i don't think the bsc pushed having babies at all. ann loves kids, but has never had one herself. dawn specifically says in the series that while she loves kids, she doesn't want children herself. i think liking babies and wanting to have one can be two totally separate things. i hate children, aside from my own siblings, but i still want to have children.
it's funny that you feel encouraged to get married and start a family, cpennylane, because i feel like i'm being pushed into the opposite direction--like everyone wants me to wait to settle down until i'm thirty or so and have an extended, sex and the city-style second adolescence.

^ Other than some women (pregnant or not) just feel like being home. ;D Well, yeah But the BSC made it sound as if Peaches NEEDED to be home from the moment she fell pregnant. Not trying to be one of those annoying people (I've known lots of women who always knew they never wanted kids and never ended up having any) but there ARE a lot of people who end up changing their minds. Not everyone, of course. But it does happen pretty often, so I guess that's where those people are coming from. Nevertheless, they should leave you alone and respect your views on the issue. I was neither here nor there about kids in general - don't hate them, but not obsessed with them either. However, I always knew I wanted my own and I love them to death (of course!)

^ Oh, I was just joking about Peaches. I know they made it sound like she needed to stay home and not work. I was just saying that feeling like you didn't have to work would be nice (I feel swamped right now.....) ;D I agree with your thoughts on the books and babies, Greer. And I feel pushed in both directions by different people - mostly, the push is just to have a boyfriend in general. ;D

I always disliked babies until I got pregnant with our first daughter. I couldn't stand the fact that they are so messy and cry all the time. Now I can't get enough of them. But it does bug me how a lot of people don't see not wanting to have children as a valid life choice.

I think we have to remember that babies and children are just people - some are a lot more likable than others.

I didn't like Peaches in this one. Maybe I would have liked her more if I had actually read about the so-called awesome relationship between Claudia and her that was going on all those years. I mean, couldn't we have seen a random phone call or had Russ and Peaches drop by for a weekend visit or something in previous books? Or even a "Hi! Who are you?" postcard sent to them from one of Claud's vacations.
I did like the part where they were picking out the nursery furniture. The pattern Peaches picked out for the bed stuff sounded rather ugly (pastel colored, clothes wearing bears), but I think the shopping would be the best part of having a kid. ;D The sales lady definitely gave good advice for the music playing swing. Pick the song that you won't mind hearing a million times.

I loved this! I really did. I thought the interaction between Claudia and Peaches was adorable, though I do think Peaches was mean when she called her a 'sulky teenager.'
I did feel for Claudia here, she perhaps should have made more effort to say no when she had homework to do, but it is hard to say no to someone older, especially a relative. Peaches should have had more consideration - but I think she really loves Claudia and wanted to maintain the bond.
I thought the ending was so sad, but realistic too as not every pregnancy, sadly, goes to plan.

^Nods. I was the third try after two miscarriages. I have a friend who remained an only child after her mother miscarried at least once when we were a bit older.

i loved the food descriptions in this book so much! especially at the gourmet store, i think it was called 'in good taste', or something about good taste anyway. also i can totally picture Russ as this gorgeous red-head with an irish accent (even if the accent was probably lost a generation or two ago...). mmm RUSS. sorry. ill stop now. oh, more food: the way Peaches describes pizza. my god. i was totally craving teh pepperoni. nay, 'piping hot' gooey bubbly cheesy pepperoni....'

I love this book but now I wish I read the world's cutest baby one
I loved reading about all the shopping trips, the pizza outing and mary anne helping claudia knit that blanket.
But apparently at the kishi's household, going out for pizza is sinful, remember the Janine thing?

Mrs. Braddock saw Janine at pizza express in The Mystery At Claudia's House and claud and her mom were shocked because she said she was going to the library or SHS to study and they grounded her for 2 days after she confessed she went. And claudia was narrating that Janine should have said she finished studying early.

About the whole baby-thing...I'm stuck in the middle. I love kids and I def. want a family but before I give up my life to 3 or 4 kids and thier futures, I want to have a career myself.

And claudia was narrating that Janine should have said she finished studying early. That sounds a lot more like Janine got in trouble for lying about where she was going, or not telling her parents that she was also going to Pizza Express (ie, calling home with the change in plans) than that she got in trouble simply for going out for pizza.
