^Me, too! I always loved this book just for the fact that it would be so cool to find an old diary like that!

I haven't t read this book in awhile but I liked it because I like history and finding an old diary would be neat. Does Sophie die? I can't remember. I liked this part:
"Maybe Sophie stole the painting. [somebody] told us to suspect the most unlikely person." "Then we should suspect Edgar." (her baby brother)

Well, since she was 12 in the 1890's, they'd figured that she'd be either very very old or very very dead. I also liked the part where Jessi suggested that Sophie stole the painting because Mallory got very "OMGIDIOT" with her. It made me giggle. My other favorite part? When Mallory won't let the triplets break the locks and Vanessa starts speaking in rhyme again. Mallory: "If we don't open the trunk, will you start speaking in rhyme again?" Vanessa: "Probably" Mallory: "ADAM! BYRON! JORDAN!! GET UP HERE AND BRING A HAMMER!!"

^ hahaha, the weirdest thing about that, however, was that I never realised Vanessa had ever stopped speaking in rhyme!

This was one of the first BSC books I ever received. Mum had introduced me to "Little sister" and one night at my cousin's house my eldest cousin of the girls asked me if I read BSC and she gave me this book along with "Jessi Ramsey, Pet Sitter". I still have it and read it occasionally.

Haha some very funny moments in the book. Many have been mentioned but Vanessa's rhyming - "If we don't open this trunk, I will be in a very bad funk" or something like that ;D
Also Kristy in the seance pretending to be Sophie saying that the painting had never been stolen, that it was always on the wall but that Grandfather Hickman (God rest his soul) lost his glasses and thought it had disappeared. Hehe ;D

I just reread this one. It is my all-time favorite - probably because it was the first BSC book I ever read and the one that got me hooked on the series. I love any book that deals with "history" and was always fascinated by how they found the trunk and solved the mystery and wished that something could happen to me that would be as exciting. I'm still looking for an attic with some interesting old things I liked the way the subplot with Buddy and main plot were so closely tied and enjoyed seeing Stacey and Mal spend some time together. As for Vanessa's rhymes, my favorite is the one that liss quoted and all of the others cracked me up too. I actually like reading Vanessa's rhymes as they never fail to make me laugh. I had forgotten about Kristy and the seance but it is a classic!

Hmm.... i just read this book for the first time, and i don't know, but it seemed like Buddy and Charolotte were more interested in solving the mystery than the BSC was... I agree that the best part in this book was the seance. Haha.... Mal actually believed Kristy was Sophie! hehheh, Oh Mal...... It was suprising how fast Buddy learned to read! At the beginning, he could barely read the Dr. Seuess book, Green Eggs and Ham... Then a few chapters later he was magically whizzing through Sophie's diary... which was in written cursive??!? Um, yeah... that's realistic.

I thought about Buddy's improved reading ability, too. Then I started thinking about a girl I tutored and wonder if Buddy had the same thing that she did where though she truly did have trouble, she started out saying "I CAN'T do this" and got herself so worked up and convinced that she couldn't that she really couldn't. Once she got her confidence up, she improved dramatically, going from Ds to As in a few of her classes. And she had a learning disability, which I don't think Buddy did, so I can see how just a boost in confidence might have made a big impact on him, too. Also, a little motivation can do a lot. As for Mal believing Kristy was Sophie, one of the instances where she actually seems 11 ;D

Buddy is 8 isn't he? Why can't he read?! Barely getting through Dr. Seuss? There's no way that's normal for a kid his age that doesn't have any disabilities or anything. I haven't read this book in ages.

I can think of lots of reasons that a kid that old wouldn't be able to read - mostly because of the school systems just passing them along whether or not they learn or can really do the things. But I won't get started on this.... ;D Anyway, this is my favorite book and I might have to reread it, too. But then I will start wishign again that I could find a real mystery diary. Has anyone ever done this?

Was it fun to reread? I always feel embarrassed looking over old journal entries of mine, but I do like having a record of my thoughts.
