^ Agree. Also, not saying that this makes it acceptable, but the thing at the party was a one time incident and people do make mistakes. Especially if they apologized (which I’m not sure if it mentioned if they did or not but I would assume that they did even if it wasn’t mentioned), I can see Mrs. Newton forgiving them and giving them another chance. After all, they were usually responsible, good sitters and Jamie loved them.

^ I would think that they would do that with Kristy, MA, and maybe Claudia, but not Stacey because didn't she only start babysitting Jamie when she joined the club?

^ Yes, but I think the same would apply to her just because she's in the club (whether or not this should make her seem trustworthy, I think it would) and the other girls trust her. So if Mrs. Newton trusted their judgement than Stacey would be okay, too, if this all makes sense what I'm trying to say in this post and the last one ;D

It makes sense to me. If I was a parent I would give them a second chance, especially if I have been trusting them to take care of my child for a long time.

It makes sense to me too, aln. Yeah, I see how Mrs. Newton would trust their judgement about Stacey, seeing how the BSC seem to really like Jamie and wouldn't let a hack (or whatever) babysit him.

I sure as hell wouldn't give them another chance. I would be thinking "Okay this is why I shouldn't have hired 12 year old sitters in the first place" and would be frantic that they'd behaved like this prior and I just didn't know about it.

^Same!! I would definitely see it as a reason to hire older, more mature sitters.

I always wondered why Mrs. Newton wasn't put off by that as well. This was the one chance for one of the parents to be like "Wow, why am I hiring 12 year olds?"...but then again, they sort of did that in book 3 by hiring the Babysitters Agency instead. Maybe Mrs. Newton felt guilty about that, and gave them another chance because they brought up how horrible the older girls were.

^ I think that book (#3) showed that the older girls were just as unreliable, if not more. This is just me, but I would feel much more confident leaving my kids with someone who gets in a big, petty and immature fight with their friends than someone who smokes and brings boyfriends over to make out (don't remember if this was actually mentioned but I assumed it) while sitting for them. No matter what, I'm glad she did have them baby-sit again because the Newtons are some of my favorite clients.

You made another good point aln. I would rather have a middle school girl babysit my children then a high school person. I think middle school girls would actually be more likely to play with my child and give them attention, high school girls a lot of time are more interested in boyfriends and going out and all that in my opinion.

^I think that's kind of a generalization. There are many high school girls with interests beyond boys and partying, and I'm POSITIVE most middle school girls aren't quite as perfect as the BSC members ;D

^^Yeah, I wouldn't have let ANYONE in my middle school go near my children.
High school was different story though.

I guess only in the BSC-verse are girls that age mature enough to babysit.

I deleted my last post that I just put on because I realized that it made no sense and didn't say what I was trying to say. Hopefully no one read it before and I can say things more clearly this time. ;D I think my point is and was that Mrs. Newton learned that you can't stereotype and say that "all older girls are more mature and better sitters" or "all middle school girls are too young and immature to baby-sit." She learned that there are different advantages and disadvantages to having high school and middle school girls baby-sit and decided that the particular middle school girls who she knew - the BSC - were the best choice. Whether or not she was right to do this and made the best decision, it was the only decision the books could have had her make if they wanted to keep writing about the Newtons. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been characters. I always liked Jenny in this book and thought it was so cute when asked how she felt at the hospital and she answered "nice and cool now" or something like that. Reminds me of how it feels to finally get over a really high fever.

This is such a great book. Classic BSC. And I agree with the person who said the fight was essential to BSC history (future?) Without it, MA's life would be very different. And Dawns too
