Not sure if there was a thread for this -- I can never figure out if I'm searching ALL the threads when I use the search function!
Anyway, this book contained a few things that I'm not sure would have flown in a later BSC book -- Mary Anne commenting that the colonists must have been midgets, as opposed to normally-functioning-yet-shorter members of society or something, and the inclusion of retarded in the list of words Richard dislikes but Mary Anne uses when he's not around.
Loved the fight, but I thought the way the club members acted toward each other was also handled really well.
Does anyone else reread this book and forget that there is one chapter where Mary Anne sits for Jenny before the one where she's taken to the hospital? I always read through the one where Jenny plays with the paint-with-water book and think, "Wait, isn't she supposed to get sick?"

I remember them getting paid TEN WHOLE DOLLARS each for getting Jenny to the hospital, and thinking that was so much money. Also, I keep thinking there's only one Jenny job until I get into the book.

also in this one, mary anne basically flat-out says that dawn is ugly. And then, strangely enough, she becomes absolutely STUNNING (leaving Stacey speechless) as the series progresses.

I LOVE this book. It's definitely one of my favorites. I always feel bad for Mary Anne having to sit by herself at lunch. The BSC fight is probably my favorite ever. So hilarious.

This is one of the best BSC books!
I love the introduction of the Prezziosos. Mrs. Prezzioso is one of the most ridiculous characters to ever appear in a BSC book. She wears a freaking cocktail dress to a basketball game! What is wrong with that woman? And I love when she's like, "Nick, your new ascot!" because Mr. Prezzioso dares to play with his child.
It is the best BSC fight! It's exactly like the stupid, childish fights my friends and I had in seventh and eighth grade when we'd stomp on each others' unattended backpacks during phys ed and submit fake gossip to the school newspaper claiming two of the girls were secretly dating.

I loved the part where they fight at Jamie's party, even though I felt bad for Jamie. It was hilarious when Mary Anne is serving punch to Kristy and keeps pouring, ruining her clothes.

This book is definitely one of my favorites, too. I love reading about how Dawn and Mary Anne became friends. The fight at Jamie's was amusing, and probably indicitive of how actual 12 year olds might behave. I felt bad for him, though, because the girls were so ridiculous!

Yeah I really felt bad for Jamie at his birthday cause these girls are supposed to help out and stuff and they're stuffing napkins in each others faces and poor Jamie is just like WTF? How embarrassing for them.

^ Rest assured, it never would've happened in a later book though. Those girls would've known to put their emotions and personal conflict aside for the good of their babysitting charge

is this the one where mary anne tells the prezziosos that they looked like they had just stepped off a magazine cover and then everything got really awkward? and then on the next sitting job, mary anne says "i noticed that mrs. P didn't stand next to her husband and ask how they looked this time. i don't know if it was because of what i said, but i was sorry if it had caused a fight that had upset jenny."
that's basically paraphrased. but yeah. WHAT?

I just re-read this over the weekend, so I'm reviving the post!
^It is the one where MA says they look like a picture in a magazine.
I'm always surprised in this book at how QUICKLY the fight escalates... it's like 4 pages in and they're hurling insults at each other and stalking out of the meeting. I still think they were being super melodramatic about the job-hogging thing.
It surprises me how bold Mary Anne comes across in this book. Her note to Kristy that she never sends is hilarious! Later MA would never even write a note like that, I don't think.
Love how she decides Dawn isn't pretty, but she's PLEASANT, and that's much more important to Mary Anne! lol. Poor Dawn. I feel bad for Dawn in this book when MA is blatantly using her to get back at Kristy.
I wish Mariah and Miranda would have been fleshed out a bit more. They're mentioned a lot early on in the series and I always wonder about them. What the heck did they need Abby/Anna for when they already had these twins?!

;D
Funny how the later Dawn was simply stunning, absolutely breathtaking, to the point that Stacey was "almost speechless" when she first laid eyes on her.
I'm surprised the Prezzioso's found that insulting. It could be taken to mean they looked like models, in which case, isn't that a compliment?

I loved the MA/Mimi bonding in this one and also, as someone mentioned - the note MA didn't send Kristy - so funny! I thought Kristy was bing a little too mean, though, MA tried to make up several times but she just refused to give in.

Mary Anne in this books actually reminds me of myself when I was a bit younger. Quiet, meek, taking everything, trying to be the peacemaker, etc. But if someone really ticked me off, look out! I think this was a believable version.
I didn't feel too sorry for Dawn. After all, she allowed herself to be taken in by that whole thing. I was glad she forgave Mary Anne though. And Mary Anne taking charge was absolutely wonderful!
