I really wonder why Laine just didn't speak up and say the idea of a week in Stoneybrook made her ill. What a waste of her vacation. Maybe her conscience got the better of her and she wanted to see what she and Stacey still had. Or maybe Mrs. Cummings forced her to at the last minute. That line was the best. I love Kristy. And also when Laine chided them for being interested in the love lives of eight year olds. Kristy was like "Yeah, whatever. We do it. Get off our case." Absolute, complete, total, and utter word. It's fine to say he calls you this, but to refer to yourself as it, like he forgot or something? So. sad. I thought Stacey's letter was incredibly dumb, signing the "ex-best friend" and including that half of the heart necklace. Kind of like saying "Yeah, don't ever write me back or even think of working it out." And I dunno, I found it really hard to believe she was ordering clowns off the home shopping channel. And Ann wrote this. Doesn't she know Stacey better than that? It did make me laugh when the book ended with Claudia saying she wanted one of those clowns too.

I also thought it was kind of realistic how as a 13-year-old, you're impressed by the idea of someone dating a *high school guy*...then when you actually GET to high school yourself, you realize that anyone who dips down into the junior high crowd is basically a loser who can't get anyone his own age...

Ah this was the first BSC book I read... Laine's boyfriend is probably the lamest guy in the whole of the BSC series. What kind of 15 year old calls themself King and lets his 13 year old girlfriend call him Heart (even worse the "King of My Heart" )... most 15 year olds would have laughed hysterically or run away very fast if his girlfriend called him that. Laine getting a job at 'Flowers and Bows' was really odd. What kind of 13 year old is hired for a job in a "trendy boutique" as she put it. I don't know why but I find it amusing when Laine said that million of people applied for and Mr Kellner chose her... what the hell is this guy up to? But a reasonable explanation is that maybe she lied about her age, because Stacey always says that Laine looks quite old for her age. Is it just me or did anyone find it weird that a bunch of 13 year olds got really really excited at their sleepover when they found out that 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was on? I just know from experience, as I am a big fan of classic movies, that when I was 13, none of my friends would watch a classic film with me if I ever brought one round... if was normally a teen comedy or romantic tear jerker that they got excited about. It would have been more realistic if the BSC had yelled out "Hey Ferris Bueller's Day Off is on!"

Hee. Sam and Stacey were the same ages as Laine and what's his name. Sam's friends gave him crap about his baby girlfriend though.

This book reminded me of why I can't stand Laine. It bugs me that she always claims to be so "cool" and mature but is really just a snob to all of the "lesser beings". I felt bad for Pete and the kids who tried to be nice to her. Even though Stacey shouldn't have encouraged Laine coming to Stoneybrook, I can understand why she did - I always wanted to show off my life at home to my horse show friends (but never did) and always thought it would be fun to have one of them come to my house. But what did they think Laine was going to do all day while Stacey was at school and what did she THINK there was going to be to do in Stoneybrook? I'm sure she thought it was beneath her before she got there, so why did she even bother coming? And Laine and her "King" were unbelievably funny - I found myself constantly rolling my eyes. Oh yeah - she's cool It was dumb that Stacey signed the letter "your ex-best" friend but compared to Laine, she was actually the more mature one (in my opinion). I can't stand Laine!

I do believe Laine was a snob in this book, however I think that behavior is typical of 13 year old girls. I can tolerate Laine for that reason, but if I was 13 again I would probably feel the same way Stacey did.

I liked it when Laine made fun of them for that -- she definitely had a point! Who were the girls so interested in? Nicky and Marilyn I think? I agree with Laine that it was weird they were sitting around talking about eight year olds like that.

I always liked Laine. I thought parts of this book betrayed her character (hey heart, it's me babe), but most of it was true to form. I thought the one where they were in New York and Laine was trouble was foreshadowing. I always thought the fault was the BSC's, not Laine's. She always seemed more mature (albeit snottily so) than the BSC because she didn't have this clique-ey friend group flanking her at all times. I think it was interesting that Stacey was torn between these two types of friendships, and eventually went with the clique-ey one.
And, yes, her letter was lame, but come on - none of you at 13 had the big "best friends" blowout, culminating with the return of your half of the cheap-o Claire's best friends heart necklace?!?

Haha, yes, you got me there! There wasn't a necklace, but oy vey was there a letter! I get a little embarrassed when thinking about it again ;D that comment actually made me appreciate stacey's letter a little more.

I like the Nicky/Carolyn/Marilyn subplot, it was cute. Nicky was really cute in this book and so were the Hobart boys, who wanted to wear suits, bring corsages, and ask dates to the party Adorable. Those boys are so cute! Anyway I thought the Nicky/twins thing was really cute and sweet... until the end when Stacey says that Nicky and Marilyn HELD HANDS. Nooooo way. They're EIGHT. My niece is in 2nd grade (like Marilyn, but she's only 7) and she claims she has a "boyfriend" but they certainly don't hold hands. He does call her sometimes, though, and they did take their picture together in a photo booth at Skateland... hmm. But holding hands? Come on. Mallory and Ben won't even hold hands. And WTF at Mary Anne like freaking out over Logan having the audacity to TALK about -gasp- DANCING. How dare he!

Those Hobart boys are adorable, wanting to dress up!
There are a lot of little red-headed boys running around Stoneybrook, the Hobarts and Rodowskys.

But holding hands? Come on. Mallory and Ben won't even hold hands. Lol! That's hilarious. But I agree with you about 2nd graders holding hands. Yikes. I held a boy's hand in 5th grade and thought I was sooo grown up. I really don't see 2nd graders doing that, though.
