^ Kylie, you keep reminding me of books I like, which I needed tonight ;D I love Alan and Janine, too, in this one. Claudia is really the one who bothers me because she's jealous of a seven year old, it seems. Sometimes, I wish Claudia would quit selling herself short and just apply herself a little to something other than art. I know she's not a genius like Janine but still.... I felt for Rosie with her parents pushing her. Did they ever lighten up? I can't remember since I haven't read for a while. My favorite part of this book is when Stacey has to read the script with Rosie at the audition with Uncle Dandy. That guy sounds totally creepy!

^Which parts made it seem like she was jealous of Rosie? I haven't read this one in awhile.

^ Actually, I haven't either so I can't point to any right off hand ;D Maybe jealous isn't the best word but definitely insecure. I know one part that shows this is when Janine comes to help with Rosie's work and Claud comments on how the two smart ones - Janine and Rosie - are the glasses wearers and the non-glasses wearer - her - is dumb. Something to that effect. That is really the kind of thing I meant.

Yeah, if I was claud I would. I mean, she's 'only' good at art, and here is this kid who is smart and everything, and good at art too. Ha, I'm just going through and writing comments for books I've read recently! I'm up to 53, so I'll be posting alot!

^ Well . . . Claud could be good at detective work, I guess.

Claudia was good at writing when she tried and at doing the radio show. Basically, she could do anything she tried to do. She even started doing okay in school once she caught up in 7th. I think she just got so far behind because she purposely tuned out as some kind of statement like "I can't be as smart as Janine anyway so I might as well just excel at being dumb because she's the smart one, I'm the dumb one." I think that's kind of how she identified herself. This is getting off topic and belongs in the Claud school thread. Sorry ;D

I swear that to this day, almost every time I see a sign with one or more of the letters burnt out, I think of UNCLE ANDY'S TAR MACHINE. Me, too! That always made me laugh. Well, that and the drawings that Alan did at the art show. By the way, lilafowler, I love your avatar! (Edited due to a typo)

I loved Alan Gray in this book (especially the gum). And yes, Uncle Dandy was so fake and creepy. He was the worst part of the book; I almost hesitate to go back and read it again because I disliked him so much.
Did anyone else find it strange that all of Rosie's teachers (as well as Uncle Dandy) showed up at her house? I guess it facilitated the plot because the baby-sitters could be there to witness Rosie's lessons, but come on, Uncle Dandy's not going to be driving all around Stoneybrook and the greater Stamford area knocking on doors, visiting prospective "stars." And I find it hard to believe Mrs. Wilder would be able to find so many dance and music instructors capable of cultivating Rosie's substantial talents who'd be willing to give lessons at a private residence not their own.

^ Never thought of the people coming to the Wilders but you're right that so many wouldn't be willing. Maybe Uncle Dandy does have to drive all over, though, as he doesn't have a lot of clients lining up to work with him ;D I can see some instructors coming there but probably not all.

hmm I always just figured Rosie's parents pay extra or something to have the teachers come to them but I suppose it is kind of unlikely.

^ Right. When I gave riding lessons, I would charge extra to go to someone's house. That gave me a little incentive to go there but I got around that later by charging an "arena fee" when it was just the one kid I was giving lessons to. I guess that was fair because we did have to keep the arena up for her but I charged it since I couldn't charge a "bratty kid" fee ;D Hmmm, wonder if the BSC considered charging one of those ;D

my mom used to be a piano teacher and she claims that it's teachers who are just starting out or are not very good who go to the houses of their pupils. don't know the veracity of this statement though.
