacey had had a Dawn-like attitude to food before her diagnosis, it would have been understandable. But from the sound of things, she had the typical diet of a 12-year-old. You'd think she'd be absolutely steaming about the fact that her friends were happily gorging on sweets in front of her - I sure as hell would have been! ;D

I had a friend who was diagnosed at a much younger age than Stacey and she snuck sweets pretty often. Not enough to go all Stacey's Emergency on us, of course! Stacey's "Oh, I don't really mind!" attitude seemed really weird to me. Heck, I'm 24 and if I were to be surrounded by candy and unable to have any of it, I'd go out of my mind. (Hey, I can't drink, smoke or have caffeine for health reasons, I'm too much of a chicken to try illegal drugs, I have terrible luck so I can't gamble...sugar's the only addiction I can possibly have! )

If I found out I couldn't eat sweets at a young age I would have been mad! Especially while my friends were pigging out in front of me.
The sandwich boards in this book both made me cringe and laugh out loud at the same time. I think it was the visual I was getting in my head of it. For some reason I pictured Kristy wearing a sandwich board ringing a bell trying to attract attention...I do not know why I imagined that.

She probably was upset but being Sophisticated Stacey she wouldn't act like it was bothering her.

Stacy does kind of go crazy at one point, remember Stacy's Emergency? She starts eating sweets secretly and makes herself sick.

Wasn't it in Goodbye Stacey Goodbye when she has her big Candyland fantasy dream?

Yeah, it was. That's one of the few things I remember clearly from the books.

Stacy does kind of go crazy at one point, remember Stacy's Emergency? She starts eating sweets secretly and makes herself sick. Actually, eating the stuff doesn't make Stacey sick. It doesn't help the situation but she probably really is craving the chocolate and sweets more than ever at that time because of her body being out of whack. I know the other girls make statements in a few books that Stacey made herself sick by eating the sweets and not taking care of herself right, but in Stacey's Emergency when it happens, the dr. says this isn't true. Sorry if I sound defensive about this. My aunt is diabetic and people always told her that she "made" herself sick by eating too many sweets, not eating properly, etc and that when she gets sicker, they accuse her of doing it to herself by cheating on her diet, etc. While these things don't help, you can't really "give" yourself Type 1 diabetes, which is what Stacey has. It made my aunt feel really terrible to be sick and have people blaming her. I can also see how Stacey would have the willpower to stick to her diet (except in a few rare cases). Have seen people do this with giving up many different foods and things that will harm their health and know some who say that after you don't have sugar for a while, your body doesn't care that much. I'm sure she does get annoyed not being able to eat the stuff but knows that it is best for her and is pretty much okay with it. Anyway, to get off this subject.... Gracie, I get the same impression of Kristy ringing the bell and wearing the sandwich boards ;D

I always thought it was weird Stacey had diabetes because the only person I knew who had that was my grandma and she was in her late 70s when I was reading BSC. She definitely couldn't have sweets at all, she would suck on sugarless candy occasionally but she was very strict about her diet. I couldn't imagine a young girl having to do all that.

One of my grandmas was diabetic. She didn't follow her diet too well. She'd pull a Claudia and hide candy around the house. I remember as a kid finding Snicker bars in her washcloth drawer.

^ Were your grandmas type 1 diabetics like Stacey where they got it as kids? If so, that's really great they lived that long (sotypical's being in her 70s) since I know type 1 diabetics usually have lots of complications and often shorter life spans. Maybe this will be encouraging for my aunt, who has had diabetes since she was a teenager and is now 51 (she is sure she's dying soon : ;D

I have no idea what time she had or how long she had it. She had it as long as I was alive though, but I think she was already around 60 when I was born, but she did live til she was like 84!

well on the new cover she doesn't look so happy to be there...of course she also looks way older than 12! (she looks at least my age )One thing about the old covers for the first few books, they DID look their ages. ..even if they weren't always the most flattering pictures.. I loved the way MA lookedo n MA saves the day though. *sigh* This was one of my favorites. When I was in the hospital last year they had acopy of it laying around, and I read it again haha. Now i'm just waiting on my graphic novel edition to come in....i even put in the rush order for it...grrrr!!

That's really great ;D I would assume she had type 2 (adult diagnosed which is not quite as severe - not to say that it's not bad) but obviously don't know. I do know one person with type 1 who lived into his 70s but he was completely blind for 20 years. My aunt is already "legally" blind (though she still cuts hair! - ahhh - it's scary ;D) Anyway, about this book, I was just thinking about Mrs. Newton hiring the other sitters for Lucy just because they were older. I actually think this was riskier than hiring the younger BSC because she didn't know the other sitters. Older doesn't necessarily mean better and a lot of the times, it brings more issues into the picture (cigarettes and boyfriends were the perfect example - not to say that 12 year olds couldn't have those things, too. Just not as likely and she already knew the BSC was good.) That always bugged me. As always, I really like Jamie in this book
