Yes, I agree with you about Natalie! Every time she makes an appearance, there's some mention about her droopy socks. God forbid they give her any type of characterization. They just called her the human equivalent of droopy socks and ran with it. I don’t even understand the reference. Do they get stretched out in the wash?

^I think they just wanted her to be extremely pathetic.

I like this book, there's some great descriptions, especially at the gourmet store; but I agree, it's ridiculous Peaches quit her job (which wasn't even a physically taxing one!) when she's barely pregnant. But then, in California Diaries, Dawn thinks Carol is unhappy about her pregnancy because she's playing tennis and golf and eating ice cream; and that's literally only 3 weeks in. So maybe the ghosties/Ann figure being pregnant is like the Victorian times and the woman has to retire from life entirely for the whole nine months. 🙄

This series is old fashioned . Why does Peaches have to stay home ? Why can't she work and be pregnant at the same time ??

I remember the rubber balls hovering in air because the boys would throw them so hard. You could hear them coming at you. I'm not sure why we didn't use Nerf balls for such games!? I liked floor hockey. That was a treat to play.

Agreed, they should use nerf balls...some kids get mean in gym.

If older guys can play golf while half drunk at 10 in the morning, surely a young fit woman could handle it too. I say this as someone who has never played golf or been pregnant. Tennis however does seem exhausting.

Why would an adult want baby advice from eleven and thirteen years olds?? They were going over board thinking up stuff for the baby and some of them hardly know Peaches! I wouldn't have appreciated it if a kid gave me baby advice. She has a sister who's had two kids who's in a better position to be giving baby advice. Just because they're baby sitters doesn't make them experts!!
My least favourite book. Of course Claudia yelling at her aunt made her lose the baby. It was too much of a coincidence otherwise.

I was really looking forward to this one, and for the most part it didn't disappoint.
I enjoyed the first half more, and was surprised that Peaches kept encouraging Claudia to ignore her homework. I don't remember that. I don't really blame Claud for blowing up at her a bit tbh. For better or worse, there were a ton of food descriptions in this book. Claud's infamous pb, mayo, and banana sandwich doesn't sound great (although I've had just pb and mayo- vegan mayo but still- together before and honestly is not that bad) and Stacey's lettuce, cheese, and tomato sandwich sounds a little plain (needs pickles), but the fancy meal Claud and Peaches make sounds pretty bomb. Yeah, I've begun to note the food lol. I feel like the food descriptions actually get better as the series progresses.
Sometimes I wish not all the books had to have a subplot. I'm not sure why this one annoyed me, but it did. I guess I just didn't care about it tbh and preferred the focus on Peaches. I also wanted to see more of Claudia and Mary Anne, I like their friendship. I guess Natalie just kind of annoyed me, I hate to say. Her clinginess then random bossiness just wasn't fun to read about. Oh well.
I've had a friend who had a miscarriage and it was really tough on her. I wish more time was spent on the aftermath, although it's depressing. I don't mind the more dark and serious plots, though. It's just that I kind of wanted it to have more of an impact. This is an example of a formula getting in the way.
I feel bad for Claudia though- sheesh, this is the second time her family had a medical emergency after she got mad at them, and they were both people she's really close to. This kind of thing can really mess with you.
I like this one, Peaches is a fun character if a little frustrating. Most of Claud's later books have been pretty good.

Even now, miscarriages are super common and still never talked about. Credit to Scholastic for going there in 1999. I think the aftermath would have been way too mature for this audience at that time.
