I always thought it was stereotypical that they have the asian guy, Rick Chow, putting together molecules at lunch. But I guess Claudia is supposed to be enough to balance every other asian stereotype they use. Why exactly were they eating prunes anyway?

I feel like the only person who actually likes Laine. I think her reaction and her actions were pretty normal for a 13 year old girl! Lots of 13 year old girls think they're the nuts (of course the BSC would NEVER be so stuck up... oh, until Stacey becomes too cool for her friends later in the series...) and act like brats. IDK I didn't mind Laine. Plus Stacey pulls this same crap later in the series!!
Edit: LOL, whatever it is that changes swear words around turned s-hit into nuts. Dibble!

^ITA about Laine! I think I mentioned it in the Laine Cummings thread. She's just a bratty 13 year old who thinks she's cooler than everyone. A lot of young teenagers go through the same phase, so I don't really fault her for it.
I thought Stacey's letter to Laine at the end of this book was immature and unnecessary. Maybe it was just the way she worded it. Signing it "Your ex-best friend" just sounded so childish and petty.

I may have considered tolerating Laine aside from the Babe/Heart thing. That was almost as lame as "dibble"
I suppose it IS pretty normal for a 13 yr old to be so insanely bratty and also for them to think their relationship is so serious and mature, but I couldn't abide that kind of crap even when I was 13 and it's even more insufferable to read about it now!!

I thought Stacey's letter to Laine at the end of this book was immature and unnecessary. I didn't really mind Laine either - I tend to like the bratty types that cause some drama in books. I agree about Stacey's letter. It just annoyed me so much - like she wouldn't even ever consider giving Laine another chance. Getting rid of Laine just felt like they were cutting out yet another - possibly the last? - friend one of the members had outside the club.

^I like the bratty characters too They make things interesting. Maybe that's why Stacey is one of my faves.

Good point! I agree with you. Stacey dropped Laine, who she'd been best friends with since she was in kindergarten, but at least she had her real friends, the BSC. I always liked how Stacey had an old friend from her hometown who she still kept in touch with, but I guess friends outside of the club never last very long in Stoneybrook.

While ITA that it wouldn't have killed Stacey (or any of the girls, really) to have a friend outside the BSC, I don't think it's entirely unrealistic for old friends to grow apart over time, particularly when they're 13 yrs old, going to different schools and not really seeing too much of each other. Besides, Stacey and Laine were on rocky territory for a while, ever since the whole diabetes/slumber party fiasco. You got the feeling things were never quite right after that, even if the girls did become friends again briefly.

I agree with macca. Stacey lives in Stoneybrook and Laine's in NY, I think that even if they hadn't had a "falling out" of sorts, they would've just drifted. I think eventually it would've been awkward for them to even be friends when Stacey visited NY (because they weren't seeing/talking to each other as much) and they would've stopped being friends regardless.

Even if you forgive someone and make up, the trust is broken and things can never be the same. Combine that with the whole "out of sight, out of mind" of different cities and schools and drifting apart is logical. Has happened to me more than once.

I'm not saying the drifting apart thing was a surprise or unlikely - because it wasn't. Esp. considering Stacey and Laine's friendship had always been about big fights and then making up. I just really thought it was too bad they let the last non-bsc friend go.

^ Yeah, ITA. Although Sunny hung around for a while and Dawn managed to keep most of her CA friends. I think instead of trying to keep the out-of-town friends, they should've allowed the BSC to have other friends in Stoneybrook. Although that would make them "traitors", wouldn't it

^ Yeah, that Claudia sure was a b*tch - associating with non-BSC members and all.
(okay, I know she broke a date with Stacey, but FFS... that didn't warrant the BSC's retaliation, especially since they were hanging out in Claudia's room and all)
