One of the few BSC food descriptions that DIDN'T make me really hungry.
The mention of Natalie smiling widely with a mouthful of that sandwich was also disgusting. But in an awesome way.

As far as Claudia's spelling compared to Natalie's... it got me thinking... if you were a parent who hired Claud to sit for your child and she took the kid out to play or over to another clients house or whatever and left a note (cause they always leave notes, of course!!), and you came back to this horribly misspelled note, like.. Mz Springger, Me nad Nattuhley wint to Beka Ramzee's howse. Bak bye 5PM -Claudia would you ever feel comfortable hiring her again?! Anyway, I liked this book, but it was weird that Claudia was all OMG GOTTA STUDY!! and her blowup at Peaches was just mean. I loved how Mary Anne was helping her knit the blanket though, that was very sweet and its always fun to read about a BSCer hanging out with one of the girls other than their bff

^I love reading about Claudia hanging out with Mary Anne or Kristy! I thought it was really sweet because of the way they had been friends since they were babies.

I just reread this one, and I liked it a lot. I've always liked Peaches and Russ, and it was nice to see more of them. I have to agree that Peaches was a bit irresponsible, but I don't blame Claudia for not knowing how to say no to her aunt's requests. I also don't exactly blame her for flying off the handle, either, even though I think it was mean of her. It can be really frustrating to have your whole house and routine turned upside down because of guests, and sometimes things are said that shouldn't be.

I've always liked the portrayal of Claudia's relationship with varied family members--from Mimi to her parents to Janine, and now to Peaches. And, of course, Peaches has to remind Claudia of Mimi...even Peaches calls her "my Claudia."
I mentioned this book at the old site re: a distinct Claudia characteristic--this girl is quick to blame herself and find fault. She blamed herself for Mimi's stroke in Claudia and the Mean Janine. She blamed herself for Peaches having a miscarriage. She hardly sticks up for herself in Claudia and the Middle School Mystery and comes thisclose to accepting the F. I'm surprised Claudia's not more sulky in other books.
Who's the poster here that likes food mentions? Lots of them in this one: the healthy lunch Mrs. Kishi serves when Peaches and Russ first arrive of spinach salad, homemade tomato soup and melon slices; the fancy dinner Peaches and Claudia fix of angel hair pasta with cilantro pesto, pine nuts, garlic and grated Romano cheese and dessert consisting of cheesecake and a chocolate torte; and the midnight run for breadsticks with marinara sauce, deluxe pizza and soda and milkshakes.
The ending of the book, of course, sets up Claudia and the World's Cutest Baby, right? That's when Peaches has her baby, right? I've never read it...but it's a pretty safe bet that this is the one.

THe only thing I can think of about this book right now is, why was Peaches so stupid as to go out and buy all kids of baby furniture if she was only 2 months pregnant? I mean, I know she was excited, but most people don't even tell people they're pregnant at 2 months "just in case"... she friggin ordered baby furniture! I did feel bad for her, but really.

^ yeah, ITA. The first three months are always precarious. I don't know anyone who buys baby furniture at only 2 months. That's like, eight weeks!

Yeah, I have an ultrasound of my son at that age, I think they still have a tail then! LOL.
I don't remember, but why wasn't Peaches working then either? Did she quit her job because of the baby or for some other reason?

the baby. yeah, don't a lot of women have miscarriages at very early stages without even realizing they're pregnant at all?

Wow, my mom worked until the day she had me! I was a little bit early, but she definitely planned less time off than Peaches.
I don't remember what Peaches did, but isn't it also generally not a good idea jobwise to advertise your pregnancy before you have to? I recall my teachers in grade school always waiting until they were showing before saying anything.

I don't remember, but why wasn't Peaches working then either? Did she quit her job because of the baby or for some other reason? I think it was because of the baby. I thought that was really weird, considering she didn't even have any other kids to look after at the time. What was she gonna do for the next seven and a half months or whatever it was? I worked until I was 38 wks, my daughter was two weeks late and so the four weeks in between seemed endless. There's no reason at all for a woman with a healthy pregnancy to stop working at two months. I thought that was really strange, considering this is a series where parents adopt a child from Vietnam and then return to full time work almost immediately. Three months or twelve weeks is traditionally the time to announce a pregnancy, although of course, personal preference comes into it. After the first trimester (12 wks) the risk of miscarriage drops from 20% (of all known pregnancies, not ones women have lost before realising) to 1%

Yeah, when I found out I was having my son I only told my really close family and friends until I was about 3 or 4 months. I stopped working early (around 4 months), but that's because I was high risk and had been working in nursing so it was alot of physical labor. Most women work up until their 7th ot 8th month.

She said she stopped work so that she could fully experience motherhood... Still, wouldn't it be boring?
I think Peaches learnt from this time. When she was pregnant with Lynn, she didn't tell anyone until she was about 6 months along (I think. It was in Mary Anne Breaks the Rules).
And OMG, ilovethe80s, I adore the food mentioned in this! (I don't know if it was me you were referring to, but I love food mentions in everything, heh). The blueberry torte (or whatever) that Claudia and Peaches sampled in the shop sounded amazing.
